Short answer: Samsung has publicly targeted 1,000-layer V-NAND by 2030, but the available evidence does not confirm that a 1,000-layer chip is already working or in production. Samsung’s verified 2024 announcements cover mass production of ninth-generation TLC and QLC V-NAND, not a 1,000-layer product.
What Samsung has actually announced
Samsung’s clearest public statement comes from its October 5, 2022 Tech Day coverage. The company wrote: “Drawing from its industry-leading expertise, Samsung has set its sights on developing 1,000-layer stack technology by 2030.” That is a development target and time horizon, not a declaration that a finished 1,000-layer device existed.
The distinction matters because a roadmap can describe where engineering work is intended to go without establishing that the design has passed qualification, entered mass production, or reached products sold to customers.
The 2024 TLC milestone
On April 23, 2024, Samsung Semiconductor announced that it had begun mass production of 1Tb TLC ninth-generation V-NAND. The announcement described a double-stack structure and channel-hole etching. Those details demonstrate continued progress in vertical NAND scaling, but the release did not identify the memory as a 1,000-layer device.

The 2024 QLC milestone
On September 12, 2024, Samsung announced mass production of 1Tb QLC ninth-generation V-NAND. Samsung said the QLC technology would support branded consumer products, mobile storage, PCs and server SSDs. This was a ninth-generation production announcement, not confirmation of a 1,000-layer stack or a petabyte-capacity SSD.
| Claim or milestone | What the public source establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000-layer V-NAND by 2030 | Samsung’s stated development target at Tech Day 2022 | That a completed 1,000-layer chip exists or is shipping |
| 1Tb TLC ninth-generation V-NAND | Mass production began April 23, 2024 | That the product uses 1,000 layers |
| 1Tb QLC ninth-generation V-NAND | Mass production announced September 12, 2024 | That Samsung has a 1,000-layer product or a petabyte SSD |
Why a 1,000-layer stack is technically difficult
V-NAND increases density by stacking memory cells vertically rather than relying only on larger two-dimensional arrays. As the stack grows, Samsung’s public technical material identifies several engineering problems.

- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
- Stack height: Taller structures must be formed, etched and controlled across the wafer without unacceptable variation.
- Mold leaning: The stacked layers and the holes cut through them can become harder to keep straight as height increases.
- Channel-hole etching: The channel holes that define the vertical memory path require process control through a much deeper structure.
- Cell-current decline: Electrical behavior can degrade as cells are placed farther through the stack, affecting sensing margins and reliability.
- Cell interference: Closely packed vertical cells can influence one another, complicating programming, reading and error management.
Samsung’s V-NAND explainer presents higher layer counts as an ongoing engineering path. It provides context for why a 1,000-layer goal is challenging, but it does not disclose a verified architecture for a future 1,000-layer product.
How strong is the “already working” report?
The report titled “Samsung Might Already Be Working on 1,000-Layer NAND” uses more immediate language than Samsung’s public roadmap. The accessible public evidence confirms the 2030 target and the 2024 ninth-generation production milestones, but it does not verify the report’s specific description of Samsung’s then-current internal research.

The original ExtremeTech article, dated May 21, 2024 in search records, was not accessible in the available material, so its attribution and supporting sourcing cannot be independently checked here. The “already working” claim should therefore remain attributed to that report rather than presented as an established Samsung announcement.
What about a one-petabyte SSD?
Search-result text for the report says Samsung wants to be the first memory maker to reach the 1-petabyte barrier in a single SSD. That is a description of the report’s claim, not a verified Samsung product announcement, specification or retail capacity.

A NAND layer count and an SSD’s total capacity are related but not interchangeable. Capacity also depends on the number of dies, bits stored per cell, package configuration, controller design, overprovisioning and the way drives are assembled. Nothing in the cited 2024 production announcements establishes a purchasable one-petabyte Samsung SSD.

Samsung’s public target points to development by 2030, not a retail launch date. The cited sources do not provide a qualification schedule, product name, manufacturing node, partner announcement or consumer availability window for 1,000-layer NAND. Any claim that it will appear in a particular SSD model or year before Samsung publishes those details would be speculation.

What readers can conclude now
- Samsung publicly set a 1,000-layer V-NAND development target for 2030 in 2022.
- Samsung began mass production of 1Tb TLC ninth-generation V-NAND in April 2024 and announced 1Tb QLC ninth-generation production in September 2024.
- Neither 2024 announcement says that the NAND has 1,000 layers.
- The report’s “already working” framing and its one-petabyte SSD ambition are not independently verified by the available Samsung announcements.
- No current retail product can be identified from these sources as a 1,000-layer NAND device.
Samsung is clearly advancing vertical NAND, but the defensible description today is “a public 2030 target with ongoing ninth-generation production,” not “a confirmed 1,000-layer product already in the market.”
