The companies filled different roles in Rackspace’s cloud strategy: Slicehost provided virtual machine hosting, while Jungle Disk offered online storage and backup software.
What Rackspace acquired
The businesses were complementary, not competing services. Slicehost supplied computing capacity through virtual machines; Jungle Disk helped customers access and back up files in online storage.
| Company | Product role | What Rackspace described |
|---|---|---|
| Slicehost | Compute | Xen-based virtual machine hosting. Rackspace said in its 2008 announcement that more than 15,000 “slices” were online; that was a company-reported figure at the time, not a current count. Rackspace’s announcement and its November 2008 results release describe the figure. |
| Jungle Disk | Storage access and backup | Online storage software and services, including a secure mountable network drive and automatic backup. Rackspace’s announcement described these offerings. |
When the acquisitions were announced and completed
Rackspace announced on October 22, 2008 that it had agreed to acquire both businesses. That date marks the announcement of agreements, not the completion of the transactions. Rackspace’s Form 10-Q subsequently reported that the acquisitions were completed in October 2008. The announcement and the filing establish the distinction.
What Rackspace reported about the deal terms
In its 2008 Form 10-Q, Rackspace reported approximately $11.5 million in combined consideration in cash and stock for the acquisitions. The filing also described the potential for up to $16.5 million in additional cash and stock under contingent earnout provisions. That figure is the maximum potential payout described in the filing, not evidence that the amount was ultimately paid. Rackspace’s Form 10-Q is the source for these terms.

- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
How the acquisitions fit Rackspace’s cloud strategy
Rackspace presented the acquisitions as additions to its cloud hosting strategy and said it planned to integrate them into its broader hosting offers. CEO Lanham Napier said, “Cloud computing offers tremendous benefits to our customers that complement our traditional managed hosting services.” The October announcement attributes the statement to Napier.
A 2009 Rackspace release described integration follow-through and announced a suite comprising Cloud Sites, Cloud Files, and Cloud Servers. Together, those services reflected the strategy behind bringing storage and virtual-server capabilities into the company’s cloud portfolio. Rackspace’s 2009 release reported the launches and integration.

Jungle Disk and Cloud Files
In October 2008, Rackspace said Jungle Disk would continue supporting Amazon S3 while the company planned a port to Rackspace Cloud Files. This describes the direction Rackspace announced at the time; it does not establish present-day compatibility or availability. The acquisition announcement sets out that plan.

The cited company announcements, SEC filing, and 2009 update document the transactions and Rackspace’s stated integration plans at the time. They do not establish the current ownership, branding, or availability of Jungle Disk or Slicehost services, nor whether any contingent earnout was ultimately paid.
