1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReact Native has no HTML <form> element. Connect each TextInput to a Formik field, display Yup errors when a field is touched, and call Formik’s handleSubmit from a native Button. The pattern below covers native events, validation timing, reusable hooks, asynchronous checks, accessibility, testing considerations, and failure recovery.
The native-to-Formik mental model
A browser form submits through <form onSubmit>. React Native instead exposes native input events. TextInput provides onChangeText for changed text, onBlur when focus leaves the control, and onSubmitEditing when the keyboard submit action is pressed. Formik’s React Native guide wires those events to field names and passes handleSubmit to a native Button.
The essential mapping is:
| Native control concern | Formik connection |
|---|---|
| Displayed text | value={values.email} |
| Text changes | onChangeText={handleChange('email')} |
| Leaving a field | onBlur={handleBlur('email')} |
| Submit button | <Button onPress={handleSubmit} /> |
| Error visibility | Render an error only when errors.field and touched.field are present |
Formik documentation explicitly notes that its handleSubmit is passed to a <Button onPress={...} /> instead of an HTML form because React Native has no <form /> element.
Install and define the form contract
Install Formik and Yup using the package manager and versions compatible with your React Native project. Package versions and compatibility matrices change, so check the current package documentation before pinning versions. The example assumes TypeScript or JavaScript with imports equivalent to:

import React from 'react';
import { Button, StyleSheet, Text, TextInput, View } from 'react-native';
import { Formik } from 'formik';
import * as Yup from 'yup';
Start with an initialValues object that contains every field. The keys become the contract shared by inputs, validation errors, and the submit payload.
const initialValues = {
fullName: '',
email: '',
password: '',
};
Keep validation rules aligned with the product requirement rather than adding arbitrary limits. Yup supports required, minimum, maximum, and email rules, among others:
const validationSchema = Yup.object({
fullName: Yup.string()
.trim()
.required('Enter your full name')
.min(2, 'Use at least 2 characters'),
email: Yup.string()
.trim()
.email('Enter a valid email address')
.required('Enter your email address'),
password: Yup.string()
.min(8, 'Use at least 8 characters')
.max(128, 'Use 128 characters or fewer')
.required('Create a password'),
});
Yup returns an object whose paths match the value keys. Formik places those messages in errors and tracks interaction in touched.
A complete native Formik and Yup implementation
This component uses Formik’s render-prop API, the architecture shown in the official React Native example. It avoids DOM elements and uses only React Native controls.

The createAccount function is intentionally application-specific. Treat server validation as authoritative even when the client schema passes. Never put secrets or authorization tokens in a Yup schema or expose them in a client error message.

Choose when validation runs
Formik validates after change and blur by default. That is not the same as “validate only on submit.” Choose timing based on the field and the cost of the feedback.
Validate on change
Use the default for inexpensive constraints such as a required value or a short length. Immediate feedback can become noisy for an email address or password while the user is still typing. Set validateOnChange={false} on the Formik component when you want to defer those checks.
Validate on blur
Blur validation is a useful compromise: the user finishes a field before seeing its message. Set validateOnBlur={false} if your interaction deliberately avoids blur validation, or call setFieldTouched yourself when a custom control is completed.

Validate on submit
Formik validates the schema when handleSubmit runs. A submit attempt should reveal errors even for untouched fields; otherwise the user may not know why nothing happened. A common policy is quiet fields until blur, then full validation on submit.
Keyboard submission
onSubmitEditing is a native keyboard event, not a replacement for the button. You can move focus to the next input or invoke handleSubmit for the final field:

For intermediate fields, keep a ref to the next input and call focus(); still wire Formik’s change and blur handlers.
Hooks for reusable native fields
Hooks change how you compose the form, not how React Native emits input events. Formik provides useField, useFormik, and useFormikContext.
Recommended Free Tools
A reusable useField component
function FormikTextInput({ name, label, ...props }) {
const [field, meta, helpers] = useField(name);
const showError = Boolean(meta.touched && meta.error);
return (
<View>
<Text>{label}</Text>
<TextInput
{...props}
value={field.value}
onChangeText={field.onChange(name)}
onBlur={field.onBlur(name)}
accessibilityLabel={label}
/>
{showError ? <Text style={styles.error}>{meta.error}</Text> : null}
</View>
);
}
Some custom controls do not emit a plain string. A picker, date selector, or masked input can call helpers.setValue(nextValue) and helpers.setTouched(true) explicitly.
When to use useFormik or context
useFormik gives you the form bag directly when you need to compose a custom container. useFormikContext lets a nested component read values, errors, or submission state without threading props. Keep one source of truth: do not maintain a second local value for the same field unless the component is deliberately staging an edit.
Custom and asynchronous validation
Formik accepts synchronous or asynchronous field-level and form-level validators in addition to Yup. Custom validation is appropriate when a rule depends on several values, a local algorithm, or a remote check.

Debounce remote checks and cancel or ignore stale responses so an earlier request cannot overwrite a newer value. Do not make every keystroke call a paid or rate-limited endpoint. A schema can handle shape and basic constraints while a custom validator handles cross-field or server-dependent rules; choose one clear owner for each message.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Error presentation, accessibility, and resilient submission
- Show a field error when both its message and interaction state exist:
touched.email && errors.email. - Use understandable messages that describe the correction, not an internal rule name.
- Give every input an accessibility label. Mark a visible error or server status with
accessibilityRole="alert"where appropriate. - Disable the submit button while
isSubmittingis true to prevent duplicate requests, but always reset that state in afinallyblock. - Keep server errors separate from field errors when they do not map to a field. Formik’s
setStatusorsetErrorscan represent those cases. - Preserve entered values when a request fails. Reset only after a confirmed success.
For passwords and other sensitive values, avoid logging the Formik values object. Transport and server-side validation still matter even when the client rejects obviously invalid input.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Typing does not update the field | The input is controlled by value but has no matching change handler, or the field name is misspelled. |
Use value={values.name} and onChangeText={handleChange('name')}; verify the key exists in initialValues. |
| Nothing happens when Submit is pressed | The button is not connected to Formik or validation blocked submission. | Pass onPress={handleSubmit}, inspect errors, and reveal submit-time errors for untouched fields. |
| Error appears before the user edits | The UI renders errors.field without checking touched.field, or code marks fields touched on mount. |
Gate display with both values and select a deliberate validation policy. |
| Yup message is missing | The schema path differs from the value key, or a custom validator returns a non-object. | Match names exactly and return an error object such as { email: 'Message' }. |
| Custom picker never validates | It does not emit TextInput’s blur/change events. | Call setValue and setTouched from useField helpers. |
| Duplicate API requests | Users can press repeatedly or an async check is triggered on every keystroke. | Use isSubmitting, debounce remote checks, and ignore stale responses. |
| Keyboard submit behaves differently across fields | onSubmitEditing is being treated as a browser submit event. |
Use it for focus movement or explicitly call handleSubmit on the final field; keep the native Button path. |
Testing and maintenance checklist
- Exercise empty, boundary-length, malformed-email, and valid values on both iOS and Android.
- Check that blur displays the expected message and that submit reveals untouched invalid fields.
- Test slow, rejected, and successful requests; verify the button cannot create duplicate submissions.
- Test keyboard navigation, screen-reader labels, and visible contrast for error text.
- Keep schema messages and server rules synchronized, documenting intentional differences.
- When upgrading React Native, Formik, or Yup, recheck current APIs and peer dependencies rather than assuming this example’s versions remain compatible.
