Buy an RDNA 4 Radeon RX 9000 card if you need a gaming GPU now. As of October 30, 2026, RDNA 4 is AMD’s documented, shipping architecture, with published specifications and gaming products such as the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070. RDNA 5 remains an unknown future option: no official specifications, confirmed model, direct game benchmarks, or firm AMD launch date are established in the available evidence.
That does not prove RDNA 5 will be slower. It means there is no defensible way to claim that it will be faster, more efficient, less expensive, or better at ray tracing. Waiting makes sense only if you can postpone your purchase and accept an uncertain schedule. Everyone else should choose the RDNA 4 card that matches their resolution, budget, and VRAM needs.

What are RDNA 4 and RDNA 5?
RDNA is AMD’s graphics architecture family. An architecture defines the organization of a GPU’s compute units, ray-tracing hardware, AI accelerators, cache, display engine, memory system, and power-management features. A Radeon product is the retail graphics card built from that architecture.
RDNA 4 is a documented shipping generation
AMD identifies RDNA 4 as its latest documented architecture and connects it to the Radeon RX 9000 family. AMD describes a 4nm design with fourth-generation compute units, third-generation ray-tracing accelerators, third-generation Infinity Cache, second-generation AI accelerators, and a second-generation Radiance Display Engine. The architecture uses unified compute units and is described by AMD as improving performance and efficiency per compute unit over RDNA 3.

AMD’s own architecture page summarizes the goal this way: “With the latest AMD RDNA 4 architecture, experience next-generation advancements in performance and efficiency with faster raytracing and AI acceleration.” That is an attributed AMD description, not an independent measurement.
RDNA 5 is not yet documented to the same standard
The available evidence does not establish an RDNA 5 product model, process node, compute-unit count, memory configuration, ray-tracing generation, AI-accelerator generation, board power, or direct game benchmark. A secondary report described add-in-board manufacturers expecting a 2027 or early-2028 timeframe, but that is not an AMD launch announcement and should not be treated as a release date.
Any article promising a specific RDNA 5 performance uplift, process technology, VRAM amount, or launch month is going beyond the established evidence. Those details should be reassessed only after AMD publishes specifications and independent reviewers test retail hardware.
How do RDNA 4 and RDNA 5 compare for gaming?
The fair comparison is asymmetric today: RDNA 4 has measured products and published architectural claims, while RDNA 5 has no confirmed hardware to test. The table below shows what can and cannot be concluded without inventing specifications.
| Gaming factor | RDNA 4 | RDNA 5 | What a buyer can conclude now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rasterized performance | RX 9000 cards provide current, product-level performance data; AMD claims up to 40% higher gaming performance than the previous RDNA 3 generation in its launch material. | No direct game benchmark or confirmed product. | RDNA 4 is the only generation with a known performance baseline. |
| Ray tracing and path tracing | Third-generation ray-tracing accelerators; AMD claims up to 2× ray-tracing throughput versus RDNA 3. | Ray-tracing generation and performance are not established. | Do not call RDNA 5 better or say it fixes a specific RDNA 4 limitation. |
| AI acceleration | Second-generation AI accelerators; AMD claims up to 8× AI performance with sparsity versus the previous generation. | AI hardware and software support are unknown. | RDNA 4 has a documented feature set; RDNA 5 does not. |
| Upscaling and frame generation | Support depends on AMD’s current software stack, game integration, driver, and settings. | Supported technologies and versions are unknown. | Compare identical software versions and image-quality settings after RDNA 5 launches. |
| VRAM and memory behavior | RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 launch specifications list 16GB of GDDR6; the RX 9060 XT is offered with 16GB or 8GB. | Capacity, bus, bandwidth, cache, and compression are unknown. | RDNA 4 capacity can be evaluated against your games; RDNA 5 capacity cannot. |
| Power and cooling | Known card-level figures exist for launch models, including 304W for RX 9070 XT and 220W for RX 9070. | Board power and cooling requirements are unknown. | RDNA 4 lets you plan a case, cooler, and power supply now. |
| Drivers and game support | RX 9000 products are shipping with a current driver ecosystem. | Driver maturity and game support cannot be assessed yet. | Immediate buyers have a substantially lower software risk with RDNA 4. |
AMD’s RDNA 4 claims have boundaries. The architecture comparison reflects information available in December 2024, and the launch figures are AMD performance-lab or architecture comparisons. AMD also notes that benchmark results vary with the test system and configuration. They should not be presented as direct RDNA 4-versus-RDNA 5 results.
Is RDNA 4 fast enough for 1080p, 1440p, and 4K?
RDNA 4 can cover all three resolutions, but the right card depends on refresh rate, ray-tracing use, and texture settings. The architecture alone does not guarantee a frame rate; the individual GPU, game engine, preset, CPU, driver, and upscaling mode determine the result.
1080p
At 1080p, a lower-tier RDNA 4 card can be sensible when the target is a conventional high-refresh display and the games do not require maximum ray tracing. The RX 9060 XT 16GB is the most relevant documented option for a value-oriented 1080p build. An 8GB version exists, but its suitability depends more heavily on the game’s texture requirements and the settings you intend to use.

1440p
1440p is the natural middle ground for the RX 9060 XT 16GB, RX 9070, and RX 9070 XT. The 16GB models give more room for large textures and demanding effects than an 8GB card, although VRAM capacity does not by itself determine performance. If you use a high-refresh monitor, heavy ray tracing, or extensive mods, the RX 9070-class cards provide a stronger starting point than the lower tier.
4K
4K increases the load on shader throughput, memory bandwidth, cache behavior, and ray-tracing hardware. The RX 9070 XT is the clearest current RDNA 4 reference for a higher-resolution build, while the RX 9070 offers a lower-power alternative with the same 16GB memory capacity. The exact settings and use of upscaling still matter; no architecture label can promise a universal 4K frame rate.
What are the current RDNA 4 Radeon options?
AMD’s current catalog lists the RX 9070 XT, RX 9070, RX 9070 GRE, RX 9060 XT, RX 9060, and RX 9050. Only some launch specifications are detailed in the available evidence, so missing values below are deliberately marked as not stated rather than estimated.

AMD announced the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 on February 28, 2025, with partner availability expected from March 6, 2025. Their launch suggested prices are historical reference points, not guaranteed November 2026 street prices. Retail availability and pricing can change by country, board design, and seller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs the RX 9070 XT a good buy now?
The RX 9070 XT is the clearest buy-now RDNA 4 choice when you want a documented high-end Radeon and need the system operating before RDNA 5 is defined. Its 64 compute units, 16GB of GDDR6, and 304W listed total board power make its capability and system-planning requirements concrete.
It is not automatically the best value in every market. The $599 figure was AMD’s February 2025 launch SEP, and a performance-per-dollar judgment requires current retail pricing and independent reviews using the games and settings you care about. Choose it for a higher-resolution or demanding 1440p build, not simply because it has the “XT” name.
When should you choose the RX 9070 instead?
The RX 9070 keeps the 16GB GDDR6 class while reducing the listed compute-unit count to 56 and total board power to 220W. That makes it the more practical option when you value lower specified power, a less demanding cooling setup, or a price below the XT’s launch tier.

Its $549 USD launch SEP is also historical. Compare the actual price difference with independent game results before deciding whether the XT’s additional hardware justifies the premium. Both cards are documented RDNA 4 products, so the decision is about performance, power, and price—not uncertainty about the architecture.

Is the RX 9060 XT 16GB the better value choice?
The RX 9060 XT 16GB is the most defensible lower-cost RDNA 4 recommendation for 1080p or 1440p buyers who want more memory headroom than an 8GB card. AMD’s catalog also lists an 8GB version, so check the exact capacity before purchase.
Sixteen gigabytes is not a guarantee that every future game will run at maximum settings. Texture resolution, ray tracing, shader complexity, the game’s memory management, and your target resolution all matter. Treat the 16GB model as added flexibility, not a promise of a particular lifespan or frame rate.
Should you wait for RDNA 5?
Wait only if postponing the build is acceptable and you are comfortable making a decision later with incomplete timing information. RDNA 5 has no confirmed launch date in the established evidence, so waiting could mean months or longer without a defined product to buy.
Waiting is rational when
- Your current GPU meets your games’ frame-rate and image-quality targets.
- You can tolerate an uncertain schedule and potentially changing product tiers.
- You want to compare official RDNA 5 specifications with independent reviews before committing.
- You are specifically seeking a new feature whose existence or implementation has not been announced for RDNA 4.
Buying RDNA 4 is rational when
- You need a working gaming GPU for a current build or a failed card.
- You value known driver support, published specifications, and products available now.
- Your monitor, games, and budget point clearly to an RX 9060 XT, RX 9070, or RX 9070 XT.
- You would rather avoid paying launch premiums or facing limited availability for an unannounced generation.
Do not buy based on rumored percentages or a rumored 2027 launch. The honest trigger for reconsidering RDNA 5 is an AMD announcement followed by independent testing, not a prediction.

RDNA 4 is the only architecture with a documented ray-tracing design and shipping cards. AMD lists third-generation ray-tracing accelerators and claims up to twice the ray-tracing throughput of RDNA 3. That claim is AMD’s own generational comparison, not a direct comparison with RDNA 5.
RDNA 5 could improve, match, or underperform RDNA 4 in a particular game; the available evidence cannot distinguish those outcomes. For a future comparison, require the same game versions, ray-tracing or path-tracing presets, resolution, upscaling mode, drivers, and CPU platform on both architectures. A headline throughput claim is not a substitute for frame-time and image-quality results.

What about upscaling, frame generation, and image quality?
These features can change the practical gaming experience as much as raw shader speed. Their results depend on the game integration, driver, software version, preset, input latency behavior, and the base render resolution.
RDNA 4 has a current software ecosystem that can be checked game by game. RDNA 5’s supported technologies and software versions are not established. When RDNA 5 hardware appears, compare native rendering, upscaled output, and frame-generation modes separately; otherwise a larger displayed frame rate may conceal lower base performance, artifacts, or different latency.

Does RDNA 4 have enough VRAM for future games?
There is no universal “future-proof” VRAM amount. The RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 launch specifications provide 16GB of GDDR6, while the RX 9060 XT comes in 16GB and 8GB versions. That gives buyers a concrete capacity choice, but the right amount depends on resolution, texture quality, ray tracing, mods, and how long they intend to keep the card.
For a 1440p or 4K system, 16GB offers more tolerance for texture-heavy workloads than 8GB, but it does not compensate for insufficient compute performance. For a 1080p system with moderate settings, 8GB may fit the target. Check independent reviews of the games you actually play rather than treating capacity as a standalone speed rating.
How should you choose an RDNA 4 card today?
Use this sequence to turn the architecture decision into a product decision.
- Set the display target. Write down the resolution, refresh rate, and whether you require maximum ray tracing or path tracing. A 1080p/60 target and a 4K/144 target are different buying problems.
- Set the memory floor. Prefer the 16GB models when your games use large textures, you run 1440p or 4K, or you plan to keep the card for several years. Consider 8GB only when the intended settings and games justify it.
- Check system power and cooling. Use the exact board partner specification. AMD’s launch figures list 304W for the RX 9070 XT and 220W for the RX 9070; a complete system also includes the CPU, drives, fans, transient behavior, and the card’s connector requirements.
- Compare current street prices. Do not assume the 2025 launch SEP remains the market price in November 2026. Compare cards at the same retailer and region, including warranty and return terms.
- Read like-for-like reviews. Favor reviews that disclose game versions, presets, resolutions, ray-tracing settings, drivers, CPU, and frame-time data. Separate vendor claims from independent measurements.
- Decide whether waiting has a defined benefit. If no official RDNA 5 specification or launch plan exists, the benefit of waiting is optionality, not a known performance gain.
What evidence should you demand before buying RDNA 5?
A responsible RDNA 5 decision needs more than a leaked slide or a percentage attached to an unnamed GPU. Look for all of the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- An AMD announcement identifying the architecture and retail product names.
- Official compute-unit, memory, cache, display, ray-tracing, AI, and board-power specifications.
- Confirmed availability and region-specific pricing.
- Public driver support and a list of relevant game technologies.
- Independent tests using the same games, presets, resolutions, drivers, and CPU platform as RDNA 4 comparisons.
- Separate raster, ray-tracing, upscaling, frame-generation, power, noise, and frame-time results.
Until those conditions exist, RDNA 5 is a waiting decision rather than a product recommendation.

Common mistakes in the RDNA 5 versus RDNA 4 debate
- Turning a rumor into a specification: an expected launch window is not an AMD release date, and an alleged process node is not a confirmed design.
- Comparing unlike numbers: AMD’s “up to” generational claims cannot be compared directly with an independent benchmark from a different game, preset, or driver.
- Ignoring the card model: RDNA 4 performance varies substantially between an RX 9060 XT and RX 9070 XT. Architecture names do not replace product specifications.
- Treating VRAM as a frame-rate guarantee: capacity can prevent a memory limit, but it does not create shader throughput or ray-tracing performance.
- Using launch SEP as a current price: the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 prices were February 2025 launch figures, not guaranteed November 2026 retail prices.
- Waiting without a fallback: if your current card fails or cannot meet your display target, an available RDNA 4 model solves a real problem that an unannounced RDNA 5 card cannot.
Bottom line: which architecture is better for gaming?
RDNA 4 is the better-supported gaming choice today because it is documented, shipping, and represented by Radeon RX 9000 cards with known specifications. Choose the RX 9070 XT for a higher-performance 16GB option, the RX 9070 for a lower listed power tier with 16GB, or the RX 9060 XT 16GB for a value-oriented 1080p/1440p build, subject to current pricing and independent reviews.
RDNA 5 may ultimately be a major upgrade, but that outcome is not established. Wait only when you can tolerate an uncertain schedule and are prepared to reassess after AMD publishes specifications and independent gaming results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can RDNA 5 games run on an RDNA 4 card?
Game compatibility is normally determined by the game engine, API, driver, and required features rather than the generation name alone. Because RDNA 5 features and software requirements have not been announced, no blanket compatibility promise can be made for future games.
Recommended Free Tools
Will a 16GB RDNA 4 card avoid stutter in every new game?
No. VRAM capacity is only one possible limit; shader load, CPU performance, streaming behavior, driver issues, and game optimization can still cause stutter. Sixteen gigabytes gives more memory headroom than 8GB, not a guaranteed result.
What power supply should an RX 9070 XT use?
The launch specification lists 304W total board power, but a complete power-supply recommendation depends on the exact board design, CPU, connectors, and the rest of the system. Use the specific card manufacturer’s requirement rather than choosing from the architecture name alone.
How long should I wait after an RDNA 5 launch before buying?
Wait until retail cards, public drivers, regional prices, and independent reviews are available. Early announcements can omit board variants, firmware changes, game support limitations, and real power behavior that affect the buying decision.
