With a compatible optic, mount, rail and iron sights, the irons can remain visible through the optic window as an alternate mechanical sight picture. Neither arrangement is universally better: the choice depends on the exact hardware and the sight picture you prefer.
How red dots and iron sights differ
A red dot is an electronic optic that presents an illuminated aiming point. Iron sights provide a mechanical aiming reference. A compatible setup can make both sight pictures available, but the optic does not automatically make the iron sights usable as a backup: their fit, visibility and confirmed zero matter.
Pros and considerations
Red dot optic
- Offers: An illuminated aiming point; supported AR-15 configurations can be arranged so the iron sights are visible through the optic.
- Consider: It is an electronic sight. Check compatibility among the specific optic, mount and rifle, and confirm the zero according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Iron sights
- Offer: A mechanical aiming reference that may serve as an alternative if a compatible optic becomes unusable.
- Consider: Fixed or folding design, sight height and the mount’s position affect whether the irons are visible and practical to use.
These are differences in function and setup, not proof that one system is faster, more accurate or more reliable in every situation. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish universal comparative performance results.
Absolute vs. lower-third co-witness
Co-witness describes the relationship between an optic’s aiming point and the rifle’s iron sights when both are visible. SIG Sauer explains that the relationship depends on the optic, mounting system, rail and iron-sight height. SIG Sauer’s co-witness explanation defines two common arrangements:
#1 Best Overall
- The Strikefire II Red/Green Dot is a rugged, reliable red dot sight that is at home in a variety of applications. It allows the user to operate between two dot colors and ten brightness settings to easily adjust for changing conditions
- Fully multi-coated lenses provide a clean and bright, unobscured point of view. Unlimited eye relief allows for rapid transitions
- The single-piece chasis is compact and lightweight but still delivers shockproof performance holding up to whatever you throw at it. Nitrogen purging and o-ring seals ensure fogproof and waterproof performance
- An offset cantilever mount is provided; allowing you to move the sight forward to be used in conjunction with a magnifier and backup iron sights
- With aesthetics and functionality in mind, the power controls are at the rear of the Strikefire for easy access. The Strikefire II runs off a CR2 battery
| Arrangement | Where the irons appear | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute co-witness | The iron sights align centrally in the optic’s view. | The irons occupy the central sight picture. Confirm that this arrangement suits your setup and preference. |
| Lower-third co-witness | The iron sights appear in the bottom third of the optic window, with the reticle higher in the window. | It requires compatible sight and mount heights, and practice using the iron sight picture. |
SIG Sauer describes the iron sights in these arrangements as retaining the same zero. That does not remove the need to verify the actual rifle’s setup. A co-witness label alone does not establish that a particular optic and mount will align with every AR-15 configuration.
How to approach setup safely
- Check the exact instructions. Consult the current manuals for your firearm, optic, mount and sights. EOTECH says its sights are designed to co-witness with iron sights on a standard AR-15 platform, but its model-specific instructions apply to its products; follow the instructions for your own optic. EOTECH’s help-center instructions describe a mechanical alignment method.
- Make the firearm safe before handling or adjusting it. EOTECH’s procedure directs users to check that the firearm is unloaded and safe before beginning. Follow the safety directions for your firearm and optic. EOTECH’s instructions
- Verify the parts as a system. Check the optic footprint, rail interface, mount and iron-sight height together. The desired co-witness depends on their relationship, not just the name of the mount or optic. SIG Sauer’s explanation
- Treat visual alignment as an initial aid, not final confirmation. Use iron sights to help align an optic only where its manufacturer supports that method. Leupold describes aligning an optic against already-zeroed iron sights as one possible method, while directing the user to shoot to verify. Its example zero distances are not universal recommendations for every rifle or purpose. Leupold’s zeroing guidance
- Confirm the final zero as directed. EOTECH and Leupold both describe shooting to verify zero. Follow the procedure and distance guidance in the instructions for your particular optic and intended use. EOTECH · Leupold
When backup irons are useful
Iron sights can provide an alternate reference if an optic malfunctions or is damaged, as SIG Sauer and HIVIZ describe. SIG Sauer · HIVIZ That role depends on the irons being installed, compatible with the optic and mount, secured, visible enough to use and confirmed as part of the setup. HIVIZ notes that its described co-witness technique does not apply to higher mounts or magnified optics, so check the limits of the specific method and equipment rather than assuming all combinations work.

Choosing an arrangement
- Choose absolute co-witness if you want the irons aligned centrally in the optic window and the central sight picture suits you.
- Choose lower-third co-witness if you prefer the irons lower in the window and your optic, mount and sights support that alignment.
- If the irons are not visible or the parts do not align as intended, do not assume the setup provides a usable backup. Recheck manufacturer compatibility guidance before relying on it.
