On a Qantas A380 from Sydney to Dallas, Business Class already gives you a fully flat bed, direct aisle access and use of the shared onboard lounge. First adds a larger, more private seat, a longer advertised bed and, for eligible passengers, access to Qantas First lounges. Whether that is worth paying extra depends on the actual fare or points difference—and on how much those additions matter to you.
First is only an option if your flight is operated by an A380 and First is offered on that itinerary. Check the aircraft for your travel date before comparing cabins.
First, Business and the Sydney–Dallas aircraft
Qantas announced daily A380 flying on Sydney–Dallas from 1 January 2026, but the aircraft is not guaranteed to be an A380 on every date. The Australian Department of Infrastructure’s 2026 timetable summary lists both A380-800 and B787-9 equipment across Sydney–Dallas date ranges. Check the aircraft assigned to your specific flight; a non-A380 flight changes the cabin comparison and may not offer the same First product. What you get in each A380 cabin
Qantas’s general A380 specifications describe both cabins as having lie-flat beds. Business is on the upper deck in a 1-2-1 layout, with direct aisle access at every seat. First is on the lower deck in a 1-1-1 layout. The cabins offer different settings: First has fewer seats and an individual seat, while Business has an upper-deck location and aisle access from every seat.

Seat counts can also vary by aircraft configuration. Qantas’s general A380 page lists 14 First and 70 Business seats, while its route-specific A380 document shows a configuration snippet with 14 First and 64 Business seats, among other cabins. Confirm the seat map and booking details for your assigned aircraft rather than assuming either count applies to every A380. Qantas general A380 specifications · Qantas route-specific A380 document.

What the First premium buys—and what it does not
First may suit you if
- The actual cash or points premium is acceptable for this trip.
- You value the larger seat, smaller cabin or longer listed bed enough to pay the difference.
- First lounge access is available to you and is an important part of the journey.
Business may be the better value if
- Your main goal is to sleep lying flat: Business already has a fully flat bed.
- You want direct aisle access without paying for First; Qantas’s published Business layout provides it at every seat.
- The First premium is substantial relative to the extra space and ground-lounge access you expect to use.
The onboard lounge is shared, so it is not an exclusive First benefit. Qantas lists the First bed as up to 213 cm and the Business bed as about 2 m; those are airline specifications, and your own comfort depends on more than the listed length.

- Size and material: This 1/400 aircraft model is 6.30×5.71×1.85 inches in size, and the package is equipped with a display aircraft stand. The fuselage of the Airbus A380 Lufthansa aircraft model is made of high-quality resin, and the belly wings and tail are made of metal die-casting. The structure is sturdy and not easy to damage, and can be stored for a long time without fear of minor collisions.
- Prebuilt landing gear: The 1/400 aircraft model has added a new design of the landing gear part. The bracket part is restored and simulated according to the real aircraft, and the pulley part needs to be installed separately. There is a recessed card slot for installing the landing gear on the belly, which can be disassembled according to personal preference. How to decide for your itinerary
- Check the aircraft and cabin. Confirm that your flight on your travel date is assigned an A380 and that First is offered for sale on your itinerary.
- Compare the actual prices. For cash bookings, compare fares and their conditions. For points bookings, compare the points required and any cash component. Do not assume a fixed route-wide premium.
- Use Business as the baseline. It already includes a lie-flat bed, direct aisle access and the shared onboard lounge on the A380.
- Decide whether the extras justify this particular difference. Weigh First’s seat, listed bed length, smaller cabin and eligible ground-lounge access against the cash or points you would spend.
- Check availability before planning an upgrade. The fare, award inventory and upgrade availability depend on your booking and travel date; there is no established universal price or points threshold for choosing First.
What to verify before booking
- The assigned aircraft on the exact flight date, and whether the itinerary offers First.
- The current First and Business fares, including fare conditions, or the points and cash required for each.
- Your eligibility for the relevant ground lounge at the airport.
- The seat map for your assigned aircraft, since published seat counts differ between Qantas’s general and route-specific materials.
