There is no universally best mechanical keyboard switch: choose red for a smooth, uninterrupted press, brown for a tactile bump without a deliberate click, or blue for tactile feedback with an audible click. Those labels describe feel categories, not guaranteed performance advantages, and specifications vary by manufacturer and exact model.
What do red, brown, and blue switches feel like?
These examples use CHERRY MX2A switches. Other manufacturers may use the same color names with different specifications, so treat the model name—not color alone—as the reliable reference.

Which switch should you choose?
Choose red if you prefer a smooth press
Red is the straightforward option if you want a linear feel without a pressure point. CHERRY describes its MX2A Red as having minimal resistance, but this does not establish that red switches make someone faster at gaming or typing.
Choose brown if you want tactile feedback without a deliberate click
Brown adds a soft tactile contact point while avoiding the deliberate click described for blue. It may suit someone who wants to feel feedback during a press but does not want that particular click cue. It is not objectively a better compromise, and it should not be assumed to be quiet.

Choose blue if you want tactile and audible feedback
Blue combines tactile feedback with a click you can hear. If that sound is unwelcome in your environment, blue is the least suitable of these three descriptions; the sources do not establish decibel levels or how loud a complete keyboard will sound.
These are preference-based choices. The manufacturer descriptions do not provide an independent head-to-head test, a representative survey of user preferences, or evidence that one type improves speed or productivity.

Why color alone does not tell you the exact specification
Switch colors are conventions, not universal engineering specifications. As one manufacturer-specific comparison, Gateron lists its regular Red as linear at 45±15 gf, Brown as tactile at 55±15 gf, and Blue as clicky at 65±15 gf. For all three in that guide, Gateron lists 1.5±0.5 mm pre-travel and 2.5+0.5/-0 mm total travel. These are Gateron figures for the switches in its comparison, not measurements for CHERRY MX2A switches or guarantees for every red, brown, or blue switch. When force or travel matters to you, check the specification for the exact switch model and manufacturer rather than inferring it from the color. A manufacturer’s published durability figure is also a claim, not an independent test: CHERRY lists more than 100 million keystrokes for MX2A Red and Brown and more than 50 million for MX2A Blue on its product pages.

How to try switches before choosing
If you are unsure which feel you prefer, a mechanical keyboard switch sampler lets you compare presses before committing to a full set. CHERRY describes an MX Experience Box containing 10 switches; check the linked product information for its contents and availability. Pressing samples side by side can help you decide whether you prefer a smooth travel, a tactile point, or a tactile point with a click.

A switch that feels right still has to fit your keyboard. Do not assume loose switches are interchangeable: board design and switch profile can differ, and low-profile switches are not automatically compatible with normal-profile boards.

- Profile: confirm whether the board takes normal-profile or low-profile switches.
- Socket and pins: check the PCB’s pin configuration and whether it has hot-swap sockets. A hot-swap board permits switch changes without soldering, but socket and pin layouts must still match.
- LED arrangement: verify that the switch’s LED opening or arrangement is compatible with the keyboard’s lighting hardware.
