For one H.264 YouTube Live stream, plan for at least 6.25 Mbps of sustained upload for 1080p30 or 17.5 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are calculated planning floors: YouTube recommends encoder bitrates of 5 Mbps and 14 Mbps respectively and advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. Add more capacity if other devices are uploading or the connection fluctuates. These are upload-speed targets, not download speeds or broadband plan labels.
Recommended upload capacity by resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s recommendations below are for H.264 encoder bitrate. The upload figures are calculated by dividing the stream bitrate by 0.8 to leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends; they are not separate minimums published by YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s network guidance.

The 20% allowance is a baseline, not a guarantee against congestion or brief drops. Leave extra upload capacity when household devices are on video calls, sending files, backing up photos, or streaming another broadcast. YouTube warns that network interruptions can break a live stream.
Is 10 Mbps upload enough for 1080p?
For a single H.264 1080p30 stream, a stable 10 Mbps upload exceeds the calculated 6.25 Mbps planning floor. For 1080p60, it falls short of the 17.5 Mbps planning floor. This assumes the measured speed is sustained at the Pi, not merely a headline plan speed or a brief test peak. If your connection varies, use a lower frame rate or resolution, reduce competing uploads, or choose a connection with more headroom.

Check the upload speed your Indian broadband plan actually provides
A plan advertised as “100 Mbps” does not establish that the upstream rate is 100 Mbps. TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed; providers are to state typical upload and download speeds in tariff offerings. TRAI also says 90% of measured test samples must be at least the provider-declared typical speed. Check your provider’s stated typical upload speed and confirm local availability rather than inferring upload from the plan’s headline number. See TRAI’s Broadband FAQ.
Airtel lists headline broadband tiers including 40 Mbps and 100 Mbps, while Jio’s Chennai page lists 30, 100, 150, and 300 Mbps tiers. These are examples of marketed tiers, not evidence of the upstream rate available to a particular customer. Local plans and availability vary; check the provider’s current city-specific disclosure. Measure the connection where the Raspberry Pi will stream
- Check your broadband provider’s declared typical upload speed for your address and plan.
- At the location and time you intend to stream, measure upload speed on the same network the Pi will use. Repeat the measurement at different times if usage or congestion varies.
- Compare the sustained result with the planning floor for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Leave further margin for other devices and fluctuations.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream using representative movement and audio. Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test; a speed test alone cannot establish that an entire broadcast will remain stable.
Use wired Ethernet when practical as a setup choice. Wi-Fi may work, but the available guidance does not establish a numeric speed improvement from switching to Ethernet. If Wi-Fi is necessary, measure it at the Pi’s location rather than beside the router.
Confirm the Pi can encode the stream you want
A fast broadband connection does not mean every Raspberry Pi can encode every resolution and frame rate. Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual describes H264Encoder as using the board’s built-in hardware through V4L2 and documents support up to 1080p30. Raspberry Pi separately documents Pi 5 software-encoding configurations and compares them with the Pi 4 hardware encoder. Capabilities therefore depend on the Pi generation and capture/encoding software. Identify your board and test the intended format rather than assuming a 1080p60 workload will work on every Pi.

Troubleshoot drops, buffering, or poor stream health
