There is no single Realtek Ethernet driver that fits every computer. Identify the Ethernet controller and your operating system first; on Windows, start with Windows Update or Device Manager, and use a driver from your PC maker or the matching official Realtek family page if needed.
Why isn’t there one Realtek Ethernet driver for every PC?
Realtek publishes separate packages for different controller families, including PCIe, PCI GBE and USB devices. A driver that matches one family may not support another. The right choice depends on the controller model, operating system and, for Windows, system architecture.
Start by identifying the Ethernet adapter in Device Manager and the make and model of the PC. Compare those details with the driver description and supported operating systems on the PC maker’s support page or the appropriate Realtek PCIe controller page or Realtek PCI GBE controller page. The PCI GBE page covers listed devices such as RTL8110S and RTL8169S; it is not interchangeable with the broader PCIe FE/GbE/2.5GbE/5G/10G catalog.
For example, the PCIe catalog checked on October 4, 2026, listed distinct Windows 10/11 NDIS and Windows 11 NetAdapterCx packages, as well as Linux branches for different controllers. Those are catalog examples, not recommendations for every Realtek adapter. Check the live page for current versions and confirm that a package supports your exact device and OS before installing it.

What is the safest way to install a Realtek Ethernet driver in Windows?
Try Windows Update or Device Manager first
Microsoft recommends Windows Update for most hardware driver updates. Windows may already have a compatible driver, so a separate Realtek download is not always necessary.
- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the Realtek Ethernet adapter and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers and follow any prompts.
- If Windows does not find an update, check Windows Update for optional driver updates.

Install a downloaded package manually
Get the driver from your computer manufacturer’s support page when it offers one for your PC model. Otherwise, use the official Realtek page for the controller family you identified. Match the package to your Windows version and architecture; if the download lists multiple package types, do not assume they are interchangeable.
- Download the correct package and extract it if it is compressed.
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Ethernet adapter and select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers, choose the extracted driver folder and continue through the prompts.
Microsoft cautions: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, that is not a reason to force an unrelated package or downgrade.

How can I install the driver if the PC has no internet connection?
Use another computer with internet access to download the driver from the affected PC maker’s support page or the matching official Realtek page. Save it to a USB flash drive, then transfer it to the offline PC. Microsoft outlines this approach in its Ethernet connection troubleshooting guidance.
On the affected computer, copy and extract the package if needed, then follow the manufacturer’s installer instructions or use Device Manager’s manual update flow. Check the computer model and operating system before downloading; an offline install does not change the need to match the driver.

How do I reinstall a driver or undo a problematic update?
Roll back a recent driver update
If the connection stopped working after a driver update, Device Manager may offer a rollback option. Open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if available. Administrator permissions are required, and the option may not appear if Windows has no previous driver to restore. See Microsoft’s driver guidance.
Uninstall and let Windows reinstall
Before removing a working or potentially recoverable driver, download a backup driver from the PC manufacturer. If earlier troubleshooting has not fixed the problem, Microsoft’s recommended reinstall path is:

- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the Ethernet adapter and select Uninstall device.
- Restart the PC. Windows will look for and may reinstall the adapter driver.
- If Windows does not restore a working driver, install the saved backup package.

What should I check if Ethernet still does not work?
- Check the physical connection. Make sure the cable is firmly connected to the PC and the correct LAN port on the router. Try another Ethernet cable if one is available.
- Consider what changed. If the failure began after an update, try the rollback option or reinstall the adapter driver, keeping a backup package ready.
- Use Network reset only as a last resort. It removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets their settings. VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be set up again afterward.
- If the PC has no Ethernet port, Microsoft lists a USB-to-Ethernet adapter as an optional way to try a wired connection. It is not required to install a Realtek driver.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC may still function, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11; check the current Ethernet troubleshooting page for its guidance.
