For long-term support, compare the exact phone model’s remaining software-update window—not whether the listing says “new” or “refurbished.” Refurbished can be the better value if the phone still has years of eligible updates and comes with a clearly documented battery, warranty, and return policy. New is often the safer choice when it provides substantially more support time and the refurbished phone’s condition or protections are uncertain.
What “long-term support” means when choosing a phone
Support time is determined by the model and its manufacturer’s eligibility terms. Buying a device refurbished later does not restart its update clock or add years to the manufacturer’s commitment. Check the current policy for the exact model, including operating-system upgrades and security patches; eligibility and timing can differ across devices and regions.
For example, Google says Android devices can receive up to seven years of OS upgrades, but that is not a blanket promise for every Android phone. Samsung’s 2022 announcement applied to select models and noted that availability and timing vary. Treat those statements as prompts to verify a specific device, not as support guarantees for an entire brand.
Compare refurbished and new phones on the factors that affect useful life

When a refurbished phone makes sense
A refurbished phone can be a sound long-term choice when it is recent enough to have meaningful support remaining and the seller clearly documents its condition and protections. Do not assume every refurbished device has a fresh battery or the same inspection standard. “Refurbished” and cosmetic grade labels are not universal specifications.

Some manufacturer programs make specific commitments. Apple says its Certified Refurbished iOS devices receive a new battery and outer shell, genuine parts as needed, testing, and a one-year limited warranty. Samsung’s U.S. Certified Re-Newed page describes genuine parts, a certified new battery, inspection, and a one-year limited warranty. Those terms apply to those programs, not to all used or refurbished listings; verify the current terms and regional availability before purchasing.
Google’s December 2025 page says refurbished Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series devices are offered in the U.S. with genuine Google parts and a one-year warranty. That does not establish the terms for every third-party listing. For any seller, read the specific listing and warranty rather than relying on the category label.

When buying new is the better long-term choice
Choose new when the exact new model offers a materially longer remaining support period, or when a refurbished alternative has uncertain battery health, unclear repairs, weak returns, or a short warranty. A new phone is not automatically supported longer than every refurbished phone: compare their model-specific eligibility dates and update coverage directly.
Work out total cost rather than comparing sticker prices alone. Add a plausible battery or repair expense to the refurbished price, then consider what the warranty and return window are worth to you. If that total approaches the price of a new phone with a longer remaining support window, new may be the more predictable purchase. There is no established universal lifespan for refurbished phones.

Battery, repairs, and parts can determine how long you keep it
A phone can remain eligible for updates but become inconvenient or costly to use if its battery or another component fails. Apple warns that unverified batteries can cause performance or safety issues and says genuine replacement parts matter for proper battery reporting. It documents battery-service options. Google says it continues to invest in genuine Pixel spare parts through iFixit. Match any battery or parts option to the exact model, and compare repair cost with the phone’s remaining software support before deciding to repair or replace it.
Use this buying checklist before checkout
- Identify the exact model and region. Confirm the model number, storage, unlocked status, carrier compatibility, and SIM or eSIM requirements.
- Confirm remaining updates. Use the manufacturer’s current support information for that model. Check both operating-system upgrades and security updates rather than assuming one implies the other.
- Get battery terms in writing. Look for a new or replaced battery, a stated capacity floor, a diagnostic result, or the cost of replacement. If none is stated, do not assume the battery is new.
- Read the condition and inspection terms. Establish what the grade covers, whether core functions were checked, and what is disclosed about parts or damage.
- Check recourse if something is wrong. Record who provides the warranty, its duration and exclusions, the return deadline, and shipping or restocking costs.
- Compare the complete cost. Include likely battery or repair expense and compare it with the price and support remaining on the new alternative.
Why buyers worry about refurbished durability
In its 2025 Rethinking Mobile Phones report, GSMA found that around 90% of surveyed consumers rated durability, guaranteed software and security updates for at least seven years, and easy, low-cost repair as important factors in their next phone purchase decision. This is survey evidence about stated priorities, not a guarantee that an individual phone will last that long.

The same GSMA report found that 49% of respondents considered the possibility that a refurbished phone would break sooner a very important concern. Worse-than-expected physical condition was a very important concern for 46%, lack of cleanliness or hygiene for 42%, and a shorter warranty for 38%. These concerns point to practical questions to resolve with the seller; they do not show that every refurbished phone is less reliable.
GSMA also reported poor battery life (33%), poor performance or slowing (27%), and physical damage (19%) as the leading stated reasons for replacing a previous phone. The figures describe survey responses, not predicted failure rates for either new or refurbished devices.
