A freezerless refrigerator is not automatically more efficient than a refrigerator-freezer. The answer depends on the specific models, their capacity and features, and whether you also need a separate freezer. Compare the current annual energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh) for similarly sized models rather than deciding by category name alone.

What is the difference?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) classifies all-refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers as separate product categories. “Freezerless refrigerator” is common consumer wording for an all-refrigerator: a refrigerator without a freezer compartment. DOE’s standards set separate maximum-energy-use equations for these categories, including distinctions such as manual and automatic defrost. Those regulatory limits are not measurements of every model sold, and they do not establish that one category always uses less energy. DOE’s standards for refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers explain the separate classifications.

How to compare energy use fairly

  1. Find each model’s annual energy use. Compare the kWh-per-year figure on the current energy information for the exact models you are considering. Lower annual kWh means lower estimated electricity use, but the figure alone does not account for how much food each appliance can hold.
  2. Match capacity and installation format. Compare models of reasonably similar size and type. A larger refrigerator may use more energy simply because it has more space to cool, so comparing a large all-refrigerator with a compact refrigerator-freezer can be misleading.
  3. Account for configuration and extras. Consider whether the freezer is top-mounted, bottom-mounted, or side-by-side, and whether the model has an automatic ice maker or through-the-door dispenser. DOE’s buyer guidance identifies these as factors in energy use, though its general comparisons are historical rather than current model-specific estimates. DOE’s refrigerator and freezer guide provides background.
  4. Include the whole household setup. If choosing an all-refrigerator means buying or keeping a separate freezer, include that freezer’s energy use, purchase cost, and space needs. Also consider usable storage, local electricity rates, and the upfront price of each option.

What DOE’s historical figures can—and cannot—tell you

DOE’s historical buyer guide reported that top-freezer refrigerators used 10%–25% less energy than bottom-freezer or side-by-side models. It also reported that automatic ice makers and through-the-door dispensers increased energy use by 14%–20%. These are broad, historical comparisons of configurations and features—not a measured efficiency advantage for freezerless models over refrigerator-freezers. Check the current energy information for a specific model before applying them to a purchase.

A separate DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) example illustrates why figures need their context: its 2023 guidance lists 363.5 kWh per year for an ENERGY STAR case and 404 kWh per year for a less-efficient case of an 18.1-cubic-foot, top-freezer, automatic-defrost refrigerator. The example compares two refrigerator cases, not an all-refrigerator with a refrigerator-freezer; its cited price assumptions are in 2022 dollars. DOE FEMP’s refrigerator guidance describes the example.

When a freezerless refrigerator may make sense

An all-refrigerator can be a practical choice if your household needs more fresh-food storage and has adequate freezer capacity elsewhere—or does not need much frozen storage. But any energy benefit depends on the particular appliance and the full setup. A separate freezer can add electricity use and cost, offsetting savings from the refrigerator itself.

To judge whether a more efficient model is worth a higher purchase price, compare the additional upfront cost with the value of its expected energy savings over the appliance’s life. DOE/FEMP describes an efficient product as cost-effective when its lifetime energy savings exceed any additional upfront cost. DOE/FEMP’s purchasing guidance sets out that approach.

A practical decision checklist

  • Compare annual kWh for the exact current models, not just “freezerless” and “refrigerator-freezer” labels.
  • Keep capacity and installation format reasonably similar.
  • Check freezer configuration and features such as ice makers and dispensers.
  • Count the energy use and cost of any separate freezer required by your choice.
  • Weigh usable storage, purchase price, and your local electricity rate alongside energy use.
