Short answer: Cyberpunk 2077 has the higher graphics ceiling on a modern, powerful PC because ray tracing and path-traced Overdrive can produce more advanced lighting, reflections and shadows. Red Dead Redemption 2 is usually the more convincing natural world, and the safer choice on consoles or modest PCs where those effects are unavailable. The winner depends on whether you value peak rendering technology or consistent, cinematic realism.
A hardware-dependent verdict
A screenshot contest made on a high-end PC with Cyberpunk 2077’s ray-traced settings enabled will usually favor Cyberpunk. Its renderer can calculate lighting, reflections, ambient occlusion and shadows with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, while Overdrive applies path-traced lighting for an even more demanding approximation of how light behaves in a scene.
That does not make every Cyberpunk scene look more realistic. Red Dead Redemption 2 builds its visual identity around composition: natural light, weather, terrain, animals, clothing, animation and sound all change together. A forest at dawn, a muddy road after rain or a camp moving through snow can feel more coherent than a technically richer but busier city scene. On a console, or on a PC that must use conventional rasterized rendering, that coherence often gives RDR2 the stronger overall impression.
To compare the games fairly, hold resolution, frame-rate target, upscaling mode and platform generation constant. A native-resolution RDR2 image at a stable frame rate is not a fair match for a heavily upscaled Cyberpunk image with every ray-tracing option enabled, and vice versa.

What “better graphics” actually includes
Graphics quality is not one setting. It is the combined result of lighting, materials, geometry, animation, image reconstruction and performance. The two games lead in different areas.
- Lighting technology: Cyberpunk offers rasterized presets, multiple ray-tracing options and the path-traced Overdrive mode. RDR2 uses rasterized lighting with detailed volumetric effects.
- Reflections: Ray-traced reflections in Cyberpunk can show light sources and surrounding geometry that screen-space techniques miss, especially in wet streets, glass and dark interiors.
- Natural environments: RDR2’s landscapes, weather transitions, vegetation, animals and atmospheric perspective are tightly integrated, so scenes remain believable while you move through them.
- Characters and motion: Facial expressions, cloth, hair, animals and contextual animations matter as much as texture resolution. A still screenshot cannot show how convincingly a world reacts to the player.
- Image quality: Resolution, anti-aliasing and upscaling can make a lower-preset game appear cleaner than a higher-preset game running below its intended internal resolution.
- Consistency: A game that maintains its lighting and material rules across interiors, exteriors, day and night can feel more realistic than one that produces a few spectacular effects but has uneven scenes.
Why Cyberpunk 2077 wins the maximum-effects contest
Ray-traced lighting features
Cyberpunk 2077 supports ray-traced ambient occlusion, diffuse illumination, reflections and shadows. These options are separate from the ordinary rasterized presets, so “Ultra” without ray tracing is not the same visual target as a ray-traced configuration. Ray tracing can reveal indirect light in areas that would otherwise be too dark, produce reflections that include objects outside the camera view and keep shadows tied more accurately to the lights that cast them.
The advantage is most obvious at night. Neon signs can influence nearby surfaces, wet pavement can carry a more complete reflection of the street, and interiors can receive colored light from windows or signage. In a conventional rasterized image, those effects may be approximated with precomputed data, screen-space information or artist-authored probes. Those techniques can look excellent, but they have limits when the reflected object is off-screen or when lighting changes dynamically.

Ray Tracing: Overdrive replaces several approximations with path-traced lighting. It is designed for very powerful GPUs rather than mainstream hardware. CD PROJEKT RED currently recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series 4070 Ti or higher for Overdrive. That recommendation is a hardware target, not a promise of a particular frame rate; resolution, CPU load, scene complexity and the chosen upscaling mode still affect performance.
Overdrive is therefore a demonstration of Cyberpunk’s ceiling, not the baseline experience every player should expect. A system that can run the standard rasterized preset smoothly may need to reduce resolution, use an upscaler or disable some ray-traced effects for a responsive frame rate. The visual gain is real, but so is the workload.
Separate presets change the answer
CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty-era requirements separate non-ray-traced and ray-traced presets, including a ray-tracing-low tier. That structure matters because the game has several legitimate visual targets. A comparison that simply says “Cyberpunk on Ultra” leaves out whether ray tracing is active, which effects are enabled and what internal resolution the game is rendering.
Ray-traced reflections are a particularly expensive choice. They improve image quality in reflective and nighttime scenes, but they add work for every relevant ray and bounce. If performance is unstable, disabling reflections first can preserve much of the game’s appearance while removing a substantial part of the cost. Moving from Overdrive to a conventional ray-traced preset is another way to retain some advanced lighting without treating path tracing as an all-or-nothing decision.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2 remains a realism benchmark
Rasterized lighting used deliberately
Red Dead Redemption 2 launched without a ray-tracing pipeline. Its PC presentation instead combines conventional lighting with high-resolution textures, detailed geometry, atmospheric effects and volumetric options. The result is not a lesser version of a ray-traced image; it is a different rendering strategy, tuned around a large natural world.
Sunlight changes the appearance of dust, grass, rock and fabric. Fog and smoke occupy space rather than appearing as a flat overlay. Clouds, storms and sunsets alter the color and contrast of a scene, while the animation system makes horses, wildlife, crowds and the player character respond contextually. Those systems reinforce one another, which is why RDR2 can look photographic even without hardware ray tracing.
PC tuning and the quality slider
The PC version exposes high-resolution and volumetric options, along with a quality slider. Rockstar Games says the slider can analyze a PC’s capabilities and adjust a range of background parameters according to the selected resolution and the preference for higher performance or higher quality graphics. It is a useful starting point, but it is not a substitute for checking the individual settings that matter most to your scene.
Volumetric quality, lighting quality, water physics, reflection quality, grass distance and texture resolution do not affect every scene equally. A setting that is expensive in a forest or during a storm may have little effect inside a building. After using the automatic slider, test a busy town, open wilderness, rain or snow, and a night scene before deciding that the preset is stable.

Night streets and artificial light: Cyberpunk’s clearest win
Dense nighttime scenes are where Cyberpunk’s ray tracing earns its advantage. Numerous small light sources, glossy surfaces and deep shadows give ray-traced reflections and indirect illumination something meaningful to show. Path tracing can make light from signs and windows spread through an area more naturally than a fixed approximation.
With ray tracing disabled, the difference narrows. Cyberpunk still has strong art direction, emissive signage and detailed materials, but the most distinctive improvements are no longer present. In that configuration, judge the games on composition and material consistency rather than assuming the more modern setting must look better.
Mountains, plains and forests: RDR2’s strongest territory
RDR2’s environmental composition is difficult to beat in daylight. Terrain, vegetation, sky, haze, wildlife and weather are designed as one moving system. A camera pan can reveal layers of mountains, distant atmospheric perspective, changing cloud cover and small foreground motion without breaking the visual style.

Cyberpunk is not trying to model that kind of wilderness. Its dense architecture, signage and crowds create a different visual challenge. If your definition of realism includes natural scale, quiet spaces and believable weather transitions, RDR2 is the stronger choice regardless of whether Cyberpunk can produce more advanced individual light paths.
Rain, snow and wet surfaces
Both games benefit from wet surfaces and changing weather, but they emphasize different strengths. Cyberpunk’s ray-traced reflections can make wet pavement respond to surrounding lights with greater scene awareness. RDR2’s rain, snow, mud, fog and changing visibility contribute to the sense that the entire environment has a physical climate.
For a fair test, compare the games at the same output resolution and inspect motion, not just a paused frame. Look for shimmering vegetation, unstable reflections, shadow transitions and the way particles remain anchored as the camera moves.
Characters, animals and animation
RDR2 places unusual emphasis on contextual animation: riding, handling weapons, interacting with objects, grooming horses, wildlife behavior and the gradual effects of weather and mud. Those details are visible at ordinary viewing distance and can make the world feel alive even when no advanced lighting effect is active.
Cyberpunk’s strengths include dense crowds, distinctive character materials, facial detail and interior animation. Compare a conversation, a crowded street and a close-up rather than relying on a landscape screenshot. If you care about faces, clothing and urban density, Cyberpunk may be more impressive; if you care about systemic behavior and natural motion, RDR2 often feels more convincing.

Small interiors expose differences in lighting models. Cyberpunk’s ray-traced diffuse illumination and reflections can connect a room’s surfaces to its light sources, particularly when colored signs or windows illuminate dark areas. RDR2 relies on authored and rasterized lighting, but its restrained materials, shadows and environmental art can still produce a cohesive room.
Do not judge reflections from a single mirror or puddle. Check whether the reflection remains stable while walking, whether off-screen objects appear when expected and whether the effect survives camera movement without excessive noise or blur.

Performance, resolution and upscaling
Visual quality and performance are inseparable. A ray-traced image rendered at a lower internal resolution may have more accurate lighting but less stable fine detail than a native-resolution rasterized image. Conversely, a cleanly reconstructed Cyberpunk frame can look excellent while still requiring more GPU work than an equivalent RDR2 frame.
Use the same procedure for both games:
- Select the same display resolution and refresh-rate target.
- Choose native rendering or use the same class of upscaling mode; record whether the image is reconstructed from a lower internal resolution.
- Set a frame-rate cap appropriate to the display instead of comparing uncapped peaks in different scenes.
- Repeat the test in a daylight exterior, a busy nighttime scene, a weather event and an interior.
- Watch frame-time consistency as well as the average counter. Stutter, shader compilation and traversal hitching can make a game feel worse even when its nominal frame rate is higher.
Because Cyberpunk’s ray-traced effects add workload, its maximum visual mode can reduce performance substantially compared with rasterized settings. RDR2 also has demanding volumetric, grass and water options, so it is not automatically easy to run. The relevant question is which game maintains your chosen image quality and responsiveness on your hardware.
PC requirements and what they imply
The official requirement structures reveal how differently the games scale.
| Game and mode | Published guidance | What it means for this comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 PC minimum | Windows 10; Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300-class processor; 8 GB memory; GTX 770 or Radeon R9 280-class graphics; 150 GB storage. | This is a minimum target for running the game, not a guarantee of high settings, high resolution or a stable modern frame-rate target. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 non-ray-traced presets | CD PROJEKT RED publishes separate requirements by rasterized quality tier. | Use the tier matching your resolution and quality target rather than treating one minimum specification as representative of every preset. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 ray-traced presets | The Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty-era table adds ray-tracing tiers, including ray-tracing-low. | Ray tracing is a distinct hardware target; a PC suitable for rasterized Ultra may not be suitable for the same resolution with RT enabled. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 Ray Tracing: Overdrive | Current guidance recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series 4070 Ti or higher. | Overdrive belongs in a high-end-PC comparison and should not be treated as the default console or mid-range experience. |
These requirements are not directly comparable as a simple winner. RDR2’s minimum specification describes a game with no ray-tracing pipeline, while Cyberpunk publishes separate targets for conventional and ray-traced rendering. Always check the current support tables for your operating system, processor, graphics card, memory and storage before choosing a preset.
PS5 and Xbox: how the answer changes
Console comparisons should be made within the modes each console version actually exposes. PC-only ray-tracing guidance, including the RTX 40 Series Overdrive recommendation, does not describe a console configuration. On PS5 or Xbox, compare the available quality and performance modes at the same display resolution and accept that a console may use a fixed internal resolution or reconstruction method.
RDR2’s console presentation benefits from its art direction, weather and animation even when advanced PC options are unavailable. Cyberpunk can still look spectacular through dense geometry, materials, crowds and lighting authored for the console version, but the visual ceiling of its PC path-traced mode is not part of that comparison.

How to make your own side-by-side test
- Match the display target. Use the same television or monitor, output resolution, HDR state and refresh-rate target. Disable display processing that changes sharpness or contrast between inputs.
- Start with balanced presets. Compare each game at a sensible high-quality rasterized setting before enabling special effects. This establishes how the art direction and base materials differ.
- Test Cyberpunk in stages. Record a rasterized run, then enable ray-traced ambient occlusion, reflections, diffuse illumination and shadows in separate steps. Finally test Overdrive only if your GPU meets the recommended class.
- Test RDR2’s expensive options separately. Use its quality slider as a starting point, then inspect volumetrics, lighting, grass, water, reflections and texture resolution in demanding locations.
- Use repeatable routes. Walk the same type of route through a city at night, an open landscape in daylight, a storm or snowfall, and an interior. Avoid judging one game from its best showcase scene and the other from a random location.
- Evaluate motion. Pan the camera, ride or drive through foliage, move past reflective surfaces and watch crowds or animals. Note shimmer, ghosting, pop-in, shadow crawling and frame-time spikes.
- Write down the settings. Include resolution, upscaling, ray-tracing options, quality preset, frame cap and platform. Without this record, screenshots are not meaningful evidence.
Settings that provide the biggest practical gains
Cyberpunk 2077
- Enable ray-traced reflections when reflective streets, glass and night scenes are central to your priorities and your frame-time budget allows it.
- Use the standard ray-traced presets before trying Overdrive. This preserves some advanced lighting while avoiding the full path-tracing workload.
- If performance is poor, disable reflections first, then reduce other ray-traced effects or return to a rasterized preset.
- Keep an eye on internal resolution when using an upscaler. A high preset at an aggressively reduced internal resolution may look softer than a lower preset rendered more cleanly.
- Compare image stability while moving. Noise, ghosting or shimmering can offset the theoretical accuracy of a lighting mode.
Red Dead Redemption 2
- Use the quality slider to establish a baseline, then verify the result in towns, forests, storms and snow rather than trusting one location.
- Preserve texture quality when graphics memory allows it; distant texture detail is a major part of the game’s cinematic look.
- Adjust volumetric, grass, water and lighting options according to the scene that matters most to you. Their cost is not uniform across the world.
- Keep the resolution and image-reconstruction choice consistent when comparing against Cyberpunk.
- Use a frame-rate cap if uncapped rendering causes uneven frame times or excessive hardware heat.
Common comparison mistakes
Calling a preset “Ultra” without naming the renderer
Cyberpunk’s rasterized Ultra and a ray-traced or Overdrive configuration are different visual targets. State the renderer and individual RT options whenever you publish a screenshot or performance claim.
Comparing different generations of hardware
A modern PC with a high-end GPU can expose effects that are not available on a console or older PC. Platform, graphics card and display resolution belong in the caption of every comparison.
Using one screenshot as proof of realism
One frame can favor neon reflections, a sunset or a carefully composed vista. Move through several environments and include animation, weather and image stability.
Ignoring frame time
A visually impressive mode that repeatedly stutters may be less enjoyable than a slightly less advanced mode with consistent responsiveness. Record frame-time behavior, not only a peak or average frame-rate number.
Assuming missing ray tracing means poor lighting
RDR2’s rasterized approach is supported by art direction, volumetrics, materials and animation. Lack of a ray-tracing pipeline does not prevent a scene from looking natural; it simply means the game reaches that result through different techniques.
Which game should you choose for graphics?
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Highest possible lighting and reflection technology on a powerful PC | Cyberpunk 2077 | Ray tracing and path-traced Overdrive provide the higher technical ceiling, with the RTX 40 Series 4070 Ti-or-higher recommendation for Overdrive. |
| Natural landscapes, weather and systemic environmental detail | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Its rasterized lighting, volumetrics, animation and world composition remain exceptionally cohesive. |
| A console comparison | Depends on the available modes and your priorities | Judge the actual PS5 or Xbox quality and performance modes; PC-only Overdrive should not decide the result. |
| A modest or older PC | Usually Red Dead Redemption 2 at an appropriate preset, or Cyberpunk without RT | Cyberpunk’s advanced modes add substantial workload. Choose the game that meets your resolution and frame-time target without sacrificing too much image quality. |
| Nighttime city scenes, neon and reflective surfaces | Cyberpunk 2077 with suitable RT settings | Ray-traced reflections and indirect lighting are most visible in these conditions. |
| Daylight wilderness, animals and changing weather | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Its environmental systems are designed around those scenes and remain persuasive without hardware ray tracing. |
Bottom line
Cyberpunk 2077 is the technical graphics winner when a modern high-end PC can run its ray-traced modes, especially Overdrive path tracing. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the better-looking game for many players when the comparison is made on a console, a modest PC or a side-by-side journey through natural landscapes, weather and animation. Match the hardware, resolution, upscaling and performance target first; then choose between Cyberpunk’s rendering ambition and RDR2’s environmental coherence.
