Samsung later reported an 8.5 Gbps LPDDR5X validation for Snapdragon in October 2022.
What Qualcomm validated
Samsung’s March 3, 2022 announcement said Qualcomm Technologies had validated Samsung’s 14nm-based 16Gb LPDDR5X DRAM for use on Snapdragon mobile platforms. LPDDR5X stands for Low Power Double Data Rate 5X. Samsung describes it as an enhanced version of LPDDR5 designed to support higher transfer rates and improved power efficiency. How the 2022 speeds compare
Samsung reported a 7.5 Gbps data rate for the LPDDR5X solution it optimized for Snapdragon in March 2022. In that release, Samsung compared it with 6.4 Gbps LPDDR5 used in premium smartphones at the time. That is a 1.1 Gbps, or roughly 17% higher, reported data rate—not a measured 17% improvement in overall phone performance. The later 8.5 Gbps milestone was announced on October 18, 2022. Samsung reproduced Qualcomm executive Ziad Asghar’s statement that Qualcomm was the first in the mobile industry to enable LPDDR5X at 8.5 Gbps on Snapdragon mobile platforms. Samsung’s current product page lists LPDDR5X capability up to 10.7 Gbps and says a later product context offers nearly 25% lower power consumption versus the previous LPDDR5X generation. Those current-page figures describe a different, later product context; they should not be applied to the 2022 Snapdragon validation. What the memory could mean for phone features
Samsung and Qualcomm associated LPDDR5X enablement with potential improvements or support for gaming, camera functions, AI applications, and high-resolution video. These are the companies’ stated expectations for platforms using the memory. The announcements do not provide independent user-level benchmarks or show that memory alone produces a specific feature, frame rate, camera result, or battery-life gain.
In March 2022, Samsung estimated that its LPDDR5X solution could reduce power consumption by approximately 20%, citing circuit design and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). Does this identify a Snapdragon phone to buy?
No specific handset is named in the two 2022 releases or the cited product page. The validation shows that the memory was enabled for Snapdragon platform use; by itself, it does not establish which retail phones used it, when those phones shipped, or how they performed in real-world testing. There is also no consumer-installable memory module or upgrade identified here. A device-specific buying comparison requires a manufacturer specification tying a named phone to its actual memory configuration.
