If you accidentally swipe away an alert, check your phone’s built-in notification log. On a supported Android device, open Settings > Notifications > Notification history, turn on Use Notification history (the label can vary), then return to that screen to review alerts recorded after activation. On Google Pixel, dismissed alerts appear under Recently dismissed and recent activity under Last 24 hours. The critical limitation is timing: Android cannot show an alert that arrived before Notification history was enabled.
What Android notification history actually does
Notification history is a built-in recovery screen for supported Android phones. It gives you a place to inspect alerts you may have dismissed, along with other recent notification activity. Android Open Source Project documentation describes the screen as containing snoozed notifications, a handful of recently dismissed notifications, and a history covering the last day of notifications.
That makes it useful when a banner disappears before you can read it, but it is not a permanent archive of everything your apps have ever sent. The log is deliberately limited, and each phone maker can present it differently. A device may rename the setting, move it to another submenu, or expose a different amount of history.

- A recently dismissed notification, if history was already enabled when the alert arrived.
- Recent notification activity that remains inside the phone’s retention window.
- The app associated with an entry; on Google Pixel, tapping an item opens the app it came from.
- The notification information that the originating app placed in the alert, subject to the phone’s privacy and display settings.
What you cannot recover
- An alert received while Notification history was switched off.
- Entries that have aged beyond the device’s short retention period.
- Text or actions that the app never included in its original notification.
- Details hidden by notification privacy settings or other display restrictions.
Think of the feature as a short-term safety net, not a backup service. If an important message, delivery update, security code, or reminder disappears, open the history screen promptly rather than assuming the phone will preserve it indefinitely.
Turn on Notification history before you need it
Activation is the difference between finding a dismissed notification and finding an empty screen. Android starts recording future notifications only after you enable the feature. Turning it on after an alert was dismissed does not reconstruct that earlier event.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification history. If the option is not visible, use Settings search for “notification history.”
- Turn on Use Notification history, or the equivalent switch shown on your phone.
- Leave the setting enabled if you want a continuing short-term record.
Google’s general Android guidance is to open Settings, choose Notifications, and check whether the device offers Notification history. Because menus differ by manufacturer, the exact wording on your phone may not match the Pixel or Samsung labels below.
Find a dismissed notification on Google Pixel
Google Pixel phones expose the clearest version of the feature. Google says that, when Notification history is turned on, the phone keeps a list of notifications dismissed in the last 24 hours.

- Open Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Tap Notification history.
- If the switch is off, enable Use Notification history. Only notifications received after this point can be recorded.
- Return to Settings > Notifications > Notification history after an alert is dismissed.
- Check Recently dismissed first. This section is intended for alerts you recently swiped away.
- Check Last 24 hours for the broader recent log.
- Tap an entry to open the app that generated it.
The two sections answer slightly different questions. Recently dismissed helps when you know you just cleared a banner. Last 24 hours gives a wider view of notifications retained during the day, including alerts that may no longer be visible in the notification shade.
What a Pixel entry can show
A history entry is limited to the content supplied by the original app. If the app used a short title and message, that is what the history can display. If the app omitted details, or the phone hid sensitive text under its privacy settings, Notification history cannot recreate the missing words. Tapping the entry takes you to the source app rather than creating a second copy of the alert.
Find notification history on Samsung Galaxy
On Samsung Galaxy phones, the commonly documented route is different from Pixel’s:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open Advanced settings.
- Tap Notification history.
- Turn on the history switch.
Samsung describes this feature as a way to view recent notifications “exactly as they appeared.” Enable it before relying on the log, because Samsung’s support instructions do not make it a retrospective recovery tool. The cited Samsung guidance does not establish a specific retention duration, so do not assume that Galaxy phones preserve exactly the same window as Pixel phones.

If the Galaxy menu looks different
Galaxy software versions and regional builds can rearrange settings. Start with the Settings search field and enter notification history. If search returns no result, look under Notifications and then Advanced settings. The feature may be unavailable on a particular device or software build; Android’s general guidance is to check whether the phone supports it rather than assuming every model has the same control.
Other Android phones: use the setting search first
Manufacturers can rename or relocate the control, so there is no universal path for every Android skin. The reliable approach is:
- Open Settings.
- Search for notification history.
- Open the matching result and look for a switch such as Use Notification history.
- If search finds nothing, open Notifications and inspect submenus such as Advanced settings.
- Enable the feature and wait for a new notification before testing it.
If the setting is absent, the phone may not implement Android’s Notification history screen, may use a different manufacturer feature, or may be running software in which the option is not exposed. The absence of the menu does not mean a previously dismissed alert can be recovered by another built-in path.
How long does Android keep dismissed notifications?
Retention is short. Google Pixel Help specifies the last 24 hours for dismissed notifications when the feature is turned on. Android Open Source Project documentation likewise describes a history of the last day and only a handful of recently dismissed items.
That wording has two practical implications:
- A Pixel alert can age out once it is more than 24 hours old.
- Even within the day, the recently dismissed area is a limited list rather than an unlimited chronological archive.
The 24-hour guidance is specifically from Google Pixel support. Other manufacturers may implement the same Android capability with different presentation or retention behavior. Samsung’s cited support material confirms access to recent notifications but does not state a duration, so treat the Galaxy log as short-lived and check it as soon as possible.

Device differences at a glance
| Device or platform | Where to look | What the documented view includes | Retention information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel | Settings > Notifications > Notification history | Recently dismissed and Last 24 hours sections; tapping an entry opens its source app | Google says dismissed notifications are kept for the last 24 hours |
| Samsung Galaxy | Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history | Recent notifications shown as they appeared | Samsung’s cited guidance does not state a duration |
| Other supported Android phones | Use Settings search for “notification history”; otherwise inspect Notifications and Advanced settings | Depends on the manufacturer’s Android interface | Check the phone’s own instructions; Android’s platform description refers to a limited recent history |
These paths should not be treated as interchangeable. A Pixel user should expect the two named sections above; a Galaxy user should expect the Advanced settings location; another Android phone may use different labels or provide no screen at all.
Why a dismissed notification may be missing
History was disabled when the alert arrived
This is the most common explanation. The switch controls recording, so enabling it after the fact cannot fill in an earlier gap. Once enabled, generate or wait for a new alert and verify that it appears before relying on the feature.
The entry is older than the retention window
Pixel’s documented window is the last 24 hours, and the platform description calls the log a last-day history. An older alert may have been removed automatically. Check the source app itself for an inbox, message list, order page, or activity screen if you need information outside that window.
The alert was not dismissed in the way you expected
Notification history is a log of notification activity, not a copy of every screen state. A notification may be replaced by a newer alert, grouped with other alerts, snoozed, or removed by the app. The platform description includes snoozed notifications and a limited set of dismissed items, so the entry may appear in a different part of the history screen than you expect.
The app did not include the detail you need
History cannot invent content. An app that only displayed “New activity” cannot provide the underlying message from the history screen. Open the app from the entry, then look for the full conversation or event there.

Privacy settings concealed sensitive text
Notification content can be hidden on the lock screen or in other notification views. History is still constrained by what the phone and app made available. If the entry exists but its message is abbreviated or concealed, use the source app after tapping the item.
The phone does not support the feature
Android’s own guidance tells users to check whether their device has Notification history. If Settings search and the Notifications menus contain no matching option, the feature may not be available on that model or software build.
A practical recovery workflow
Use this sequence when an important alert disappears:
- Open Settings immediately. Search for “notification history” instead of scrolling through every settings page.
- Confirm the switch. If history was off when the alert arrived, the built-in log cannot recover it.
- Check the correct section. On Pixel, start with Recently dismissed, then Last 24 hours. On Galaxy, open the history list under Advanced settings.
- Read the entry and tap it. The app may contain the complete message or a related record that the notification itself did not show.
- Act before the window closes. Save needed information in the app or another approved record rather than expecting Notification history to retain it permanently.
How to test that history is working
A controlled test prevents a false sense of security. After enabling the switch, ask an app that normally sends notifications to produce a new alert or wait for the next routine alert. Dismiss it from the notification shade, then reopen the history screen. On Pixel, look under Recently dismissed and Last 24 hours; on Galaxy, inspect the list reached through Advanced settings.
If the test entry appears, the feature is recording future alerts. If it does not, verify that the app is allowed to send notifications and that you are checking the same user profile and device on which the alert arrived. Do not use a test result to infer a retention period that the manufacturer has not documented.

Privacy and shared-device considerations
Notification history can expose the same information that appeared in your alerts. Anyone who can unlock the phone and open Settings may be able to read recent entries, including names, message previews, or account activity that an app placed in a notification. Review the log with the same care you would give the notification shade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your phone is shared, lent out, or managed by an organization, consider whether keeping a short-term record is appropriate. Notification history is controlled at the device level, so turning it on is a deliberate choice about storing recent alert content locally. The feature does not make an app’s data public, but it can make already-delivered notification text easier to revisit.
When to use the source app instead
Notification history is best for identifying what arrived and getting back to the originating app. It is not a substitute for the app’s own records. Use the source app when you need:
- The complete text behind a truncated notification.
- A conversation, transaction, delivery record, or account event older than the history window.
- Actions that were not included in the original notification.
- A reliable long-term record that can be searched or exported.
On Pixel, tapping a history entry opens the app that generated it. On other phones, the entry may provide a similar route, but the exact interaction depends on the manufacturer’s implementation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Enabling history only after the mistake: this does not restore the already-dismissed alert.
- Assuming “history” means forever: Pixel documents only the last 24 hours, and Android describes a limited recent list.
- Expecting identical menus: Samsung places the control under Advanced settings, while other phones may use another location or label.
- Expecting hidden content to reappear: the log cannot show text the app did not provide or the phone kept private.
- Waiting to check: short retention means a useful entry can disappear before you return to it.
Bottom line for recovering a dismissed Android notification
Enable Settings > Notifications > Notification history now, before an alert vanishes. Pixel users should check Recently dismissed and Last 24 hours; Galaxy users should use Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. The feature only records notifications received after activation, keeps a short and device-dependent history, and can show only the content supplied by the original app. For anything important, open the source app and save the information before the history window expires.
