If Reddit works on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi, the problem is likely somewhere along the Wi-Fi network path—not necessarily your Reddit account or phone. Check Reddit’s status first, then compare the app and website across devices before changing router or DNS settings.
Why Reddit works on data but not Wi-Fi
Your phone reaches Reddit through different network paths on cellular data and Wi-Fi. Cellular success shows Reddit and your account can work on at least one path; it does not confirm that your Wi-Fi connection, router, DNS resolver, filters, or internet provider can reach Reddit correctly.
The pattern helps narrow the search. If Reddit fails on every device using the same Wi-Fi, investigate the router, DNS, network filtering, or ISP. If the website works on Wi-Fi but the Reddit app does not, focus first on the app.
Check Reddit’s service status
Before changing settings, check Reddit’s official status page for an incident affecting reddit.com, mobile web, or the app. If Reddit reports an active incident, local troubleshooting may not help; check again after the service issue is resolved.

Find out whether the problem is the app or the Wi-Fi network
- Keep Wi-Fi on. Open reddit.com in your phone’s browser. If it loads, the Wi-Fi path can reach the site, and the app becomes the more likely source of the problem.
- Try a private or incognito browser window. If Reddit loads there but not in a regular window, browser cookies or cached site data may be involved.
- Test another device on the same Wi-Fi. If Reddit fails on multiple devices, look beyond the app on your phone. If only one device fails, focus on that device’s app or network settings.
Note what happens: a timeout or name-resolution error points toward a connection or DNS issue, while a working website and failing app point toward an app-specific issue.
Try low-risk fixes first
Restart the phone and router
Restart the phone, then restart the router and reconnect to Wi-Fi. Google’s Android guidance recommends restarting the router and moving closer to it when diagnosing a Wi-Fi connection; see Google’s Android connection troubleshooting advice. If signal is weak, move closer to the router and retry.

Check for network filters and login pages
Router parental controls, content filters, ad-blocking DNS, VPN or proxy settings, and an unfinished captive-portal login can interfere with access to a site or app. If you manage the router or device, temporarily disable one relevant filter at a time and retest Reddit. Restore settings that do not affect the problem. On a public or managed network, complete its sign-in page or ask its administrator about restrictions.
Test DNS if Reddit times out or will not resolve
DNS translates a site name such as reddit.com into the address a device needs to connect. If the failure is a timeout or name-resolution error, testing a different DNS resolver can help determine whether the configured resolver is involved. It is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix: it will not repair every routing issue or remove a block imposed elsewhere.

One March 2026 report in Reddit’s r/bugs community says an Android app began working on Wi-Fi after the author changed Private DNS from Automatic to dns.google, which the author attributed to ISP DNS routing. That is an individual case, not confirmation that the same change will work for other networks.
Changing DNS changes which resolver handles domain lookups, so make a note of the original setting and revert if the test does not help. On Android, the reported setting is Private DNS; its location and available options can vary by device and Android version.

If only the Reddit app fails
- Force close and reopen Reddit.
- Clear the app cache. On Android, open Settings, then Apps, select Reddit, open Storage or Storage & cache, and choose Clear cache. Menu names vary by device. Google explains that clearing an app cache removes temporary data.
- Update Reddit using your device’s app store, then try again on Wi-Fi.
- Reinstall only if needed. Record your login details first so you can sign in again.
When to contact your ISP or consider router changes
If multiple devices still cannot load Reddit on the same Wi-Fi after a router restart and checks for filters and DNS, contact your internet provider. Give them the time the issue occurred, the affected domains or Reddit services, the devices tested, and whether Reddit works on cellular data.
A Wi-Fi router may need reconfiguration or replacement only after the problem is confirmed across devices and basic checks have failed. It is not a universal fix: an ISP routing issue, DNS problem, filter, or Reddit incident can produce a similar symptom. A 2024 report in Reddit’s r/help community describes Wi-Fi failure with Reddit working on mobile data; the poster had tried cache clearing, reinstalling, and updates, while a reply reported success after restarting the router. These reports illustrate possible outcomes, not a reliable diagnosis for every case.

Use the scope of the failure to choose your next step
