The reliable way to create a Reddit link preview image is to generate a 1200 × 630 pixel PNG, publish it at a publicly reachable URL, and reference that URL in your page metadata. A generator creates the artwork; it does not by itself make Reddit display the image. You must also set the page’s og:image (and usually its dimensions) and then verify that the relevant Reddit experience can fetch the asset. The 1200 × 630 size is the specification used by the reviewed OG Image Generator guide, not a universal Reddit rule.
What a Reddit Open Graph image generator does
An Open Graph (OG) image is the social-preview graphic associated with a web page. A generator supplies an editor for the asset—typically a template, title, description, colors and background—then exports a PNG or gives you code and metadata to add to the page. The reviewed OG Image Generator documentation describes a browser-based editor and says its data remains on the device, a vendor statement rather than an independently verified privacy audit.

Reddit can use information from the linked page when it builds a card, but the exact presentation depends on where the link is viewed and on Reddit’s current crawler and rendering behavior. Do not treat an OG generator as a guarantee of a thumbnail, a particular crop, more clicks or higher ranking.
Choose the image format and content
Use 1200 × 630 as a practical starting point
The reviewed guide uses 1200 × 630 pixels (an aspect ratio of about 1.91:1). It is a useful, widely supported OG canvas, but neither that guide nor the available Reddit documentation establishes it as a mandatory size for every Reddit placement. Keep important text away from the edges because cards can be resized or cropped.
Design for a small card
- Put the page’s subject in a short, high-contrast headline.
- Use one visual focal point instead of a busy collage.
- Check text at a reduced preview size; thin fonts and long subtitles disappear first.
- Use a background that contrasts with the text and any logo.
- Do not place claims in the image that the linked page does not support.
Static editor or dynamic generator?
| Need | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A few hand-designed pages | Static template editor | PNG export, dimensions and whether your data is processed locally |
| Many pages with changing titles | Dynamic API or code template | Font loading, deterministic output, caching and failure handling |
| Metadata diagnosis | Preview/debug tool | Whether it fetches the public URL and reports the tags it found |
Examples of products that describe OG editing or generation include OGForge and OGFrame. Their feature and pricing claims should be checked on the vendors’ current pages; no controlled comparison establishes that one produces better Reddit results.
How to create the image in a browser
- Choose a template. Start with a 1200 × 630 canvas if you are following the reviewed guide.
- Replace the title and description. Use the exact topic of the destination page, not a bait headline that appears only on Reddit.
- Set colors and background. Check contrast and remove decorative elements that become illegible when reduced.
- Preview at card size. Inspect the smallest readable version and the edges for likely cropping.
- Export a PNG. Give the file a stable name such as
guide-open-graph.pngand upload it to a public, HTTPS URL. - Record the final URL. The metadata must use the actual public URL, including the correct path and file extension.
A generator’s download is not enough if Reddit’s crawler cannot reach the file. Avoid a URL that requires a login, a short-lived session, a private network, or a browser-only JavaScript action.
Add the image to your page metadata
Place these tags in the destination page’s <head>. Replace the example URL with your own absolute HTTPS URL:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.example.com/images/guide-open-graph.png">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://www.example.com/images/guide-open-graph.png">
The width, height, Twitter-card and Twitter-image examples come from the reviewed generator guide. They are useful metadata, not proof that Reddit will honor every tag in every context. Keep the OG image URL consistent with the canonical page and ensure your server returns the image bytes with an image content type.
Framework and cache considerations
- In a static site, edit the document template or front matter that writes the final HTML.
- In a server-rendered app, generate the tags in the response head, not only after client-side JavaScript runs.
- Purge your page or CDN cache after changing the image URL. A cached HTML document can continue pointing to the old asset.
- Keep the old image available for a while when changing URLs; previously cached cards may still request it.
What Reddit’s official documentation does—and does not—confirm
Reddit’s Building for Logged Out Players guide discusses a share-image URL for logged-out experiences and says a default app- or post-level preview is used when one is not set. That is an official, specific context; it should not be expanded into a promise about every web-link card. Reddit’s help page on sharing content, How do I share Reddit content off Reddit?, is also relevant to sharing behavior but does not establish a universal OG-image rule.
A third-party Reddit Open Graph Preview guide describes the submitter’s link headline as separate from the linked page’s image and discusses crawler access and redirects. Those diagnostics are plausible checks, but the detailed explanations have not been independently confirmed by an official Reddit source. Treat them as troubleshooting hypotheses, not guarantees.
Verify the finished page before posting
- View the raw HTML source (not only the DOM inspector after scripts run) and search for
og:image. - Confirm the value is an absolute URL and exactly matches the uploaded file.
- Open the image URL in a private browser window. It should load without cookies, authentication or a special referrer.
- Check the response for a successful status and an image content type; investigate redirects, hotlink protection and access-control rules if it fails.
- Confirm the HTML and image are served over HTTPS and that robots, firewall or bot rules are not blocking ordinary crawlers.
- Submit a test link only after deployment and cache invalidation. Reddit may retain a previously fetched preview, so changing the file at the same URL may not immediately change an existing card.
Troubleshoot a blank or missing Reddit thumbnail
There is no image at all
Cause: the page lacks og:image, the tag is in the wrong document, or the URL is relative/private. Fix: add an absolute public URL in the server-delivered head and open that URL without being logged in.
The image URL redirects or returns an error
Cause: a redirect chain, expired signed URL, hotlink protection, a firewall rule or a missing file. Fix: use a stable HTTPS URL, reduce redirects, allow the image request, and verify the final response directly.

Cause: access depends on cookies, JavaScript, geolocation, a user-agent allowlist or a bot challenge. Fix: make the asset directly fetchable and review CDN/WAF logs. Do not assume that a normal browser session represents Reddit’s fetch.
The old image keeps appearing
Cause: cached HTML or a previously fetched Reddit preview. Fix: purge your site/CDN cache, use a new image URL when appropriate, and allow time for external caches to refresh. Avoid promising an instant refresh.
The crop or text looks wrong
Cause: responsive card treatment or an aspect ratio different from the source canvas. Fix: keep the focal point central, use generous margins and test the 1200 × 630 source at small sizes. No available evidence establishes a crop that Reddit guarantees.
The title is not the one in the image
Cause: Reddit’s submitter text and the linked page’s preview image are separate inputs. Fix: write the intended link title when submitting and keep the page’s metadata and artwork aligned.

Performance, reliability and cost decisions
- Cache immutable assets. A versioned filename lets a CDN serve the image quickly while a changed filename makes invalidation explicit.
- Keep dimensions intentional. A very large source increases transfer cost without improving a small card; export a quality level that keeps text and logos crisp.
- Generate deterministically. For programmatic pages, pin fonts and templates so the same input produces the same image across builds.
- Monitor failures. Log image-generation errors separately from page-render errors, and alert when a generated URL is missing or returns a non-image response.
- Protect secrets. Never put an API key or private template endpoint in page metadata or client-side JavaScript.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF of a public URL. Before capture, it can accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
For a page whose rendered visual—not a hand-designed OG card—is the required asset, call the API as documented at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request/resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. These screenshots still need a publicly reachable URL and should be checked against your intended Reddit metadata workflow; an API capture is not the same thing as setting og:image for a page. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Reddit require an Open Graph image?
No universal requirement is established by the available official documentation. Reddit’s logged-out-player guide describes a specific share-image setting and a default preview fallback, while web-link behavior can vary.
Can I host the OG image on a private storage bucket?
Not if Reddit’s fetch cannot access it. Use a stable, publicly reachable HTTPS URL that does not require login, cookies or a browser-only challenge.
Will changing the image guarantee a new Reddit preview?
No. Cached HTML and previously fetched previews can continue to show the old asset; changing the URL and allowing caches to refresh is more reliable than overwriting one file.
Is 1200 × 630 an official Reddit requirement?
It is the size used by the reviewed OG Image Generator guide. The available sources do not establish it as mandatory for every Reddit placement.
