Ratata is actually titled Ratatan. It does not support local co-op for multiple people on one console or PC, so four controllers cannot create a same-system party. The supported group mode is online co-op for up to four players. Offline play is single-player, and the publisher says the game’s content can be played solo without an internet connection.
To play with friends, each person needs Ratatan on a supported platform, an up-to-date installation and an internet connection. One player creates a room and shares its code; the others use friend matchmaking to enter that code. Same-platform groups are the safest choice because official statements about live cross-play are conflicting as of November 2026.

Ratatan’s publisher documents the four-player online limit and explicitly excludes local co-op in its FAQ and announcements. Read the publisher’s multiplayer FAQ and notices.
Does Ratatan support local co-op for multiple players on one system?
No. Ratatan has no couch or split-screen mode for multiple people sharing one console or PC. The publisher’s FAQ says local co-op is not supported, while offline play is single-player.

This means buying extra gamepads, connecting four controllers, or putting the console in offline mode will not reveal a hidden local option. There is also no documented workaround involving a cartridge, a second display or a controller adapter. If everyone is in the same room, each person still needs to join an online session from their own supported system and copy of the game.
The distinction matters because “four-player co-op” describes the online player cap, not four players on one machine. A household that wants to play together must plan for separate devices, internet access and any required console online memberships.
What do four players need before starting online co-op?
Prepare the following before anyone creates a room:
- One supported system per player: Steam on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 or Xbox Series X|S. The original Nintendo Switch edition is still in preparation; do not assume a Switch 2 release also runs on the first-generation Switch. The publisher lists the supported platforms and Switch status.
- One Ratatan copy per player. A physical or digital purchase is tied to the platform and account using it. A packaged Switch 2 edition contains game data on a cartridge, according to the publisher; it is not a local multiplayer unlock.
- Internet access and matching versions. Update every installation before trying to join. The publisher warns that players on different game versions may be unable to match.
- The appropriate online membership on consoles. Switch 2 requires Nintendo Switch Online; PS5 requires PlayStation Plus; Xbox Series X|S requires Xbox Game Pass with console online multiplayer. The US Xbox listing identifies Essential, Premium or Ultimate tiers for online multiplayer. Steam online co-op requires internet access but no console membership.
- A host and a private way to share the room code. The code lets invited friends find the intended room without relying on a public matchmaking search.

Membership names and requirements can change by region. Confirm the account’s local console-store terms before purchasing a subscription.
How can I play Ratatan with friends online?
The publisher’s documented process is room-code matchmaking, with direct platform invitations also listed for Steam, PS5 and Xbox. Menu wording can vary by language and update, so use the game’s multiplayer area and look specifically for the friend-matchmaking option rather than assuming an undocumented button name.
- Install Ratatan on every system. Check that each player is using Steam PC, PS5, Switch 2 or Xbox Series X|S. An original Switch is not currently a supported substitute.
- Bring every copy to the same game version. Run the platform’s update process on all four systems. Restart the game after an update if the platform indicates that a relaunch is required.
- Connect to the internet and verify memberships. Steam players need a working broadband connection. Console players should sign in to the account that owns the required Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or qualifying Xbox Game Pass access.
- Choose one host. Have that player create a multiplayer room. Ratatan supports a maximum of four online players, so the host plus three friends fills the party.
- Share the room code privately. Send the code to the intended players. The publisher does not specify a universal code length, so do not add spaces, punctuation or a guessed prefix unless the game displays them.
- Have each friend open the multiplayer area. Select friend matchmaking and enter the host’s shared code. If the platform offers a direct invitation, the host can use that route instead; the publisher specifically lists invitations on Steam, PS5 and Xbox.
- Confirm the roster before launching. Make sure every expected name appears in the room and that nobody is still on a different version. If a fourth player cannot enter, stop and correct the version, code or membership issue before repeatedly recreating rooms.
- Start the session from the room. Welcome Mode is disabled during co-op, so any player who relies on that mode should expect the standard multiplayer experience.
The publisher does not publish one guaranteed sequence of English menu labels for every platform. If your screen uses different wording, stay within the multiplayer and friend-matchmaking functions rather than treating a missing label as evidence that online co-op is unavailable.
Can Ratatan players on different platforms play together?
Do not promise a mixed-platform party yet. Official statements dated October 13 and October 16, 2026 conflict. The October 13 FAQ says cross-play among Steam, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S is supported and that PS5 support is planned. In the October 16 notice, the development team says it is still working on cross-play among Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, subject to platform approval, without committing to a launch date.

The later notice is the safer planning reference. The team wrote: “Crossplay requires platform approval, so we cannot commit to a launch date at this time.” Neither the older FAQ nor the Xbox store’s generic cross-platform capability tag establishes that a specific pair works at the moment you try it.
For a reliable session, put all players on the same platform family where possible. If your group must mix platforms, treat the pairing as unverified: check the latest publisher announcement, update every copy and test the connection before buying additional copies solely for cross-play. A failed mixed-platform connection does not prove that every cross-play combination is permanently impossible; it may reflect an approval, rollout or version difference.
What should I do if a friend cannot join or keeps disconnecting?
Start with the simple checks in the order below. They address the causes the publisher and platform requirements identify, without assuming that a router purchase or security change will solve every failure.
- Re-enter the room code. Ask the host to display or resend the current code and have the friend enter it through friend matchmaking. Confirm that the friend is joining the host’s newly created room, not an expired or old room.
- Compare installed versions. Check for pending updates on every system. Different versions can prevent matching, even when everyone owns the correct platform edition.
- Check the console membership. Verify that the signed-in account has Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or qualifying Xbox Game Pass console multiplayer access. Steam players do not need a console membership, but still need internet access.
- Review the network path. Steam’s published PC requirements call for broadband and non-symmetric NAT, such as open or moderate NAT, for online co-op. If NAT is restricted, investigate the router or ISP configuration with its documentation or support service. Do not assume that changing NAT, disabling security controls or buying networking hardware is a guaranteed fix.
- Try a same-platform host. If the party is mixed-platform, repeat the test with players on one platform family. This separates a cross-play availability issue from a general connection problem.
- Record the failure details. Note each platform, installed game version, whether the problem was joining or a later disconnect, and what the party was doing when it occurred. The development team has acknowledged connection failures, disconnections and in-game multiplayer problems under investigation; those details make a support report more useful. Check the team’s current multiplayer notices.
If a room works for some friends but not another, do not immediately recreate the entire party. Keep the working group intact, then compare the absent player’s version, membership, platform and network conditions one at a time.

Each participant’s own save records their multiplayer progress, but save data cannot be shared between platforms. A player moving from Steam to PS5, for example, should not expect the progress made on one platform to appear automatically on the other.
This is separate from cross-play. Even if a mixed-platform session becomes available, it does not imply cross-platform save transfer. Keep using the platform and account where the desired save is stored, and avoid treating another platform’s copy as a backup unless the publisher later documents a transfer system.
What does the setup cost in practical terms?
There is no single four-player purchase. Because local co-op is absent, a full party needs four supported systems and four player-accessible copies of Ratatan. Console groups also need the applicable online memberships. Steam players avoid a console subscription, but still need a compatible PC and broadband internet.

That makes the least expensive arrangement dependent on what your group already owns. Four friends who already have Steam PCs only need their game copies and internet access. A console group must also account for Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass access. A mixed-platform group should not buy a second copy solely on the assumption that cross-play will work; the October 2026 statements do not establish a definitive pairing matrix.

Same room, separate systems: the practical arrangement
People sitting together can still play online, but each person should prepare as though they were remote. Put every system on the internet, sign in to the correct account, install the same version and confirm any membership before opening the room. One player shares the code privately while the other three use friend matchmaking.
Do not interpret being on the same Wi-Fi network as local multiplayer. The game still treats the session as online co-op, and a network outage affects the party even when everyone is in the same house. Likewise, an extra controller connected to the host’s console remains unused for a second local player.
What changes when the party has fewer than four people?
The four-player figure is a maximum, not a requirement. A host can arrange an online session for two or three participants using the same room-code process. If one friend drops out, the remaining players do not need to fill the fourth slot. The important limits are that every participant uses a supported system, matching game versions and the relevant online access.

Xbox’s store listing describes online co-op for two to four players, which matches the publisher’s four-player ceiling. It does not establish couch co-op or guarantee unrestricted connections to every other platform.
Release and support context
Ratatan’s full release was announced for October 14, 2026. Multiplayer guidance can change through patches, platform approvals and membership-policy updates, so check the publisher’s latest notice when planning a new group. In particular, verify cross-play status rather than relying on an old store label or a remembered menu layout.

If you contact support about a failed session, include the platform for each player, the installed game version, whether the failure occurred while joining or after play began, and what the group was doing when the disconnect happened. The development team has acknowledged connection failures, disconnections and in-game multiplayer problems under investigation; a precise report is more useful than simply saying that co-op is broken.

Choose offline solo if one person wants to play without internet or without paying for a console online membership. Choose online co-op if two to four people each have a supported system and can meet the platform and network requirements. Choose neither “local co-op” nor an extra-controller purchase as a solution: that mode is not part of Ratatan’s supported feature set.
- Same room, separate devices: create one online room and share the code; everyone still needs their own system and copy.
- Friends on one platform: this is the least ambiguous arrangement and avoids the current cross-play uncertainty.
- Friends on different platforms: verify the live pairing first, because the October 2026 statements do not provide a definitive working matrix.

Do all four Ratatan players need to buy the game separately?
Yes. The online arrangement is one player per supported system, so each participant needs access to Ratatan on that platform. Sharing a cartridge or account does not turn the game into a four-person local session.
Can I host Ratatan online without a paid console subscription?
Steam online play requires internet access but no console membership. On consoles, the listed online-membership requirements still apply even when you are the room creator rather than a joining player.
Does Welcome Mode work when playing with friends?

Can two or three people play online, or must the room have four?
Two to four players are supported online. Four is the maximum, not a required party size, so a smaller group can use the same room-code process.
Can four people in the same house use one Ratatan copy?
No. Being on the same Wi-Fi network does not create local co-op. Each participant needs a supported system and access to the game, and the session still uses online multiplayer.
Does the original Nintendo Switch run the Switch 2 edition?
Do not assume so. The publisher lists Nintendo Switch 2 as supported and says the original Nintendo Switch edition is still in preparation.

It is not safe to promise a particular mixed-platform pairing. An October 13 FAQ and an October 16 developer notice give conflicting status, with the later notice saying platform approval is still required. Same-platform play is the reliable plan; test any mixed group before buying another copy.
Does the Xbox cross-platform label prove that Xbox can connect to every other platform?
No. The store label is not a definitive pairing matrix. Confirm the latest publisher notice and test the intended connection.
What should I send support when multiplayer fails?
