It shows directory contents in a linked tree and colored treemap so you can find large files and folders, inspect them, and choose whether to keep, move, or clean them up. Its latest stable release listed by the project is version 2.0, released January 18, 2026, and migrated to Qt 6.
What QDirStat does
QDirStat helps answer a practical question: where has the space on a drive gone? The project describes it as a Qt-only successor to KDirStat that does not require KDE libraries or infrastructure. Stefan Hundhammer, the original KDirStat author, is credited as QDirStat’s author. The software is free and licensed under GPL v2. QDirStat project README
QDirStat’s main view combines a directory tree, a treemap and a details panel. The views are linked: select a treemap tile and QDirStat locates the corresponding item in the tree and displays details. That connection makes the treemap useful for spotting a large item and the tree useful for understanding where it lives.
How to read the treemap
Each rectangle represents a file or directory. A larger rectangle means greater disk usage; nested and grouped rectangles show how items contribute to directory totals. Colors identify file categories, such as documents, images, music, videos, executables and libraries. Categories and colors can be configured. QDirStat project README
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Area: compare rectangles to spot items that occupy an unusually large share of the scanned directory.
- Color: use the category to distinguish kinds of content; color is not a measure of size.
- Selection: selecting a tile links it to the corresponding tree entry and details.
A practical way to investigate disk usage
- Scan the directory or filesystem you want to understand.
- Look for unusually large rectangles in the treemap, or use the tree to explore directory totals.
- Select a promising item and inspect its path and details in the linked views.
- Decide whether to keep it where it is, move it elsewhere, or use an appropriate cleanup action.
- Before running a cleanup action, verify the selected paths and understand what that configured action will do.
The project documents the linked views and cleanup capabilities, but does not establish independent safety testing or guarantee that a particular deletion can be recovered. Treat cleanup as a deliberate operation, not an automatic consequence of finding a large file. QDirStat project README
Other ways to analyze a drive
Beyond the tree and treemap, the project lists features for looking at disk use from different angles. These are project-documented capabilities, not independently tested results.

- Free, used and reserved space for mounted filesystems.
Platforms and installation routes
The project lists Linux, BSD, Unix-like systems and macOS as target platforms. On Linux, start with the distribution package links on the project page where a package is available. If you build from source, the README documents using qmake6 and make; this requires a suitable development environment. QDirStat project README
For macOS, the README points to third-party platform binaries and Homebrew. Their current availability and maintenance can change, so check the project’s current installation information and the distributor’s status before relying on a particular route. The README says QDirStat has no native Windows version and no current plan for one; it points Windows users to a Docker-container approach or WinDirStat instead. A container workaround is not the same as a native Windows build. QDirStat project README

QDirStat version 2.0 and what to verify
The project README, updated September 26, 2026, identifies QDirStat 2.0 as the latest stable release and says it migrated the application to Qt 6. The project’s stable-release announcement is dated January 18, 2026. Check the project release and package pages at installation time because release status and distribution packages may change. QDirStat is a fit if you want a graphical treemap tied to a directory tree, plus project-documented cleanup actions and additional file-use views. The best option depends on your operating system, whether you prefer a graphical or terminal interface, how you will install the tool, and whether you need cleanup actions. For Windows users, WinDirStat is the alternative named by the QDirStat README. The cited project materials provide no current comparative benchmark, so they do not establish that one tool scans faster or is better overall. QDirStat project README
