Raspberry Pi announced a 3GB Raspberry Pi 4 Model B on 1 April 2026, adding a memory option between the 2GB and 4GB versions. The company said LPDDR4 memory costs had risen sharply and that offering more RAM configurations could help customers avoid paying for memory their projects do not need. The 3GB board’s announced price was $83.75 at launch; that is a dated announcement, not a verified current shelf price.

What is the Raspberry Pi 4 3GB model?

It is a new RAM configuration of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, not a different-generation board. Raspberry Pi announced it on 1 April 2026 and said it could be ordered through Raspberry Pi Approved Resellers worldwide. The launch fell on April Fools’ Day, but CEO Eben Upton explicitly confirmed the product was real.

The Pi 4 platform is a compact single-board computer aimed at projects such as desktop computing, robotics, smart-home control, media centres, and factory control, according to Raspberry Pi’s product page. The vendor describes the platform as having Gigabit Ethernet, onboard wireless networking and Bluetooth, USB 3, and support for two 4K displays. Those are platform capabilities, not results of a separate test of the 3GB configuration.

The Pi 4 Model B originally launched in June 2019 with 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB variants. Its launch announcement listed a 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A72 processor, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, dual displays up to 4K, and hardware HEVC decoding up to 4Kp60. The launch prices—$35 for 1GB, $45 for 2GB, and $55 for 4GB—are historical, not current prices.

How much does the 3GB Raspberry Pi 4 cost?

Raspberry Pi announced the 3GB model at $83.75 on 1 April 2026. A later company notice dated 1 October 2026 raised the 2GB Pi 4 price by $12.50, to an announced $67.50, while saying the 1GB price remained unchanged. That October notice does not give an updated 3GB price.

Do not treat the April 3GB figure as a confirmed current retail price. Raspberry Pi’s product page asks buyers to select a model and region to find local resellers, and seller prices and stock can vary. Check a local approved reseller for the current price before choosing a configuration.

  • 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
  • Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)

Why did Raspberry Pi add a 3GB model?

Raspberry Pi said on 1 April 2026 that the price of LPDDR4 DRAM used in Pi 4 and Pi 5 had increased seven-fold over the preceding year. That is the company’s characterization of its own memory costs, not an independent market measurement. Raspberry Pi had also cited competition for memory-fabrication capacity from AI infrastructure when discussing cost pressure in February 2026; the reviewed company statements do not independently establish how much AI demand caused the increase.

The 3GB tier gives buyers another way to match memory to a project rather than automatically moving from 2GB to 4GB. Upton described that goal in the April announcement: “we want to make sure you don’t pay for more memory than you need.” The company simultaneously announced increases of $25 for 4GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 variants and $50 for 8GB variants in that same April notice. Those were announced increases, not a universal comparison of retail prices across regions.

Is the 3GB model still cheaper than the 4GB model?

The available dated announcements do not establish a current, like-for-like 3GB-versus-4GB retail-price comparison. Raspberry Pi announced the 3GB board at $83.75 on 1 April 2026, but did not refresh that figure in its 1 October price notice. The April notice announced increases for 4GB configurations without supplying a verified current regional shelf price. Compare live prices at approved resellers in your region rather than assuming the 3GB model is cheaper.

For a practical choice, consider the memory your workload actually uses, the current local price of each configuration, the Pi platform features your project needs, and any peripherals you must purchase separately. A 3GB option may be useful when 2GB is too limiting but a larger-memory configuration is unnecessary; the right choice depends on the software and tasks you plan to run.

What do I need to set up a Raspberry Pi 4?

Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance calls for a 15W USB-C power supply, a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS installed, a keyboard and mouse, and cable or cables for displays connected through the Pi 4’s micro-HDMI ports. The company recommends its official power supply. A Pi 4 case and micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable are listed as add-ons; do not assume these items are included with a bare board.

  1. Prepare the operating system: use a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS installed.
  2. Connect power: use a 15W USB-C supply; Raspberry Pi recommends its official supply.
  3. Connect a display: use the Pi 4’s micro-HDMI port or ports and a suitable display cable.
  4. Attach input devices: connect a keyboard and mouse to complete initial setup.

Where should you buy one?

Raspberry Pi recommends buying through its Approved Reseller network. The company describes these hand-picked resellers as operating in more than 60 countries and offering local support. Its October 2026 price notice warns that unauthorised sellers may advertise inflated prices or products that are not what they appear to be. These recommendations do not guarantee a particular model is in stock or available at a specific price; verify both with the seller.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
  • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
  • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
  • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
  • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
  • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
