Yes, Raspberry Pi 5 is a substantial upgrade over Raspberry Pi 4, but “2–3 times faster” is not a guarantee for every task. Raspberry Pi Ltd describes the new board as delivering two to three times the CPU and GPU performance and roughly twice the memory and I/O bandwidth. In the company’s Geekbench 6.2 tests, Pi 5 scored 2.4 times higher in single-core performance and 2.2 times higher in multi-core performance. Your actual speedup depends on the application and setup.

What does “2–3 times more powerful” mean?

It is Raspberry Pi Ltd’s broad comparison of CPU and GPU performance, not a promise that every program will finish in one-third the time. Software that can use multiple CPU cores or benefits from the newer graphics hardware may gain substantially; other workloads may see a smaller improvement because performance also depends on memory use, storage, cooling, and software.

The company’s Geekbench 6.2 results provide a concrete comparison. These are Raspberry Pi Ltd’s own measurements, not independent results or universal application benchmarks.

Geekbench 6.2 test Raspberry Pi 4 Raspberry Pi 5 Difference
Single-core 340 764 2.4×
Multi-core 723 1,604 2.2×

Those scores support the headline for CPU performance in that test. They should not be read as a prediction that a particular game, browser task, or project will run at exactly those ratios.

How do Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi 4 differ?

Pi 5 changes the processor, graphics, I/O architecture, and several practical board features. Raspberry Pi Ltd says the newer design offers roughly twice the memory and I/O bandwidth. The comparison below focuses on the differences established in the current specifications and launch performance figures.

Area Raspberry Pi 4 Raspberry Pi 5
CPU Quad-core Cortex-A72; the Pi 4 result in Raspberry Pi Ltd’s Geekbench 6.2 test was 340 single-core and 723 multi-core. 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 BCM2712, built on a 16nm process, with 512KB L2 cache per core and 2MB shared L3.
Graphics and display Previous-generation VideoCore graphics and dual-display support. 800MHz VideoCore VII with OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.3 support; dual 4Kp60 display output.
I/O controller Previous-generation board I/O. In-house RP1 controller handles USB, Ethernet, MIPI, GPIO, and low-speed interfaces.
USB and storage USB 3 and USB 2 ports; microSD storage. Two USB 3 ports and two USB 2 ports, improved USB bandwidth, SDR104 microSD support, and PCIe 2.0 x1 for an adapter-based storage expansion.
Wireless and networking Gigabit Ethernet and wireless networking. Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0/BLE.
Board features No onboard power button or real-time clock. Adds a power button and real-time clock.
Memory choices Model options differ from Pi 5’s current published range. Current product page lists 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB LPDDR4X-4267 versions.

Pi 5 also has two four-lane MIPI camera/display transceivers. This and the RP1 controller contribute to its broader I/O changes, rather than making the processor benchmark scores the only measure of the upgrade.

Does Raspberry Pi 5 need a new power supply or cooler?

Raspberry Pi Ltd recommends a high-quality 5V 5A USB-C power supply for Pi 5. The board can run with other compatible supplies, but a supply that cannot provide enough power may constrain attached peripherals or overall operation. If you are upgrading from a Pi 4 setup, check the supply’s rating rather than assuming it is suitable.

Cooling matters most when you want sustained performance. Raspberry Pi Ltd says Pi 5 performs best with active cooling. A fan-equipped case or the Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler can help keep the board cool under sustained load; passive operation may be adequate for lighter or intermittent use, but should not be expected to hold the same performance in all conditions.

Pi 5 will not fit the Raspberry Pi 4 Case, so plan for a Pi 5-compatible enclosure if you need one. Include the case, cooler, power supply, and any storage adapter in the total cost of an upgrade; board-only comparisons omit those system expenses.

Can Raspberry Pi 5 use an NVMe SSD?

Yes. Pi 5 exposes PCIe 2.0 x1, but an NVMe drive does not connect directly to the board: you need an M.2 HAT or another PCIe adapter that connects to the Pi 5’s PCIe interface. Check that the adapter is designed for Raspberry Pi 5 and that the drive and enclosure fit your intended setup.

Which Raspberry Pi 5 memory size should you choose?

The current Raspberry Pi product page lists 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB LPDDR4X-4267 variants. Choose based on the applications and operating system workload you expect to run: more memory can help with multitasking and memory-heavy software, but it does not by itself make every task faster. Availability and pricing vary by region and retailer, so confirm both before buying.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

Is Raspberry Pi 5 a worthwhile upgrade?

Pi 5 is a compelling upgrade if you need more CPU or graphics performance, faster I/O, dual 4Kp60 output, or PCIe-based storage expansion. Its benchmark advantage is substantial in Raspberry Pi Ltd’s Geekbench 6.2 results, and its added power button and real-time clock improve the board’s capabilities.

For a simple project that already runs well on Pi 4, the practical gain may not justify replacing the board and accessories. Consider the workload, the memory option you need, and the added cost of a compatible supply, cooling, case, or NVMe adapter. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s current product page states a production commitment through at least January 2036.
