Qualcomm announced the Robotics RB5 platform on June 16, 2020. It is a robotics development platform built around the QRB5165 processor, pairing edge-AI computing with camera support, software and development tools, and optional 4G or 5G connectivity through a companion module. The specifications below are Qualcomm’s published launch claims, not independent performance-test results.

What is the Qualcomm Robotics RB5 platform?

RB5 is a development platform for building robots and drones, not simply a processor. Qualcomm’s offering combines the QRB5165 robotics processor with software, drivers, development tools, and a customizable development kit. Its intended applications include autonomous mobile robots, delivery, inspection, inventory, industrial and collaborative robots, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

At launch, Qualcomm said more than 20 early adopters were evaluating RB5 and more than 30 companies were developing supporting hardware or software. The named ecosystem included TDK, AWS, Intel RealSense, Open Robotics, Autoware Foundation, ModalAI, Skydio, SoftBank Robotics, Thundercomm, and Tier IV. These are launch-era ecosystem figures, not a measure of current adoption.

What is the QRB5165 processor?

The QRB5165 is the computing core of the RB5 platform. Qualcomm described a heterogeneous design that combines processing, graphics, AI, computer vision, and image-processing hardware:

  • An octa-core Kryo 585 CPU and Adreno 650 GPU.
  • Multiple DSPs and a fifth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine with a Hexagon Tensor Accelerator. Qualcomm rated the AI Engine at 15 TOPS.
  • An Enhanced Video Analytics engine, a dedicated computer-vision hardware block.
  • A Spectra 480 image signal processor (ISP), specified by Qualcomm at 2 gigapixels per second.

Those figures describe Qualcomm’s published specifications; they do not, by themselves, establish real-world throughput for a particular robot. Performance depends on the workload and system design.

Does RB5 support 5G?

Yes, but 5G is provided through a companion module rather than being described as built into the QRB5165 processor. Qualcomm also listed 4G connectivity, long-range Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), and Bluetooth 5.1. Its launch materials characterized 5G as offering multi-gigabit peak data speeds and ultra-low latency, alongside potential computing, intelligence, and sensing capabilities for robotics. Actual network performance depends on the module, carrier, coverage, and deployment.

How many cameras can Qualcomm RB5 handle?

Qualcomm said RB5 supports seven concurrent cameras. The platform’s ISP is specified at 2 gigapixels per second. Qualcomm positioned multiple-camera processing for tasks such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), object detection and classification, navigation, and path planning in indoor or outdoor settings. These are platform capabilities, not a guarantee that every seven-camera configuration will meet a given robot’s frame-rate, resolution, or processing requirements.

What software and development tools does the RB5 kit support?

Qualcomm listed Linux, Ubuntu, and Robot Operating System (ROS) 2.0 support for the development kit, plus pre-integrated drivers for cameras, sensors, and 5G connectivity. The software stack also supports OpenCL, OpenGL ES, and OpenCV.

Hardware listed as included or supported in the kit ecosystem includes an Intel RealSense Depth Camera D435i, a Panasonic time-of-flight camera, and TDK sensing and motor-control components. The specific configuration of a kit may depend on its supplier and availability.

What can you build with an RB5 development kit?

The platform is aimed at prototypes and systems that need on-device perception, navigation, or connectivity. Examples consistent with Qualcomm’s stated target areas include:

Qualcomm also highlighted security features relevant to connected devices: secure boot, cryptographic accelerators, a trusted execution environment, camera and key-provisioning security, malware protection, remote attestation, and secure device provisioning. The company stated that the Secure Processing Unit is FIPS 140-2 certified.

Partner contributions broadened the development context. AWS described a cloud-to-edge collaboration intended to help developers build intelligent robotic functions and manage the robotics lifecycle; TDK contributed sensing technologies and motor-control hardware. These partnerships do not establish that a specific cloud service or accessory is included in every kit.

Where can you buy the Qualcomm Robotics RB5 Development Kit?

Qualcomm’s June 2020 launch announcement said the development kit was available for preorder through Thundercomm and that commercial products based on RB5 were expected in 2020. That announcement does not establish present-day stock, pricing, regional availability, or ongoing support. Check Thundercomm or other authorized suppliers directly for current availability and the exact kit configuration.

Qualcomm also cited an extended lifecycle option until 2029 in its 2020 launch materials. That is a launch-era statement, not confirmation of current product status or support terms; buyers should verify lifecycle commitments with the supplier for their intended deployment.

What should you compare before choosing RB5?

For a robotics project, compare platforms against the actual system requirements rather than relying on a single AI-performance figure. Useful evaluation points include:

  • Edge-AI performance on the intended models and workloads.
  • Camera and sensor concurrency, including resolution and frame-rate needs.
  • Wireless options, including whether 5G requires a separate module.
  • Power use, cooling, and the thermal envelope of the final robot.
  • Operating-system, ROS, driver, and middleware compatibility.
  • Security capabilities and the vendor’s provisioning and update process.
  • Temperature range, lifecycle commitments, and long-term component availability.
  • Development-kit configuration, supplier availability, and cloud or hardware integrations.

Qualcomm announced RB5 on June 16, 2020. Its disclosed specifications make it a robotics-oriented combination of AI, imaging, connectivity, and developer support, while current purchasing and support details must be confirmed with suppliers.
