Reg-suit and Applitools solve visual regression testing in different ways. Reg-suit is a CLI for comparing screenshot files that your team captures and for publishing difference reports through plugins. Applitools is a managed visual-testing service built around UI checkpoints, stored baselines, and review. Choose based on who should own capture, storage, comparison review, and browser/device coverage—not on a blanket claim that one is better.

How the two screenshot-comparison workflows differ

Visual regression testing checks whether a screen has changed unexpectedly. Applitools describes visual testing as a way to ensure previously correct screens have not changed unexpectedly in its Overview of Visual UI Testing. Both products support baseline comparison, but they place more of the workflow in different hands.

Reg-suit: bring screenshots, configure the workflow

Reg-suit is a command-line interface for visual regression testing. It compares supplied images against expected snapshots and can produce an HTML difference report. Your test or capture setup generates the screenshots; reg-suit handles comparison, while plugins support related workflow needs such as snapshot storage and publishing.

The project documentation describes using publisher plugins with external storage such as S3 or Google Cloud Storage. Its examples cover local and CI workflows. GitHub pull-request comments are also documented through an integration. That flexibility leaves your team responsible for assembling and maintaining capture, configuration, storage, and CI steps.

Applitools: use a managed baseline-and-review process

Applitools describes a service-based workflow: capture UI checkpoints, compare them with stored baselines, then review differences. When a change is intentional, accepting it updates the baseline for future comparisons.

Applitools’ materials describe comparison controls for match sensitivity and handling dynamic content, along with integrations for Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, and Appium. The vendor also describes Ultrafast Grid and Native Mobile Grid for parallel browser and device runs. These are vendor-described capabilities; verify that the required SDKs, grids, limits, and review features are available for your current plan.

Which one should you evaluate first?

Start with reg-suit if your team wants workflow control

  • You already have a screenshot-capture step or can add one to your tests.
  • You want a CLI-centered process and are comfortable configuring storage, CI, and report publishing.
  • You need plugin-level flexibility and can verify that the particular plugins you rely on remain maintained and compatible with your environment.

Evaluate Applitools if you need managed review and coverage

  • You want a service-based baseline and change-review workflow.
  • Its documented comparison controls and dynamic-content handling match the kinds of changes that create noise in your UI.
  • You need browser/device execution through its grids, subject to confirming current availability, plan limits, and SDK compatibility.

Neither choice removes the need to decide which changes should count as regressions. The useful distinction is operational: with reg-suit, your team assembles more of the capture and storage workflow; with Applitools, you evaluate a managed baseline and review process, while confirming the exact plan capabilities you need.

How to compare them in a proof of concept

Run both against the same application states before committing to a workflow. This is an evaluation method, not a claim that either product has been benchmarked here.

  1. Choose representative routes and states. Include typical pages, high-change pages, and states affected by dynamic content. Fix the same test data and interaction sequence for both runs.
  2. Match viewport and browser conditions. Use equivalent viewport sizes and browser settings wherever each workflow permits. If browser/device matrices differ, record the mismatch rather than treating the outputs as directly equivalent.
  3. Include known intentional changes. Use a small, controlled UI change that should be accepted, alongside an unintended-looking change that should be reviewed. Observe how each workflow presents and handles both.
  4. Record review effort and noise. Note how many differences require human review, how dynamic regions affect the results, and how easy it is to accept intended updates.
  5. Measure operational fit. Track setup work, CI runtime in your own environment, storage and configuration responsibilities, plugin or SDK maintenance, and the effort needed to reproduce a failed run.
  6. Check commercial and retention terms directly. For Applitools, verify current pricing, usage limits, grid access, retention, and export options for your expected test volume. For reg-suit, estimate your own CI, storage, and maintenance costs.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for the baseline comparison workflow in either reg-suit or Applitools. It is an alternative to try first when the immediate need is to capture clean website screenshots for a workflow you control: it can remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed; and AI agents can take screenshots through its MCP server. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

For a capture step, send one GET request with your target URL and API key. This cURL example saves a WebP response; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

Questions to settle before choosing

  • Who will own screenshot capture, storage, and CI configuration?
  • How much review noise can the team tolerate, and how will it handle dynamic regions?
  • Which frameworks, browsers, devices, and SDK versions must be supported?
  • What are the current price, usage, retention, and export terms for the exact service plan under consideration?
