Server power is redundant only when a failure on one power path cannot take down the server. For a dual-PSU server, connect each PSU to a different rack PDU, then trace those PDUs back through genuinely independent A and B circuits and upstream equipment. For a single-corded device, a correctly rated automatic or static transfer switch can select between two sources. The right design depends on the equipment’s load and transfer tolerance, and on how much of the electrical path you intend to protect.

What makes a server power path redundant?

Redundancy is an end-to-end property, not a count of power supplies. A typical dual-corded arrangement has two paths:

  • A path: source, distribution and circuit protection, UPS or other backup equipment, rack PDU A, and server PSU A.
  • B path: a separate source and corresponding distribution, backup equipment, rack PDU B, and server PSU B.

Trace both paths all the way back to their source. If they share a breaker, distribution board, UPS, rack PDU, cable route or other component whose failure interrupts both, that component is a common failure point. Two cords plugged into the same PDU do not create independent feeds.

Also confirm what the server’s manufacturer means by redundant PSU operation. Some systems can carry the full load on either PSU; others may have limits or operating modes that affect how much load remains supportable after a PSU or feed fails. Use the rated input, actual peak draw and specified redundancy mode when sizing each path.

N+1 and 2N: what is the difference?

N is the capacity needed to support the intended load. N+1 adds one additional module, circuit or unit beyond that requirement. 2N provides two complete, independent N-capacity systems, commonly designated A and B. The labels describe system capacity and topology; they do not by themselves prove that wiring, controls or facility distribution are independent.

Design Independent capacity and failure domains Maintenance and complexity Fit for server connections
N+1 Required N capacity plus one spare element. A failure or isolation of one element can be tolerated only if the remaining usable capacity supports the load. Less duplication than two complete systems, but the design must account for shared components and how modules are isolated. Can support dual-PSU servers when both feeds and the server’s PSU mode are designed for the intended failure case. It does not automatically provide two independent end-to-end paths.
2N Two independent systems, each with N capacity, arranged as A and B. Each side is intended to support the load if the other side is lost. More equipment, space and distribution complexity because capacity and paths are duplicated; can allow one side to be maintained while the other supports the load. Natural fit for dual-PSU servers connected across A and B. Single-corded devices still need a suitable transfer device to use both sources.

IBM lists N, N+1, 2N and 2(N+1) among facility-feed redundancy categories and describes A-side and B-side feeds. In 2(N+1), each of the two systems has N+1 capacity; it combines duplicated systems with spare capacity within each system. Whether that additional capacity is worthwhile depends on the load, failure assumptions and maintenance plan.

How to connect dual-PSU servers

  1. Check the server’s requirements. Record PSU count, input voltage and current, actual peak draw, connector type and the manufacturer’s supported redundancy mode. Confirm whether one PSU or one feed can support the required load.
  2. Assign each PSU to a different rack PDU. Connect PSU A to PDU A and PSU B to PDU B. Use PDUs with ratings, outlets and input connectors that match the server cords and upstream supply.
  3. Trace each PDU to its upstream path. Identify its circuit, breaker, distribution board or busway, UPS and source. Document shared components and cable routes rather than assuming that labels “A” and “B” guarantee separation.
  4. Size for the failure case. Verify that the surviving path and equipment can carry the load it is expected to support, allowing for manufacturer derating, reserve guidance, battery limits and thermal constraints. Check voltage, phase and local electrical requirements.
  5. Protect support functions. Keep monitoring, management and network equipment powered so alerts and controlled shutdown remain available during an event.

A rack PDU may be metered or switched, but those features do not make its input feed redundant. Choose an appropriately rated A/B rack PDU arrangement and validate both inputs and their upstream circuits as part of the complete design.

Using N+1 UPS modules or two UPS systems

N+1 modules

Install enough UPS or power modules for the required load plus one additional module. Confirm that taking one module out of service or losing it leaves sufficient usable capacity. Check the UPS manufacturer’s limits for module operation, battery support, bypass and temperature; a nominal module count alone does not establish the capacity available in a particular operating state.

2N A/B UPS systems

With 2N, each UPS system and its distribution path is intended to support the load independently. Connect the A and B rack PDUs to their respective systems and check that either side can carry the load assigned to it during the relevant failure or maintenance condition. As Mitsubishi Electric describes this approach, the next UPS redundancy step is two independent N systems supporting A-side and B-side sources for the critical load.

Keep the paths independent in practice. Shared upstream distribution, a common control dependency or a route vulnerable to one incident can undermine the separation even when two UPS units are present. The Kohler/Rehlko Parallel Systems handbook diagram illustrates the dual-supplied pattern: servers connect to two PDUs, with each PDU supplied by a different UPS system.

What to do when a device has one power inlet

A single-corded server cannot connect its one inlet to two rack PDUs directly. A dual-input rack ATS PDU or suitable static transfer switch can take two sources and supply the device from one selected source. Eaton describes 3-phase ATS rack PDUs as a way to provide redundant power to high-density servers that do not have redundant power supplies.

Before choosing one, verify the switch’s rated kW or kVA, voltage, phase, input and output connectors, outlet count and monitoring features. Most importantly, check transfer behavior against the device’s ride-through tolerance. Establish whether transfer is break-before-make, whether the sources must be synchronized, and whether the server can tolerate the interruption. A transfer switch cannot compensate for two inputs that share the same upstream failure point.

Coordinate UPS runtime with generator backup

A UPS bridges interruptions and conditions power; it does not provide unlimited runtime. Generators and automatic transfer equipment are used to address longer utility outages. Check the available UPS runtime at the actual load and account for the time required for generator start and transfer. Loads that cannot safely wait for restoration need a monitoring and controlled-shutdown plan for the runtime available.

Vendor-specific example: DGX H100 power

NVIDIA’s current design guide gives a preferred high-density pattern for its DGX H100 deployment of 415 VAC, 32 A, three-phase, N+1. It requires each rack PDU to originate from separate data-center PDUs and calls for facility UPS and generator backup. For the cited N+1 arrangement, NVIDIA specifies each power source sized to support 50% of total peak load. These are requirements for the guide’s stated deployment, not universal values or a general rule for sizing either side of every dual-PSU server.

Commissioning and maintenance checks

  • Draw and label each complete path from source through circuit protection, distribution, UPS, rack PDU and cord to the server PSU.
  • Record the intended load and capacity of each path, along with relevant derating, battery and thermal limits.
  • Confirm rack PDU voltage, phase, current rating, receptacles and connectors match the upstream circuits and equipment.
  • During an approved maintenance window, perform documented failover and return-to-normal tests. Record load, alarms, transfer time and whether any equipment resets.
  • Recheck the design after adding servers or changing firmware, UPS modules or PDUs; each change can alter load or supported behavior.
