For a practical starting point, match the game’s output resolution to your display, leave ray tracing off if you need steadier performance, and enable the GPU-supported upscaler if native rendering cannot hold your target frame rate. In one PC Gamer test, an RTX 3060 Ti desktop ran at 1440p with Normal quality, ray tracing off, and DLSS Quality; that is a useful example, not a universal preset. Your CPU, GPU, VRAM, and whether the system is a laptop all affect the result.
What settings should you use for smooth gameplay?
Start with a stable baseline rather than enabling every high-end feature. Choose your display resolution, select a quality preset your GPU can handle, and test the game with ray tracing off. If performance is below your target, try the supported upscaler before making larger image-quality cuts. Change one category at a time so you can tell what helped.
PC Gamer’s tested configurations offer starting points for different hardware classes. They are examples from specific systems and test conditions, not guarantees for other PCs.
| Hardware example | Tested starting settings | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Older desktop near minimum | 1080p, Normal preset, ray tracing off, FSR Balanced | PC Gamer reported heavy CPU load and weaker 1% performance on its older-CPU test system. If play feels unstable, reduce resolution or quality before enabling frame generation. |
| Entry-level gaming laptop with RTX 4050 | 1080p, Low preset, Normal ray tracing, DLSS Quality | The tested laptop’s 6 GB of VRAM constrained higher-quality settings. Asset loading also caused inconsistent frame times in that test; laptop results do not transfer automatically to other RTX 4050 systems. |
| Mainstream desktop with RTX 3060 Ti | 1440p, Normal preset, ray tracing off, DLSS Quality | PC Gamer found ray tracing usable on its test system, but with less consistent frame times. Turn it off for steadier performance. |
| High-end desktop with RX 7900 XT | 4K, High preset, High ray tracing, FSR Performance | In PC Gamer’s test, changing ray tracing from High to Normal improved average performance by around 10–15 fps. The reviewer also judged the small performance cost of maximum quality settings not worthwhile for the modest visual gain on that system. |
For comparisons, note the GPU model and whether it is a desktop or laptop, the output resolution and upscaler mode, the ray-tracing setting, and whether a reported frame rate is a baseline or includes generated frames. A single average can hide uneven frame pacing, so test in the areas where you actually notice slowdowns. PC Gamer used Leon’s introduction as a demanding sequence because it combines lights, shadows, reflections, and NPCs.

How to choose resolution, upscaling, and quality
Output resolution is the image size sent to your display. Upscaling renders the game internally at a lower resolution, then reconstructs an image at the selected output resolution. This can improve performance, though the result may look less clear than native rendering. Capcom says resolution and screen mode can be changed in the in-game options, and the resolutions available depend on the graphics card. See Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem FAQ.
Use the highest output resolution you can sustain comfortably, then compare available upscaling modes for clarity and frame pacing. The official Epic Games Store listing describes its performance targets as upscaled rather than native-resolution targets: minimum aims at 1080p/30 fps from 640p native, while recommended aims at 1080p/60 fps from 720p native. The listing warns that frame rate can fall under high processing load; these are publisher targets, not guaranteed results in every scene or system. See the official PC system requirements listing.

If performance is poor, lower demanding quality settings or output resolution before assuming a higher-end graphics feature is required. Where available, try the upscaler supported by your GPU and compare the image at your normal viewing distance.
Should you enable ray tracing or path tracing?
Ray tracing is optional. PC Gamer observed improved shadowing and some reflections with ray tracing, but its performance cost varied by GPU and mode. If ray tracing makes frame times less consistent, switch it off or reduce its mode. On PC Gamer’s RX 7900 XT test, moving from High to Normal ray tracing raised average performance by around 10–15 fps.

Path tracing is a much heavier option and is best treated as a feature for systems with substantial performance headroom, not a default setting for smooth play. In PC Gamer’s RTX 5090 test at 4K Max with DLSS Performance, High ray tracing reached 157 fps while path tracing reached 77 fps. Those are results from that review’s system and conditions, not expected rates for all RTX 5090 PCs.
NVIDIA advertises more than 280 fps on RTX 5090 and almost 200 fps on RTX 5080 for a 4K highest-settings path-traced configuration using DLSS Ray Reconstruction and 4X DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. These are NVIDIA’s vendor claims, not independent benchmark results. See NVIDIA’s feature announcement.

Does frame generation help?
Frame generation can make motion appear smoother by inserting additional displayed frames, but it does not provide the same input response as a stronger underlying frame rate. PC Gamer cautions that it can increase input latency and recommends establishing decent baseline performance first. In its testing, FSR frame generation added more latency than the reviewer preferred on the minimum-spec system; on the tested RTX 4050 laptop, it used too much of the system’s constrained VRAM and made frame times less consistent.
NVIDIA says DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is available on GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs, while DLSS Frame Generation is available on RTX 40-series GPUs. Availability of these features depends on supported hardware and the game’s options. Treat generated-frame figures as distinct from baseline rendering performance.

Will the listed requirements work on a laptop or handheld?
Not necessarily. Capcom’s FAQ, updated July 22, 2026, warns that mobile GPUs can perform substantially worse than regular GPUs even when their names appear to meet the listed minimum or recommended model. It also says normal operation is not guaranteed with onboard graphics or devices that share VRAM with main memory. Do not infer laptop performance from a desktop GPU with a similar name; the RTX 4050 laptop settings above describe one tested configuration only.
The official PC listing specifies Windows 11 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, DirectX 12, and an SSD for both minimum and recommended configurations. Its minimum GPU is a GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8 GB; recommended is a GeForce RTX 2060 Super 8 GB or Radeon RX 6600 8 GB. Minimum CPU is an Intel Core i5-8500 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500; recommended is an Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 5500. The listing requires an SSD but does not state a capacity or speed tier. Check the official PC system requirements listing for the publisher’s configuration details.
A quick troubleshooting order for low or uneven FPS
- Confirm the basics: check that the PC meets the listed requirements and that the game is installed on an SSD.
- Set a manageable baseline: choose your display resolution, use a moderate or lower quality preset, and turn ray tracing off.
- Try upscaling: select a supported mode and check both image clarity and frame pacing at your chosen output resolution.
- Adjust one setting group at a time: lower quality or resolution if needed, then replay a demanding section where slowdowns occur.
- Only then test frame generation: compare responsiveness as well as displayed smoothness; disable it if latency or frame consistency worsens.
- Reserve path tracing for ample headroom: if performance is the priority, leave it off.
These steps are a practical way to isolate settings changes, not a promise that a particular configuration will reach a specific frame rate. The storefront itself warns that performance can drop under high processing load.
