QSSR is Sony’s AI upscaling option for the base PS5; PSSR is the higher-performance tier for PS5 Pro; and FSR is AMD’s upscaling technology used in platform- and game-specific implementations. Sony says its updated PSSR grew out of its collaboration with AMD and is related to FSR 4, but that does not make QSSR, PSSR, and every version of FSR interchangeable. Which one you can use depends on your console or PC and whether a game supports it.
What QSSR, PSSR, and FSR mean
Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a game image rendered at a lower resolution. AI-based approaches use learned models to estimate fine detail, but their results depend on the algorithm, game, scene, and implementation.
QSSR: AI upscaling for base PS5
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s newly announced performance-oriented upscaling tier for the standard PlayStation 5. Sony says it uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed around PS5 performance constraints. The announcement does not give a full technical specification or measured frame-rate gains. Sony’s QSSR announcement
PSSR: Sony’s PS5 Pro technology
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI upscaling library for PS5 Pro. Sony says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel and has been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That is Sony’s adoption count for PSSR, not a count of QSSR games or a measure of image quality. Sony calls PSSR the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro; that is Sony’s characterization, not an independent ranking. Sony’s PSSR and AMD collaboration announcement

FSR: AMD’s upscaling technology
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is used in game-specific implementations across supported platforms. Sony says its updated PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD, and points to FSR 4 on PC as an expression of that collaboration. This establishes a relationship between the technologies, not that QSSR is FSR 4 or that every FSR version works like PSSR.
How the technologies compare
| Technology | Where it applies | What is established | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Base PS5 | Sony describes a streamlined, hand-tuned neural network intended to improve detail and stability while fitting PS5 performance constraints. | Whether the particular game has a QSSR patch and graphics option. |
| PSSR | PS5 Pro | Sony describes a pixel-by-pixel AI library and says it has been used in over 50 PS5 Pro titles. | Whether the game supports PSSR and which graphics mode uses it. |
| FSR | Platform- and game-specific, including PC | AMD’s family of upscaling technologies; Sony identifies FSR 4 as related to its collaboration with AMD. | The game’s supported FSR version, platform, and graphics settings. |
There is no matched comparison in the available sources that tests QSSR, PSSR, and FSR across games using the same input resolution, output resolution, frame rate, latency, and image-quality criteria. A universal winner therefore cannot be established from the published comparisons.

Detail and image stability
Sony and its studio partners describe QSSR as improving clarity in fine details and keeping those details more stable over time. This matters for foliage, hair, fabric, particles, and other small or moving elements, where reconstruction can shimmer, flicker, or lose detail as the camera or object moves. Ubisoft’s account of upgraded PSSR in Assassin’s Creed Shadows likewise discusses moving vegetation, particles, transparency, and noisy ray-traced effects, but it describes that game’s implementation rather than a general result for every PSSR title. Ubisoft’s technical article on Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Performance
Upscaling can help a game produce a higher-resolution output without rendering every pixel at that output resolution. It does not, by itself, establish a specific frame-rate increase: that depends on the game’s rendering workload, settings, and implementation. Sony says QSSR is tuned for base PS5 performance constraints, but it has not published comparative figures for the named QSSR games.

What the first QSSR games show
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games patched to add QSSR as a graphics option. Sony says it plans to make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, but it has not published a complete list or schedule. Support is therefore game- and patch-specific, not a feature to assume is active in every PS5 game. Sony’s QSSR announcement
Studio comments are positive but should be read as developer descriptions, not controlled measurements. Insomniac Games’ head of technology says QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ lead rendering engineer says it resolves fine character and environmental detail with temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei. Independent hands-on coverage summarized for the two games reported especially strong visible gains in Wolverine and less dramatic gains in Ghost of Yōtei. Those observations cover only two games; they do not establish how QSSR will look across other engines, scenes, or settings. Independent hands-on coverage of QSSR

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
How to tell which option a game uses
- Confirm the hardware. QSSR is for base PS5; PSSR is for PS5 Pro. FSR support depends on the platform and game.
- Check the game’s current support information. Look for a patch note or official game information naming QSSR, PSSR, or a specific FSR version.
- Open the game’s graphics settings. If the game provides an upscaling choice, select the named option and check whether it is tied to a Performance, Balanced, or Quality mode.
- Judge the result in motion. Look at fine detail during camera movement, especially foliage, hair, particles, and transparent effects. A still image may not reveal shimmer or loss of detail over time.
Platform-specific choices are normal. For example, IO Interactive says 007 First Light uses upgraded PSSR by default on PS5 Pro and FSR 3.1.5 on other platforms. That example illustrates different implementations by platform; it is not an apples-to-apples quality test. IO Interactive’s 007 First Light technical information

What the current evidence can—and cannot—tell you
- Sony’s announcements establish QSSR’s target platform, design intent, and initial supported games; they do not disclose a complete compatibility list, detailed technical specification, or matched performance measurements.
- Sony’s PSSR figures and descriptions apply to PS5 Pro, not QSSR on base PS5. Its corporate presentation uses the label “PSSR 2.0” and describes machine learning for clearer 4K visuals at high frame rates; that wording is a corporate claim, not a comparative benchmark. Sony corporate presentation
- Game-specific developer accounts can explain what a studio observes in its own implementation, but they do not prove the same gain in other games.
- Independent QSSR observations summarized here cover two titles, not a controlled, cross-game comparison of QSSR, PSSR, and FSR.
