Short answer: A USB SSD can be a sensible boot drive for a Raspberry Pi running a 24/7 YouTube stream, especially if your setup writes frequently, but the available official guidance does not establish that SSDs are universally more reliable or last longer than microSD cards for this workload. Choose based on your exact Pi model, drive and adapter compatibility, power needs, write activity, and recovery plan. Neither storage choice can prevent stream failures caused by network, power, or encoder problems.

SD card vs. USB SSD for Raspberry Pi 24/7 streaming

Factor microSD card USB SSD
Boot support Common Raspberry Pi boot media; confirm setup requirements for your model. Supported on some newer models; check model-specific USB mass-storage boot support and configuration.
Reliability evidence for this workload No reviewed official source establishes a lifespan for continuous YouTube encoding. No reviewed official source establishes a lifespan or proves a reliability advantage over microSD for continuous YouTube encoding.
Performance evidence Raspberry Pi publishes specifications for its own microSD cards; these are not a general comparison against SSDs. Faster storage may improve performance, but results depend on the drive, USB bridge, Pi, and setup.
Compatibility and power Use a quality card appropriate to the Pi and workload. Check SSD, enclosure or adapter, Linux behavior, and power requirements on the target Pi; some combinations may need a powered hub or enclosure.
Recovery Keep a restorable image so you can replace and rebuild the boot media. Keep a restorable image and test that the Pi can boot reliably from the specific drive and adapter.

For continuous use, the key distinction is not simply “SD versus SSD.” It is whether the chosen device works reliably in your exact Pi, with its power supply and software, and whether you can restore it if it fails. The official Raspberry Pi documentation says faster storage can improve overall performance, but that does not establish longer service life. Raspberry Pi’s published microSD figures are card-specific performance measurements, not endurance tests or a head-to-head SSD comparison.

Can a Raspberry Pi run from a USB SSD?

Some newer Raspberry Pi models support booting from USB mass storage. Support, boot order, and any required configuration vary by model, so check the official USB mass-storage boot documentation before buying. Older models can have device-specific USB boot issues.

USB boot reliability also depends on the SSD and its connection. Raspberry Pi recommends checking that a device works correctly under Linux and notes a possible UAS issue with some USB-SATA adapters. Test the complete combination—Pi, drive, enclosure or adapter, and power supply—rather than assuming that any USB SSD will work. A drive or enclosure with higher power needs may require a powered hub or separate powered enclosure.

What the published storage numbers do—and do not—tell you

Raspberry Pi lists its own microSD cards as C10, U3, V30, and A2. For 4 kB random data, it lists 3,200 read IOPS and 1,200 write IOPS on Pi 4, and 5,000 read IOPS and 2,000 write IOPS on Pi 5. These are figures for Raspberry Pi’s specified cards and platforms, not endurance ratings and not a comparison with USB SSDs. See the Raspberry Pi SD Cards documentation.

The reviewed official documentation does not give an apples-to-apples endurance figure, mean time to failure, or lifespan estimate for either media type under a 24/7 YouTube encoder workload. Avoid treating a general rule about flash storage as a prediction for your specific card, SSD, or workload.

Choose based on your Pi and actual workload

Check the exact Pi model and boot path

Confirm that your model supports USB mass-storage boot and whether its boot order or EEPROM settings need adjustment. If you choose USB, verify that the specific adapter and drive work with Linux on that Pi. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started and boot-media guidance explains storage setup and imaging.

Account for writes in your configuration

Consider what your system actually writes: logs, caches, swap, recordings, or other files. The available sources do not quantify how any particular write pattern affects lifespan for this streaming workload. Reducing unnecessary writes is prudent, but it is not a quantified lifespan guarantee.

Compare particular devices, capacity, and cost

Compare the price and capacity of the actual card or SSD you are considering, including an enclosure or adapter and any power accessories. There is no universal cost or recovery-time comparison in the cited documentation. Keep an image of the working boot media and know how to restore it before relying on the Pi unattended.

Do not use a read-only overlay without checking your workflow

Raspberry Pi documents that overlay-file-system changes outside the boot partition are temporary and lost at shutdown or reboot. An overlay can therefore be unsuitable if your streaming workflow needs persistent changes or files. Confirm what your configuration writes before enabling one; see the Raspberry Pi overlay file-system documentation.

Configure and test the YouTube stream independently of storage

Storage is only one part of a 24/7 setup. YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its guidance lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Recommendations can change, so check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and test the configuration before starting a sustained stream.

  1. Set encoder output to match the intended stream. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance. Confirm that the Pi can encode that format without overloading.
  2. Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Its streaming guidance warns that total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Check the connection under realistic conditions, not just its advertised peak, and consult YouTube’s streaming tips.
  3. Run a test and inspect stream health. Use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before depending on the stream. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live in its encoder guidance.
  4. Check the rest of the system. Make sure power is stable, the Pi stays within its operating limits, and your encoder and streaming software remain responsive. A healthy boot drive cannot compensate for power loss, network outages, overheating, or software crashes.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving statement, not an endorsement or technical guarantee that a stream can run continuously beyond that duration. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, a Raspberry Pi is not the only option. StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and the stream can continue with your computer off. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera.
