Radium water means water containing radium, a naturally occurring radioactive contaminant; mineral water is a U.S. bottled-water category defined by its underground source and mineral content. The terms describe different things, so mineral water can contain radium, and the label alone does not establish its radium level or safety.
What is the difference between radium water and mineral water?
| Question | Water containing radium | Mineral water |
|---|---|---|
| What does the term describe? | The presence of radium, a naturally occurring radioactive contaminant that can dissolve into water from rock and soil. EPA explains how radionuclides enter drinking water. | A bottled-water type sourced underground and meeting FDA criteria for dissolved solids and mineral origin. FDA’s bottled-water overview. |
| Is it a product category? | No. “Radium water” is an informal description of water containing radium, not a formal style of drinking water. | Yes. The category is defined by source and mineral content. |
| Does the name establish safety? | No. The concentration and applicable standards matter. | No. “Mineral” does not indicate a radium measurement or mean the water is radium-free. |
| What should you check? | A current water-quality report or an appropriately conducted test for combined radium-226 and radium-228. | Current product quality information and any available product-specific test results. |
What qualifies as mineral water in the United States?
Under the FDA definition, mineral water comes from an underground source, contains at least 250 parts per million total dissolved solids, and gets its minerals and trace elements from that source. Those criteria describe mineral content and origin—not the absence of radium. FDA’s bottled-water overview.
Does mineral water contain radium?
It may, but the category name cannot tell you whether a particular product contains radium or at what concentration. Radium occurs naturally in some rock and soil and can dissolve into water. Mineral content and radium concentration are separate properties, so check current product-specific quality information rather than inferring radium status from the label. FDA says bottled-water producers must sample and test source water and the finished product for contaminants. FDA’s bottled-water overview.
What is the U.S. limit for radium in drinking water?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s current online regulations table lists a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 5 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) for combined radium-226 and radium-228 in public drinking water. This is a regulatory limit, not a statement that every sample below it contains zero radium. The figure is specific to U.S. public-water standards; requirements elsewhere may differ. How does bottled-water oversight fit in?
In the United States, EPA regulates public drinking water and FDA regulates bottled water. FDA’s compliance guide describes the bottled-water quality standard for combined radium-226 and radium-228 as aligned with public-water standards. The guide is agency guidance, not itself a binding regulation; the standard does not amount to a product-specific measurement or a guarantee of zero contamination. FDA’s bottled-water compliance guide.
Is mineral water safer than tap water?
Neither label establishes that one is safer. Mineral water describes a bottled product’s source and mineral content; “tap water” usually comes from a public water system subject to EPA rules. To assess radium, use the relevant, current water-quality information for the specific product or water system. FDA requires bottled-water producers to test source water and finished product for contaminants, while public water systems test and use treatment methods to address contaminants. What does radium in drinking water mean for health?
EPA says that some people who drink water containing radium-226 or radium-228 above the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of cancer. That is a qualified statement about long-term exposure and increased risk; a single result above the limit does not by itself establish an individual’s health outcome. How to check your water for radium
- If you use public tap water: Get your water supplier’s current water-quality report and check whether it reports combined radium-226 and radium-228.
- If you use bottled mineral water: Look for current product quality information or product-specific test results. The mineral-water label itself does not provide a radium result.
- If the information does not answer your question: Contact the supplier or manufacturer, or seek an appropriately qualified laboratory test. A measurement needs to address combined radium-226 and radium-228 to compare with the U.S. public-water MCL.
