If you’ve forgotten the administrator password, first identify whether you sign in with a Microsoft account or a local Windows account. Recover that account through its supported process before resetting Windows: a reset reinstalls the operating system, not the forgotten password, and can remove apps, settings, or personal files. If the PC is encrypted, you may also need its BitLocker recovery key.

First, distinguish the password, PIN, and Windows reset

These are different things. Your account password proves access to a Microsoft or local account. A Windows Hello PIN is a separate sign-in method for that device. Reset this PC reinstalls Windows; it does not reveal or recover the existing account password.

The right route depends on the account type and which recovery methods were configured. Microsoft’s User Account Access in Windows guidance explains the distinction between Microsoft and local accounts. UI wording and available options can vary by Windows version, device configuration, and management by a workplace or school.

Choose the recovery path for your account

Sign-in type Try first What you need
Microsoft account Use “I forgot my password” at sign-in or Microsoft’s online password-reset process. Access to an available verification method, such as the security email address or phone number associated with the account.
Local account Choose “Reset password” at sign-in and answer the security questions; use a previously created password reset disk if you have one. Configured security questions or a reset disk made for that local account before the lockout.
Local account with another administrator available Sign in to that other administrator account and reset the locked local account’s password. Access to the other administrator account on the same PC.

Microsoft account: verify your identity and reset the password

  1. At the Windows sign-in screen, select I forgot my password if it appears, or use the available web sign-in route. You can also begin from Microsoft’s forgotten Microsoft account password page in another browser.
  2. Complete the identity check using one of the verification methods offered for your account, then follow the prompts to set a new password.
  3. If none of the offered email or phone methods are accessible, use Microsoft’s sign-in helper and account-recovery guidance. Microsoft support agents cannot send a password-reset link or access and change account details on your behalf.

Local account: use a configured recovery option

  1. On the sign-in screen, select the password entry option, choose Reset password, and answer the security questions you set up for the account.
  2. If you made a password reset disk for that account before forgetting the password, choose Use a password reset disk and follow the prompts.
  3. If another administrator account on the PC is accessible, sign in to it and use Windows’ local-account password reset procedure.

These options target the account itself and are preferable to reinstalling Windows when your goal is to regain access. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing or resetting a local account password.

A password reset disk is something to prepare in advance

A password reset disk is a USB flash drive set up while you are signed in to a local account. It is not a generic USB recovery trick, cannot be created retroactively to unlock an account whose password is already forgotten, and is not for Microsoft accounts. Microsoft explains how to create a password reset disk for a local account.

If you forgot your Windows PIN

A PIN is not interchangeable with your account password. Microsoft’s PIN guidance says I forgot my PIN at sign-in is available for Microsoft accounts, not local accounts.

  • Microsoft account: If the option appears at sign-in, use it and complete the identity checks.
  • Local account: If you can sign in with your password, reset the PIN in Settings. If you cannot remember the password either, recover that password through the local-account route first.

When a Windows reset is the next option

If account recovery does not work and you decide to rebuild Windows, use Reset this PC from Settings when you can sign in, or start from Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). Microsoft describes reset as a disruptive recovery choice, so back up important data first whenever you can. Microsoft Support’s Reset your PC page says: “Back up important files before you begin.”

Reset option Personal files Apps and settings When it may fit
Keep my files Keeps personal files. Removes apps and settings. You need to reinstall Windows and want to retain personal files, while understanding that this is not a password-recovery method.
Remove everything Removes personal files. Removes apps and settings. You intend to start over or prepare the PC for transfer.

The optional clean-data setting for Remove everything is intended to make removed files harder for others to recover when selling, donating, or recycling a PC. Microsoft says it is not an industry- or government-grade erasure standard.

Cloud download or local reinstall

  • Cloud download obtains a fresh copy of Windows. You need a working internet connection.
  • Local reinstall uses files already on the PC and may not include the latest updates.

Neither choice should be treated as a way to recover the forgotten password. A reset can have different results depending on device configuration, and you should not assume every file will survive.

Check encryption and locate the recovery key before proceeding

If BitLocker or Device Encryption asks for a recovery key, the key may be essential to accessing encrypted data. Microsoft describes the BitLocker recovery key as a 48-digit number. Check the Microsoft account associated with the device, a work or school account or IT department, a printed copy, and any USB drive where the key may have been saved. Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery-key guidance says Microsoft cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost key.

Device Encryption can turn on automatically when a device is set up with a Microsoft or work/school account, and the recovery key is associated with that account. It is available on more devices than BitLocker Drive Encryption, including some Windows Home PCs. Do not assume encryption is absent just because the PC runs Windows Home; see Microsoft’s Device Encryption in Windows guidance.

If you cannot find the key and cannot undo the change that triggered recovery, Microsoft says you may need to reset the device using Windows recovery options. That may not restore access to encrypted personal data.

Recovery media and work- or school-managed PCs

Windows recovery options can include Windows RE, a recovery drive, generic Windows installation media, or manufacturer recovery media. Manufacturer recovery images typically include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft installation media may omit. Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows page describes these routes.

If the PC belongs to an employer or school, contact its IT department before resetting or reinstalling Windows. The organization may control the BitLocker recovery key, have its own recovery tools, or manage how the device can be restored.

Windows version and support status

Microsoft’s cited instructions generally apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the exact screens and options can differ. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you are resetting a Windows 10 PC, factor that support status into your decision about the device’s next configuration.
