If you are asking “where should I begin?” with R, start by getting R and an IDE working, then practice small examples and follow a structured data workflow. There is no single route that fits every beginner: an interactive lesson suits someone who wants to start coding immediately, while a book-led path gives more room to build a complete analysis from importing data through communicating results.

Choose a starting route that fits how you learn

Before choosing a tutorial, decide whether you want guided exercises or a book, whether you can install software on your computer, and whether your immediate goal is general R fluency or data analysis. The options below are complementary rather than competing courses.

Route Best fit Format and scope Access
R for Data Science (2e) Beginners through intermediate learners who want an end-to-end data workflow Book-led; data import, tidying, transformation, visualization, programming, and communication with Quarto; includes a base R field guide Online text is free; a physical copy is optional
ModernDive New R and RStudio learners who want an introductory learning path Structured learning material recommended by the tidyverse learning page Online resource
Posit and tidyverse cheat sheets Learners who already practice and need a quick syntax reminder Compact reference sheets for package functions; supplementary, not a course Free resource
Posit interactive lessons Learners who want to try code early, including those who prefer a browser-based format Interactive introductions; Posit describes browser-based tutorials that do not require local installation Availability and current service labels can change; check the linked Posit learning pages

O’Reilly describes R for Data Science, 2nd Edition as a beginner-to-intermediate book published in June 2023, with 576 pages, by Hadley Wickham, Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel, and Garrett Grolemund: publisher listing. That edition’s online text remains free on its official site; buying print is optional.

Install R, an IDE, and packages in the right order

R is the programming language. An integrated development environment (IDE) gives you a more useful place to write and run code. Packages add functionality to R. Posit’s beginner setup guidance treats installing R, installing RStudio, and installing packages such as tidyverse as separate steps, a distinction that can otherwise trip up new learners.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Install R by following the instructions for your operating system on the Posit download page.
  2. Install RStudio Desktop, the IDE. RStudio is not the R language itself; it works with an installed R version.
  3. Open RStudio and install a package only when your tutorial needs it. For example, the tidyverse is a collection of packages for common data-science tasks.
  4. For a guided setup, use ModernDive or the beginner lessons from R-Ladies Sydney, both named by Posit as learner resources.

Posit has described cloud tutorials that let learners begin without a local installation. Some older Posit pages use the former RStudio Cloud name, so verify the current product name, access requirements, and availability on the relevant Posit page rather than relying on an old label. Posit Support also describes introductory interactive lessons, including Try R; check the page to see whether a particular legacy lesson is still available.

Learn basic R by running code, not just watching it

Once you have access to an R session, type examples, run them, change a value, and observe what changes. That feedback loop teaches more than reading code without executing it. Begin with objects and assignments, vectors, functions, data frames, and simple plots; then try a small analysis on a dataset.

  • Keep each example small enough to understand its input and output.
  • When an error appears, read the message and inspect the line that produced it instead of pasting in a large block of unfamiliar code.
  • Save useful code in a script so you can rerun it, edit it, and build on it.
  • Use a cheat sheet to look up syntax while working, but return to a tutorial or documentation when you need to understand why a function behaves a certain way.

Posit’s learning resources include routes for different experience levels and formats. If browser-based exercises appeal to you, check its current options there; the availability and naming of cloud products may differ from older tutorial pages.

Follow a real data-science workflow

After the first syntax exercises, learn R by carrying a dataset through the stages of an analysis. R for Data Science, second edition is organized around this kind of practical work: bringing data into R, structuring it, transforming and visualizing it, programming, and communicating results with Quarto.

  1. Import: bring data into R and check what it contains.
  2. Tidy: organize it in a consistent shape so each observation and variable can be worked with clearly.
  3. Transform and explore: filter, summarize, and compare data to answer focused questions.
  4. Visualize: build plots that make patterns and comparisons easier to see.
  5. Program: use functions and iteration to make repeated work clearer and less error-prone.
  6. Communicate: present the process and results in a report, including with Quarto.

This is a data-science path, not a claim that every R task uses the same tools. Tidyverse packages are designed to work together for common tasks such as cleaning, transforming, and visualizing data, and can help learners complete a coherent workflow. They do not replace the language: the second edition of R for Data Science also includes a field guide to base R. Learning some base R alongside a tidyverse-centered workflow makes it easier to understand examples and code beyond one package family.

Keep analyses organized in RStudio

RStudio’s editor, console, environment, and output panes each serve a different role: write code in the editor, run commands and see messages in the console, inspect objects in the environment, and view plots or other results in the output panes. The current RStudio User Guide explains the IDE and its project workflow.

  • Use a project for each analysis. A project keeps related scripts, data, and outputs together.
  • Save the analysis in scripts. A saved script is easier to review and rerun than a sequence of commands left only in the console.
  • Install packages once, load them in each session. Installation adds a package to your R setup; loading it makes its functions available in the session.
  • Restart with a clean workspace when checking your work. An analysis that runs from a blank session is less likely to depend on objects you created earlier but did not save in the script.

Decide what to study next

Once you can complete and explain a small data workflow, follow the part of R that matches your goal. Posit’s overview of R learning resources points learners toward several extensions:

  • Deeper language fundamentals: Advanced R is a route for learners ready to explore more complex R programming concepts.
  • Interactive applications: Shiny lessons and resources help you build web applications with R.
  • Statistical modeling: tidymodels is a path into modeling workflows.
  • Reporting: Quarto extends the communication side of an analysis.
  • Package development: R Packages is a resource for learning how to build R packages.

For a shorter introductory book instead of a full data-science workflow, Posit also names Hands-On Programming with R. Its beginner page describes free online and paid print or electronic formats, but the book dates to 2014, so check whether its material suits your R version and learning goal before choosing it: Posit beginner resources.
