Renesas Electronics and GlobalFoundries (GF) announced an expanded, multi-billion-dollar manufacturing partnership to broaden Renesas’ access to GF process technologies and manufacturing sites. The companies say the collaboration is intended to support more resilient semiconductor supply for applications including smart and electrified vehicles, automated factories, and industrial connectivity.
What did Renesas and GlobalFoundries announce?
The companies announced an expanded strategic collaboration on February 16, 2026, in GF’s U.S. announcement and February 17, 2026, in Renesas’ Japan announcement. They describe it as a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing partnership that builds on an existing relationship. The releases do not provide a detailed contract value.
The agreement gives Renesas broader access to GF manufacturing technologies. Initial tape-outs under the expanded collaboration were targeted to begin in mid-2026; that is a design milestone, not a stated date for volume production. The announcements do not disclose wafer volumes, pricing, customer allocations, or confirmed qualification results.
Which technologies and applications are included?
Renesas is to gain access to three broad categories of GF technology:
#1 Best Overall
- FDX (FD-SOI): a fully depleted silicon-on-insulator process technology.
- BCD: a process family combining bipolar, CMOS, and DMOS capabilities, relevant to power-oriented devices.
- Feature-rich CMOS with non-volatile-memory features: technology for systems-on-chip, power devices, and microcontrollers.
The companies connect the expanded technology access to demand for chips used in smart and electrified vehicles and automated factories. Examples named in the announcement include radar for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), electric-vehicle battery management, and secure industrial-IoT connectivity.
Renesas also points to growing needs in electrification, connectivity, and AI-related compute. The announcement establishes these as demand areas motivating the partnership; it does not identify a specific AI chip, customer design, or product launch resulting from the deal.

Where will manufacturing take place?
The partnership starts with manufacturing in the United States and is intended to extend across GF facilities in Germany and Singapore, as well as GF’s manufacturing partnership in China. Renesas and GF are also considering porting selected GF process technologies into Renesas’ own fabs in Japan. That Japan work is described as under consideration, not as a confirmed production arrangement.
Using several manufacturing locations can give Renesas more options for sourcing chips, but the public announcement does not specify which products will be made at each site or how production will be allocated. It also does not promise that every technology or design will be available at every location.

- AUTHENTIC SILICON SAMPLE: Real silicon wafer die sample featuring genuine wafer surface patterns, designed for semiconductor learning, research demonstration, and technology display purposes.
- NON-FUNCTIONAL SPECIMEN: This silicon sample is a display and educational specimen only. It is not an electronic component and does not perform computing or electrical functions.
- SEMICONDUCTOR EDUCATION USE: Suitable for classrooms, laboratories, engineering courses, STEM activities, and demonstrations of wafer structures and semiconductor manufacturing concepts.
- TECHNOLOGY DISPLAY ITEM: Ideal for exhibitions, science displays, collections, and demonstrations related to microelectronics and semiconductor technology.
- INDIVIDUAL PACKAGING: Each sample is separately packaged to help maintain surface cleanliness and reduce scratches during storage and handling.
How could the agreement strengthen the supply chain?
The practical aim is to give Renesas additional manufacturing and process-technology options as chip demand grows in automotive and industrial markets. Broader access across GF technologies and locations may help the companies build flexibility into future designs and sourcing plans. The releases frame this as supply assurance and resilience, but do not quantify how much capacity will be added or how the arrangement changes delivery risk for any particular customer.
GF and Renesas also place the U.S. manufacturing component in the context of U.S. priorities to strengthen domestic semiconductor production for economic and national security. The wider manufacturing footprint, however, is international: the announced scope includes GF sites or manufacturing partnerships in the United States, Germany, Singapore, and China, with possible technology porting to Japan still under consideration.
What is not yet known?
The announcement sets out strategic scope and a target for initial tape-outs, but leaves key commercial and production details undisclosed:
- The agreement’s detailed dollar value, beyond the description “multi-billion-dollar.”
- Wafer volumes, recurring capacity commitments, pricing, and customer allocations.
- Which specific Renesas products will use each GF technology or manufacturing site.
- When designs will enter production or reach customers.
- Qualification results and the status of any proposed technology porting to Renesas fabs in Japan.
Can consumers buy a product from this partnership?
No specific consumer product is named. This is a business-to-business manufacturing agreement, and the public announcements do not identify a Renesas or GF product for consumers to purchase as a direct result of the partnership.
