For most new players, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It is the best all-round remake: modern third-person controls, sustained horror, exploration, puzzles, combat and multiple character routes. Choose Resident Evil (2002) for the most traditional survival-horror experience, Resident Evil 3 (2020) for a shorter, faster Nemesis campaign, or Resident Evil 4 (2023) for the broadest action game and deepest combat toolkit.
Quick verdict
| What you want | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional survival horror | Resident Evil (2002) | A confined mansion, fixed-camera composition, puzzles, route planning and strict resource pressure. |
| The best first modern Resident Evil | Resident Evil 2 (2019) | The strongest balance of exploration, stalking horror, combat, puzzles and story. |
| A short, fast Nemesis story | Resident Evil 3 (2020) | Compressed structure, frequent set pieces and an action-forward pace. |
| Action combat and a larger adventure | Resident Evil 4 (2023) | Flexible weapons, stealth, crowd control and a campaign built around escalating encounters. |
Capcom’s 2024 getting-started guide gives the clearest answer for newcomers: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019).” That recommendation is aimed at accessibility and balance, not at declaring the other remakes inferior. Each one recreates a different idea of what Resident Evil should feel like.
What counts as a Resident Evil remake here?
This comparison covers four major reinterpretations. Resident Evil (2002) re-imagines the 1996 PlayStation game, retaining its mansion-centered identity while rebuilding graphics, sound, encounters and gameplay presentation. Resident Evil 2 (2019), Resident Evil 3 (2020) and Resident Evil 4 (2023) are the later modern remakes made with contemporary technology and grouped by Capcom as part of its RE Engine remake line.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Remake” does not mean that every game follows its original scene by scene. The 2002 release is structurally close to the first game but substantially reworked in atmosphere and encounters. The 2019 second game changes how spaces, scenarios and story beats are presented. The 2020 third game compresses more of its source material into a faster campaign. The 2023 fourth game modernizes an already action-oriented design rather than turning it into a pure horror game.

How the four remakes differ
| Game | Horror and pacing | Combat model | Structure and replay | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil (2002) | Slow, oppressive and deliberately disorienting. | Preparation, positioning and careful ammunition use. | Learn the mansion, revisit routes and improve runs through route mastery and difficulty choices. | Older control feel and presentation conventions. |
| Resident Evil 2 (2019) | Sustained tension built around exploration and pursuit. | Measured shooting, scarce resources and pressure from persistent threats. | Character campaigns and scenario variations give it the broadest all-round replay appeal. | Less traditionally fixed-camera than the 2002 game. |
| Resident Evil 3 (2020) | Fast, set-piece-driven momentum. | More action pressure, with Nemesis encounters driving urgency. | Compact campaign designed to keep moving. | Less exploration and breadth than RE2 or the 2002 remake. |
| Resident Evil 4 (2023) | Action escalation with horror elements rather than sustained survival-horror restraint. | The deepest toolkit: weapon choice, stealth, crowd control and encounter management. | A larger adventure whose combat systems and additional content support repeat play. | Least focused on pure survival-horror atmosphere. |
Resident Evil (2002): the traditionalist’s choice
What it does best
The 2002 remake is the pick for players who want Resident Evil as a survival-horror puzzle box. The mansion is a confined environment that becomes more understandable over repeated visits. Progress depends on remembering doors, shortcuts, item locations and the safest route through hostile rooms. Fixed-camera composition controls what you can see, so tension often comes from uncertainty rather than from a large enemy count.
Its deliberate movement and limited resources make every decision consequential. Fighting is not always the best answer; conserving ammunition, carrying the right key item and deciding when to return to a storage point are part of the design. Puzzles are not interruptions between action scenes. They are the reason to learn the building.
How close is it to the original?
Capcom describes it as a re-imagined version of the 1996 original with substantial graphics, sound and gameplay refinements. That description matters: the remake preserves the mansion-centered structure and classic survival-horror texture while changing presentation and encounters enough to stand on its own.
Who should choose it?
- Players who enjoy puzzles, backtracking and route optimization.
- Fans of fixed-camera composition and a slower, more oppressive rhythm.
- Anyone who wants to understand the design foundation behind later Resident Evil games.
It is not the easiest first game for someone accustomed to modern third-person controls. If you want immediate camera freedom and a more contemporary interface, RE2 is a smoother entry.

Resident Evil 2 (2019): the best all-round starting point
Why it is the default recommendation
RE2 combines the qualities most readers want from a modern remake without leaning too far toward either extreme. It has exploration and puzzles, but its spaces are readable. It creates sustained horror through pursuit and uncertainty, yet its third-person controls make aiming and movement familiar to current players. It offers combat, but ammunition and healing still require judgment.
Capcom reported that the original 1998 game had reached 4.96 million cumulative sales in its 2019 release report. The remake was built completely from the ground up for current-generation platforms, which is why its lighting, character animation, sound design and environmental detail feel like a reconstruction rather than a visual upgrade.
Campaign design and replay value
The game’s character campaigns and scenario variations give it more breadth than the 2020 remake. Different protagonists alter the rhythm and perspective of the same crisis, while alternate routes encourage another run without requiring a completely different game. That combination makes RE2 the safest single purchase when you do not yet know which side of the series you prefer.
Best fit
- New players who want Capcom’s recommended starting point.
- Players who want horror, puzzles and action in roughly equal measure.
- Anyone choosing one remake to represent modern Resident Evil.
Resident Evil 3 (2020): the concise Nemesis campaign
Its defining strength is momentum
RE3 follows Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira through a campaign built to keep moving. Nemesis supplies the central pressure, and set pieces arrive more frequently than they do in the mansion or police-station exploration of the other horror-focused remakes. The result is a brisk, action-oriented experience that asks you to react rather than spend as long learning one interconnected space.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

The scope trade-off
The same compression that gives RE3 energy limits its breadth. It offers less extended exploration, fewer opportunities to become familiar with a large environment and less side-content texture than RE2 or the 2002 remake. Players who value momentum will see that as focus; players expecting a broad recreation of the 1999 city structure may see it as a shortfall.
Comparative critical coverage has generally treated RE3 as more mixed than the exceptional RE2 remake and the strong RE4 remake. That is a judgment about scope and execution, not a sales statistic. Buy it when a shorter campaign is a feature rather than a drawback.
Who should choose it?
- Players who specifically want Jill, Carlos and Nemesis.
- Those who prefer set pieces and forward motion to extended backtracking.
- Fans looking for a faster follow-up after RE2.
Resident Evil 4 (2023): the action-focused remake
What changes from the horror formula
RE4 preserves the 2005 game’s rural rescue structure while rebuilding combat, stealth, enemy encounters and character relationships for modern play. It is still unsettling, but its primary satisfaction comes from handling threats efficiently. Weapon selection, positioning, crowd control and the decision to fight or evade matter more than conserving every round for a future corridor.
That makes it the least purely survival-horror-focused game in this comparison and the most combat-flexible. The campaign is broader and more adventurous, with escalating encounters designed around the player’s growing toolkit.

Edition considerations
Capcom France documented a Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition for the Switch 2 release. If you are buying on that platform, compare the Gold and standard listings and confirm which downloadable content is included in your region. Edition names and storefront contents can differ by market, so do not assume that a bundle shown in one country is identical elsewhere.
Who should choose it?
- Players who prioritize combat variety and action pacing.
- Anyone who wants a larger adventure after a more confined horror game.
- Returning fans who liked the original’s action direction but want modern stealth and encounter systems.
Choosing by your priorities
If horror atmosphere matters most
Choose RE1 for slow, mansion-based oppression and the strongest traditional survival-horror constraints. Choose RE2 if you want that tension expressed through modern third-person pursuit and exploration.
If combat matters most
Choose RE4. It has the broadest combat toolkit and the greatest emphasis on weapon choice, stealth and crowd management. RE3 is the alternative when you want action pressure in a shorter, more linear-feeling campaign.
Recommended Free Tools
If puzzles and exploration matter most
RE1 is the purest puzzle-and-route experience. RE2 is the better compromise if you want puzzles without giving up modern controls or a wider variety of combat encounters.

If replay value matters most
RE2’s character routes and scenario variations make it the strongest all-round replay choice. RE1 rewards route mastery and difficulty management. RE4’s combat systems and optional content support repeated runs. RE3 is the most concise, so its replay appeal depends on whether you enjoy replaying a tightly paced campaign.
Platform and edition details
Capcom has documented enhanced current-generation versions of the RE Engine remakes with features such as ray tracing, high frame rate options and 3D audio where the hardware and edition support them. Availability is platform-specific: check the exact storefront listing for the console or PC version you own rather than assuming every technical feature appears everywhere.
For Switch 2, Capcom France announced digital releases of RE2 Deluxe Edition, RE3 and RE4 Gold Edition for October 16, 2026. Boxed editions are scheduled for January 29, 2027. Those dates describe the announced French release schedule; other regions, storefronts and physical distributors may use different dates or edition names.

One game
Buy RE2 (2019). It is the broadest recommendation and Capcom’s stated starting point for new players.
Two games
Buy RE2 plus RE4 for the widest contrast: first experience exploration-led survival horror, then move into action-focused combat and a larger adventure.
A classic-to-modern path
- Start with RE1 (2002) if you want the original survival-horror design language.
- Continue with RE2 (2019) to see that formula rebuilt around modern third-person controls.
- Play RE3 (2020) when you want a shorter Nemesis-driven change of pace.
- Finish with RE4 (2023) for the series’ most combat-heavy remake.
A momentum-first path
- Start with RE2 to establish the modern controls and horror systems.
- Play RE3 for a brisk, set-piece-driven campaign.
- Move to RE4 when you want more weapons, larger encounters and action variety.
Why these games remain important
Capcom’s integrated report said the Resident Evil franchise had surpassed 170 million units worldwide by 2025. That scale helps explain why the remakes are not interchangeable refreshes. They are competing interpretations of the series’ history: the 2002 game protects the mansion-and-puzzle identity, RE2 modernizes stalking horror, RE3 emphasizes urgency and RE4 demonstrates how far the formula can move toward action while retaining its characters and atmosphere.
The right choice therefore depends less on release order than on the experience you want to have. Newcomers should follow Capcom’s RE2 recommendation. Traditionalists should pick RE1. Players who specifically want Nemesis and a faster campaign should accept RE3’s reduced scope. Action fans should choose RE4, checking the edition and regional contents before buying.
