Qdrant launched Qdrant Hybrid Cloud on April 15, 2024, describing the product as the industry’s first managed vector database that can run in a customer-selected public cloud, on-premises environment, or edge location. Qdrant operates the management plane, while the customer’s Kubernetes environment runs the database and retains control of data, compute, storage, and networking.

The launch matters because Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is not conventional SaaS and not ordinary self-hosting. Qdrant Cloud supplies the management interface and database lifecycle controls, but Qdrant database clusters run inside infrastructure controlled by the customer. That model targets organizations that need managed operations without placing vector data in a vendor-operated data plane.

Qdrant’s “first” wording should remain attributed to Qdrant. The available announcement confirms the April 2024 launch and Qdrant’s market claim, but does not establish a complete comparison with every earlier vector-search, database, or hybrid-cloud product.

Qdrant positioned the launch around enterprise AI applications that need vector search but cannot freely move sensitive data into a vendor-controlled SaaS environment. Relevant workloads include retrieval-augmented generation, generative AI applications, semantic and neural search, recommendations, similarity search, anomaly detection, and data analysis. The Business Wire release describes the enterprise-AI positioning, while Qdrant’s product material describes the deployment flexibility.

The central proposition is straightforward: a platform team can use Qdrant’s managed database experience while keeping the database cluster in infrastructure that the platform team controls. Qdrant Hybrid Cloud therefore sits between a fully managed cloud database and a completely self-managed open-source deployment.

What does “managed hybrid cloud” mean in Qdrant’s architecture?

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud separates the management plane from the data plane. Qdrant Cloud supplies the management interface and lifecycle controls, while the customer’s Kubernetes environment runs the Qdrant database, persistent storage, network connections, and user data.

The deployment process begins with the customer providing a Kubernetes cluster. Qdrant Hybrid Cloud deploys Qdrant database and control-plane components into the cluster. The customer then uses the Qdrant Cloud interface to create and manage database clusters. A built-in Helm controller handles deployment components, lifecycle operations, updates, and scheduling.

Qdrant’s Hybrid Cloud documentation says the customer does not need to expose the Kubernetes cluster to Qdrant Cloud, open incoming ports, or provide Kubernetes or cloud-provider credentials to the Qdrant Cloud platform. Those statements describe an important network and access design, but buyers should still confirm the required outbound connectivity, firewall rules, identity model, and support-access process during technical evaluation.

How is Qdrant Hybrid Cloud different from Qdrant Cloud, Private Cloud, and OSS?

Qdrant’s products differ mainly in who controls the infrastructure, where the data plane runs, and how much operational responsibility remains with the customer.

Option Where the database runs Who operates the underlying infrastructure? Best fit
Qdrant Cloud Qdrant-managed cloud infrastructure Qdrant operates the service infrastructure Teams that want conventional managed SaaS and can place data in Qdrant-managed infrastructure
Qdrant Hybrid Cloud Customer-controlled public cloud, on-premises, or edge Kubernetes The customer operates Kubernetes and infrastructure; Qdrant manages the Qdrant database lifecycle Organizations needing local data placement with less database-operations burden
Qdrant Private Cloud Dedicated or isolated customer environment, including environments designed for air-gapped requirements Responsibility depends on the contracted deployment model, but the product targets stricter isolation and compliance needs Sensitive, dedicated, highly isolated, or air-gapped deployments
Qdrant OSS Infrastructure selected by the customer The customer operates Qdrant and the surrounding platform Teams wanting maximum control, self-management, and open-source deployment

Qdrant Cloud is the lowest-friction option when data can reside in Qdrant-managed infrastructure. Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is the compromise for teams that want Qdrant-managed database lifecycle operations but need customer-controlled infrastructure. Qdrant Private Cloud is the option to investigate when dedicated isolation or air-gapped operation is mandatory. Qdrant OSS provides the most direct control but leaves the customer responsible for the complete operating model.

Qdrant promotes the same engine, data format, and APIs across self-hosted, hybrid, and managed cloud deployments on its Qdrant Cloud page. API and data-format continuity can reduce migration friction, but continuity does not remove the need to test backups, upgrades, networking, performance, and operational procedures in the target environment.

What stays inside the customer’s environment?

Qdrant states that Qdrant databases operate within the customer’s network and use customer compute, storage, and network resources. Qdrant also states that user data is not accessible to Qdrant Cloud or outsiders outside the organization. The precise security interpretation is that database data remains isolated in the customer environment; the interpretation is not that no information ever leaves the environment.

Qdrant’s documentation identifies management information that can be exchanged with the Qdrant Cloud platform. The documented categories include Kubernetes cluster configuration, database configuration, collection counts and names, vector counts, query and indexing activity, telemetry, notification data, and Kubernetes operations or scheduling events. The Qdrant Hybrid Cloud documentation should be treated as the authoritative starting point for a data-flow review.

Information or resource Expected location or owner Procurement question
Vector data and payloads Customer-controlled Qdrant data plane Does the contractual and technical design keep all sensitive payloads within the required country, VPC, facility, or regulatory boundary?
Compute, storage, and network Customer or customer-selected infrastructure provider Who pays for capacity, storage performance, network transfer, and resilience?
Cluster and database configuration Database runs in the customer environment; configuration information can be sent to Qdrant Cloud Which configuration fields are transmitted, retained, and protected?
Collection names and vector counts Database remains in the customer environment; management metadata can be exchanged Do names, counts, or workload metadata reveal sensitive business information?
Query and indexing activity Operational information can be sent to the management platform Is workload telemetry permitted by the organization’s privacy and compliance policy?
Telemetry and notifications Qdrant Cloud management plane Can the organization restrict, review, or audit the telemetry path?

“Data stays in your network” and “the deployment is air-gapped” are therefore different claims. A genuinely disconnected environment must be evaluated against the management-plane connection, telemetry path, support model, upgrade process, and emergency-access design. Qdrant positions Private Cloud for dedicated, isolated, sensitive, and air-gapped deployments, so buyers should not assume that Hybrid Cloud automatically satisfies a no-external-connectivity requirement.

What does Qdrant manage, and what does the customer still own?

Qdrant manages the Qdrant database service and its lifecycle through the management plane; Qdrant does not thereby become the operator of the customer’s complete Kubernetes or cloud environment.

Responsibility Qdrant’s likely role Customer or infrastructure-provider role
Database-cluster creation and configuration Provides management controls through Qdrant Cloud Defines capacity, placement, policies, and environment constraints
Qdrant deployment components Deploys and manages Qdrant components through the Helm controller Provides a compatible Kubernetes environment and required permissions or connectivity
Database lifecycle and updates Coordinates lifecycle operations, updates, and scheduling Approves change windows, maintains platform compatibility, and validates rollback procedures
Kubernetes control plane Not described as managed by Qdrant Hybrid Cloud Customer or cloud provider operates the Kubernetes control plane
Compute and node capacity Uses the capacity provided by the customer environment Sizes, purchases, provisions, and scales nodes
Storage durability and performance Uses customer-provided storage for the database Chooses storage classes, IOPS, replication, snapshots, and retention
Network routing, DNS, and firewalling Requires the environment to support the management and application paths Designs and operates routing, access policy, ingress or egress, and connectivity
Backups and disaster recovery Must be confirmed in the commercial and technical design Defines recovery objectives and verifies backup, restore, and cross-region procedures
Application security and access Provides Qdrant service controls within the contracted model Integrates identity, secrets, network policy, monitoring, and application authorization

“Managed database” should not be translated into “managed infrastructure.” The customer may still own Kubernetes upgrades, node failures, persistent-volume failures, capacity planning, access policies, observability, backup storage, disaster recovery, and provider charges. Qdrant’s pricing and deployment information should be read alongside the proposed support agreement and responsibility matrix.

Which Kubernetes and infrastructure environments does Qdrant Hybrid Cloud support?

Qdrant describes Hybrid Cloud as Kubernetes-native and says the product works with standard-compliant Kubernetes distributions. The launch announcement named or referenced Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Red Hat OpenShift, Vultr, DigitalOcean, OVHcloud, Scaleway, Civo, STACKIT, VMware vSphere, AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.

The named environments should not automatically be read as a complete commercial support matrix. The announcement combines cloud providers, infrastructure environments, and launch collaborators. Before deployment, a buyer should confirm the exact Kubernetes distributions and versions, storage classes, networking model, authentication requirements, upgrade policy, and support status for the selected environment with Qdrant.

Environment category Examples named in Qdrant’s launch material What still needs validation
Public cloud AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Vultr, DigitalOcean, OVHcloud, Scaleway, Civo, STACKIT Managed Kubernetes service, region, version, storage, outbound access, support boundary, and provider charges
Enterprise private cloud Red Hat OpenShift, VMware vSphere Operator permissions, persistent storage, network policy, lifecycle compatibility, and support entitlement
On-premises and edge Customer-selected Kubernetes environments Hardware capacity, connectivity to Qdrant Cloud, local resilience, upgrades, support access, and disconnected-operation requirements

Why would an enterprise choose Qdrant Hybrid Cloud?

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is most compelling when a company needs managed database operations but cannot or does not want to place sensitive vector data in Qdrant-managed SaaS infrastructure.

  • Data residency and sovereignty: customer-controlled infrastructure can help keep vectors and payloads in a required country, region, VPC, facility, or organizational boundary, subject to the actual architecture and contract.
  • Regulated workloads: a local data plane can simplify discussions about data handling, but the organization must still review telemetry, access, retention, encryption, audit, and support processes.
  • Latency-sensitive applications: placing Qdrant near applications or source data can reduce the need to move data to a distant managed service, although the result depends on the customer’s network and storage design.
  • Edge deployments: edge locations can be useful when data is generated locally or connectivity to a central cloud is constrained. The management-plane connectivity requirements still need testing.
  • Existing Kubernetes operations: teams that already run Kubernetes can preserve their platform standards while outsourcing much of the Qdrant-specific lifecycle work.
  • Portability: the same Qdrant engine, data format, and APIs across deployment models can make a future move between self-hosted, hybrid, and managed Qdrant environments easier.

Hybrid Cloud is less attractive for a small prototype, a team with no Kubernetes operating capability, a workload that fits comfortably in Qdrant Cloud’s managed service, or a deployment that must be completely disconnected from an external management plane.

Is Qdrant’s “industry’s first” claim credible?

Qdrant’s “industry’s first” claim is credible as an attributed April 2024 product-positioning statement, but the available research does not independently prove that Qdrant was the first provider in every possible category of managed vector database or hybrid deployment.

The most defensible wording is: Qdrant announced Hybrid Cloud in April 2024 and marketed the product as the industry’s first managed vector database that could run in a customer-selected public cloud, on-premises, or edge environment. The wording defines the deployment model, identifies the claimant, and preserves the launch date.

Readers should not turn the claim into “Qdrant invented hybrid vector databases,” “no competitor offered anything similar before April 2024,” or “Qdrant remains the only provider with this model.” The 2026 market includes related approaches such as Pinecone’s Bring Your Own Cloud model and managed Milvus through Zilliz, although those products differ in architecture, operating model, and commercial packaging. Qdrant’s original announcement is the source for Qdrant’s historical claim.

How much does Qdrant Hybrid Cloud cost?

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is presented as an Enterprise-plan offering that requires contacting Qdrant, and the retrieved Qdrant pricing page does not provide a public Hybrid Cloud list price. The total business case must therefore include both the Qdrant commercial fee and the customer’s infrastructure and platform costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Customer-side costs can include Kubernetes compute, persistent storage and IOPS, backup and snapshot storage, network transfer, observability and security tools, platform-engineering labor, support, compliance work, and disaster-recovery infrastructure. Hybrid Cloud may reduce Qdrant-specific operational work compared with Qdrant OSS, but customer-owned infrastructure can be cheaper or more expensive depending on utilization, resilience requirements, and staffing.

For context, Qdrant Cloud’s public pricing material describes a free tier with one single-node cluster, 0.5 vCPU, 1 GB of RAM, and 4 GB of disk. Qdrant Cloud’s Standard offering is usage-based, while Premium includes enterprise-oriented features and has sales-led pricing. Those figures describe Qdrant Cloud, not Qdrant Hybrid Cloud.

How does Qdrant compare with other vector-database deployment models?

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud’s differentiator is not simply that Qdrant offers a hosted vector database. The differentiator is a Qdrant-managed control plane for a Qdrant data plane running in customer-controlled Kubernetes.

Option Deployment control Managed-operations profile Pricing signal in the supplied research Likely buyer
Qdrant Hybrid Cloud Customer-controlled Kubernetes in public cloud, on-premises, or edge Qdrant manages Qdrant lifecycle; customer retains infrastructure responsibilities Enterprise and contact-led; no public Hybrid Cloud list price found Enterprise teams with residency, network-isolation, latency, or sovereignty requirements
Qdrant Cloud Qdrant-managed infrastructure Conventional managed service with less infrastructure ownership Free tier; usage-based Standard; Premium and enterprise options Teams prioritizing low operational overhead
Qdrant Private Cloud Dedicated or isolated customer environment Enterprise deployment for stricter isolation and potentially air-gapped requirements Custom enterprise pricing Highly sensitive, dedicated, or air-gapped workloads
Qdrant OSS Customer-selected infrastructure Customer operates the database and platform Software is self-managed; infrastructure and labor still cost money Teams prioritizing control and self-management
Pinecone Primarily vendor-managed SaaS; Enterprise includes Bring Your Own Cloud Strong fully managed SaaS model; enterprise options add private-network and access controls Starter free; Builder $20/month; Standard $50/month minimum; Enterprise $500/month minimum on the cited pricing page Teams wanting a mature managed service or enterprise BYOC
Weaviate Cloud Vendor-managed cloud with cloud-provider and region choices varying by plan Managed AI database with hybrid-search capabilities Free; Flex from $45/month; Premium from $400/month on the cited pricing page Teams valuing integrated AI and search tooling
Zilliz Cloud / Milvus Milvus is open source; Zilliz provides managed Milvus Managed distributed vector database for organizations invested in the Milvus ecosystem One documented example totals $2,856.96/month for a 16-CU dedicated cluster; the example is not a universal quote Milvus users and teams needing its ecosystem or distributed architecture
PostgreSQL plus pgvector Depends on the selected PostgreSQL provider or self-managed environment Existing PostgreSQL team operates the relational and vector workload Hosting and database costs depend on the chosen provider and workload Applications that benefit from keeping vectors beside relational data

Pinecone’s pricing page provides the cited public plan signals, while Weaviate’s pricing page provides the cited Weaviate figures. Zilliz documents the dedicated-cluster example in its cost documentation; the example calculates 16 compute units at $0.248 per compute-unit-hour for 720 hours. A buyer should not compare these numbers as like-for-like total costs because the plans, infrastructure ownership, regions, storage, backups, support, and usage meters differ.

What should an enterprise test before signing?

A serious evaluation should test the complete control-plane and data-plane operating model rather than only creating a collection and running a query.

Data and compliance checklist

  • Must vectors and payloads remain inside a particular country, VPC, facility, or regulated boundary?
  • Can configuration metadata, collection names, vector counts, activity information, notifications, and telemetry leave that boundary?
  • Does the organization require customer-managed encryption keys, specific key custody, audit logs, retention controls, or deletion evidence?
  • Is a genuinely air-gapped or fully disconnected deployment mandatory?
  • Which Qdrant and provider documents establish access controls, support access, incident handling, and data-retention behavior?

Infrastructure checklist

  • Does the team already operate the proposed Kubernetes distribution?
  • Which Kubernetes versions, storage classes, CSI drivers, network policies, and ingress or egress patterns are supported?
  • Can the customer provide reliable persistent storage, sufficient IOPS, snapshots, and capacity headroom?
  • Who owns cluster upgrades, node failures, storage failures, DNS, routing, firewalls, and observability?
  • Does the deployment need outbound connectivity to Qdrant Cloud, and what happens when outbound connectivity is interrupted?

Operations and commercial checklist

  • Can existing databases continue serving queries if Qdrant Cloud’s management plane is unavailable?
  • Which lifecycle operations fail during a control-plane outage?
  • How are upgrades staged, monitored, paused, and rolled back?
  • What support response times, service levels, escalation paths, and maintenance windows are included?
  • Who performs and pays for backups, restores, cross-region replication, and disaster recovery?
  • What are the Qdrant subscription costs, infrastructure costs, cloud-provider charges, and platform-labor costs at the expected workload?

The most useful proof-of-concept should include production-like vector counts, payload sizes, ingest rates, query concurrency, index-building activity, storage failure scenarios, restore testing, network-policy testing, and a management-plane outage exercise. A successful similarity-search demo is not enough to validate an enterprise deployment.

Who should consider Qdrant Hybrid Cloud?

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is a strong candidate for an organization that already has a Kubernetes platform, must keep vector data in customer-controlled infrastructure, wants Qdrant’s database APIs and engine, and would rather not operate every Qdrant lifecycle task manually.

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is a weaker candidate for a small project that needs transparent self-service pricing, a team without Kubernetes expertise, an application that can use Qdrant Cloud without residency concerns, or an environment that cannot maintain the required management-plane connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organizations with a strict air-gap requirement should begin by comparing Qdrant Private Cloud rather than assuming Hybrid Cloud is disconnected. Organizations that want the lowest infrastructure burden should compare Qdrant Cloud, Pinecone, Weaviate Cloud, or Zilliz Cloud. Organizations that need vectors tightly coupled to relational transactions should benchmark PostgreSQL with pgvector against a dedicated vector database.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Qdrant Hybrid Cloud?

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is an Enterprise-oriented deployment model in which Qdrant Cloud provides the management plane while Qdrant database clusters run inside customer-controlled Kubernetes infrastructure. The customer supplies the compute, storage, and network, while Qdrant manages database lifecycle operations through its cloud control plane.

Does Qdrant Hybrid Cloud keep all information inside the customer network?

Qdrant states that database user data remains inside the customer’s network, but Qdrant’s documentation also describes management metadata and telemetry exchanged with Qdrant Cloud. Buyers should distinguish database-data isolation from a fully disconnected or air-gapped deployment.

Is Qdrant Hybrid Cloud fully managed?

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud manages the Qdrant database lifecycle, deployment components, updates, and scheduling, but the customer still owns or coordinates Kubernetes, compute capacity, storage, networking, access policies, backups, and disaster recovery unless the contract states otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does Qdrant Hybrid Cloud cost?

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is presented as an Enterprise offering that requires contacting Qdrant, and no public Hybrid Cloud list price appears on the supplied Qdrant pricing page. The total cost also includes customer Kubernetes, compute, storage, networking, backup, observability, and platform-engineering expenses.

The Bottom Line

Qdrant Hybrid Cloud is most valuable when an enterprise wants managed Qdrant operations without moving vector data into Qdrant-managed infrastructure. The control-plane/data-plane split addresses residency, sovereignty, network-isolation, latency, and edge requirements, but the customer still operates the Kubernetes substrate and must account for management metadata and telemetry leaving the environment. The product is less suitable for small prototypes, teams without Kubernetes expertise, or genuinely air-gapped deployments unless Qdrant’s Private Cloud model meets the requirement.

Qdrant’s April 2024 “first managed vector database” claim should be reported as Qdrant’s historical market claim, not as an independently proven industry fact. Enterprise buyers should request a technical evaluation and insist on a written responsibility matrix, data-flow diagram, support model, upgrade and rollback plan, backup and disaster-recovery design, and complete infrastructure-plus-license cost estimate.
