Metro 2033 Redux has two separate Ranger-related Steam achievements. Ranger requires finding every Ranger stash in the Dead City level, while If it’s hostile, you kill it. is the achievement whose wording requires you to “Become a true ranger.” They are different objectives, and completing one does not automatically satisfy the other. This guide covers both, plus the Survival and Spartan mode requirements and the chapter-specific achievements most likely to conflict with one another.
What are the two Ranger achievements?
Ranger is a collectible objective: Steam describes it as “Find all Ranger stashes in Dead City.” The stashes are confined to that chapter, so use a written checklist and mark each location as you search.

If it’s hostile, you kill it. has the Steam description “Become a true ranger.” Steam does not publish a longer trigger explanation. The route below is therefore practical guidance rather than a claim about an undocumented hidden condition: complete the campaign while consistently playing as a Ranger, prioritising combat competence, resource management and the mode requirements you selected.
Does Ranger Mode remove the HUD and UI?
Yes. Deep Silver describes Ranger Mode as having “No HUD, no UI, deadlier combat and limited resources.” You cannot rely on interface markers for ammunition, filters or navigation, so prepare routes before launching a chapter and use sound, lighting, enemy calls and environmental landmarks to orient yourself.

- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create one epic adventure. With 10 hours of bonus content, that means 30+ hours of solo FPS gameplay just on one play-through
- Two unique Play Styles : 'Spartan' and 'Survival' - approach the campaign as a slow burn Survival Horror , or tackle it with the combat skills of a Spartan Ranger in these two unique modes
- Learn the chapter route on a lower difficulty before attempting a no-HUD run.
- Conserve ammunition and filters; avoid firing when a stealth takedown is safe.
- Keep a manual stash and objective checklist because the game does not provide normal HUD assistance in Ranger Mode.
- Make separate saves before stealth-only or kill-all objectives.
Do I need separate Survival and Spartan playthroughs?
Plan for two requirements. Deep Silver presents Survival and Spartan as separate campaign play styles, and Steam lists distinct completion achievements for each mode. The available descriptions do not establish that one completion awards both, so do not rely on a single-run solution.
| Mode | Practical approach | Why plan separately? |
|---|---|---|
| Survival 2033 | Use scarce resources carefully, favour stealth and preserve filters and ammunition. | Steam names Survival as its own completion requirement. |
| Spartan 2033 | Use the more action-oriented ruleset to pursue combat counters and weapon kills. | Steam names Spartan as its own completion requirement. |
Choose the mode that best suits each objective, but keep a save at the start of chapters with mutually opposed requirements.
How do I collect every Ranger stash in Dead City?
- Start a manual checklist. Write one line for every stash before entering Dead City; Ranger Mode removes the HUD/UI that normally helps with navigation.
- Search methodically. Clear each building, upper floor, side room and exterior detour before moving to the next landmark. Do not assume a stash is on the critical path.
- Confirm the pickup. Record each stash immediately after collecting it rather than trusting memory.
- Use chapter replay if necessary. If the achievement does not unlock, replay Dead City and compare your notes against a complete stash list rather than randomly revisiting locations.
The achievement requirement is limited to Ranger stashes in Dead City; other collectibles belong to separate achievements.

Which chapter achievements need separate plans?
Several Steam descriptions impose opposite rules. Treat these as separate attempts and create a backup save before the relevant chapter.
OUTPOST: DJ Artyom
Reach the radio tower and broadcast the commander’s message. Follow the route to the tower and complete the broadcast rather than leaving the area early.
DEPOT: Raider
Silently kill the first guard and enter the Fascist station without being noticed. Save before the opening guard so an alert does not force a full restart.
FRONTLINE: Invisible man
Complete Frontline without killing anyone. Avoid lethal takedowns, stray shots and environmental kills, and reload if a death is attributed to you.

FRONTLINE: Hedge-hopper
Kill every Red Army and Fascist soldier on Frontline. This is the opposite of Invisible man, so use a different save and a dedicated sweep for both factions.
BLACK STATION: Merciful
Finish Black Station without killing or knocking out enemies. Do not use non-lethal knockouts as substitutes for kills; the description excludes both.
Marksman
Make 15 human headshots from at least 30 metres. Keep a distance, use a stable sight picture and track the counter separately from ordinary human kills.
Which cumulative counters should I track?
Steam provides explicit totals for these counters. A checklist prevents a late cleanup run with the wrong weapon or enemy type.
| Achievement target | Required total |
|---|---|
| Human kills | 100 |
| Human headshots | 30 |
| Nosalis kills | 100 |
| Watchmen kills | 50 |
| Assault-rifle kills | 100 |
| Mutant kills | 200 |
| Shotgun kills | 100 |
Other combat counters include Tank (kill 10 enemies in a row without taking damage), Fire in the hole (20 lurkers), Inquisitor (two demons), Heavy Reader (a librarian), Pathoanatomist (five amoebas), Snake (15 stealth kills), Pyro (30 flamethrower kills), Shocking (30 Hellbreath kills), Slice & Dice (30 close-combat human kills), Ka-Boom! (30 enemies exploded), and Fire! (30 enemies killed with flame grenades).
What collectibles and economy objectives are easy to miss?
A Metro Redux guide lists 51 hidden diary pages and a 15-safe target for the safe-box achievement. It explicitly warns that 15 is not the total number of safes in the game, so treat it as the achievement threshold, not an exhaustive safe count. The same guide lists 27 chapter-select entries, which makes chapter cleanup practical after the campaign.
- Blogger: collect all 51 hidden diary pages.
- Thief: open 15 locked safe boxes.
- Scrooge: save 1,000 military-grade rounds.
- Wheeler-Dealer: exchange 500 military-grade 5.45 rounds at exchange kiosks.
- Generous: help the poor, give the child a coin and provide medicine to the sick.
- Metro Trader: make 30 deals in weapon shops.
Do not spend military-grade ammunition casually if you are pursuing Scrooge or Wheeler-Dealer in the same run.

What is the safest completion order?
- Use a first pass to learn routes and mark Dead City stashes, diaries and safe boxes.
- Complete one campaign mode while pursuing cumulative combat and economy counters.
- Replay chapters through chapter select for route-specific objectives, keeping separate saves for Invisible man, Hedge-hopper and Merciful.
- Complete the other named campaign mode, Survival or Spartan, rather than assuming one run counts for both.
- Review the Steam achievement list and your manual checklist before starting any final cleanup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I unlock the Ranger stash achievement after finishing the story?
Yes. Chapter replay provides a cleanup route for Dead City, provided you revisit every stash location and collect any that were missed. Keep a written checklist because the normal HUD is unavailable in Ranger Mode.
Are Invisible man and Hedge-hopper compatible in one Frontline run?
Their stated requirements conflict: one forbids killing anyone, while the other requires killing all Red Army and Fascist soldiers. Use separate saves and treat them as separate chapter plans.
Does knocking out an enemy count as mercy for Merciful?
No. The Steam description requires completing Black Station without killing or knocking out enemies, so non-lethal takedowns do not satisfy that condition.
