Use a Python dict when your data is naturally a set of key-value pairs, especially when fields are flexible or you look values up by key. Use a class when a concept has meaningful state and behavior that belong together. For a stable record with named fields but little custom behavior, consider a @dataclass: it is a convenient kind of class, not a competing built-in container.

At a glance: choose by the shape and job of the data

Situation Good starting point Why
Ad hoc values, dynamic keys, mapping-based input, or lookup by key dict A dictionary maps unique keys to values, and can represent fields that vary between records. Python Tutorial: Dictionaries
State plus operations that naturally act on that state Class A class defines a type whose instances can carry attributes and methods. Python Tutorial: Classes
Stable, named record fields with little custom behavior @dataclass Dataclasses offer an idiomatic class pattern for record-like data. Python Tutorial: Odds and Ends
Reusable domain concept with a clear API or rules to maintain Class, with explicit validation as needed Methods can organize operations around state, but ordinary Python attributes are not automatically hidden or protected from invalid changes. Python Tutorial: Odds and Ends

These are design heuristics, not restrictions imposed by Python. Neither dictionaries nor classes are automatically safer, faster, or more memory-efficient in every program; that depends on the specific requirements and, for performance, the workload and Python version.

How the same user record looks in each form

Suppose an application stores a user’s name, email address, and whether the account is active. A dictionary keeps the fields as keys:

user = {
    "name": "Mina Patel",
    "email": "mina@example.com",
    "active": True,
}

if user["active"]:
    print(user["email"])

This is direct and convenient when the application mainly carries or inspects key-value data. A plain class makes the fields attributes and can place a related operation on the object:

class User:
    def __init__(self, name, email, active=True):
        self.name = name
        self.email = email
        self.active = active

    def can_sign_in(self):
        return self.active

user = User("Mina Patel", "mina@example.com")
if user.can_sign_in():
    print(user.email)

A dataclass is often less boilerplate for a stable record whose fields are the main point:

from dataclasses import dataclass

@dataclass
class User:
    name: str
    email: str
    active: bool = True

user = User("Mina Patel", "mina@example.com")

The method in the plain class illustrates when behavior can make a class more expressive: callers can ask the object to perform an operation rather than repeat the rule elsewhere. A dataclass can also have methods when useful. If the code only needs to transport or inspect the three values, a dictionary remains a reasonable choice.

When a dictionary is the better fit

The fields are flexible or arrive as a mapping

Choose a dictionary when keys may vary between records, when optional fields are numerous, or when data comes from a mapping-oriented source and you need to preserve its key-value shape. This avoids defining a separate type merely to carry changing sets of fields. Document expected keys and defaults so consumers know what the mapping contains.

Key-based lookup is the natural operation

Dictionary access makes the key explicit. In current Python, dictionaries preserve insertion order; the language reference identifies Python 3.7 as the point when that became a language guarantee. Python Language Reference: Data Model

Choose missing-key behavior deliberately. record["email"] raises KeyError if the key is absent. record.get("email") returns None by default, or record.get("email", "unknown") returns the supplied default. Use the subscript when absence should be an error; use get() when a fallback is part of the intended behavior. Python Tutorial: Dictionaries

The data is a collection, not a domain object

A mapping can be the clearest representation for settings, labels, or values assembled for a particular operation. Do not add a class just because the data has more than one field: use a type when it gives the code a meaningful concept, stable interface, or behavior that a plain collection does not express as clearly.

When a class is worth defining

Operations belong with the state

A class lets you define methods alongside the attributes they use. This is useful when callers repeatedly perform the same domain operation on an entity, or when the object has a meaningful lifecycle or responsibility. Python classes can also support inheritance and method overriding, but those are options for organizing related behavior, not requirements for every collection of values. Python Tutorial: Classes

The concept should have a reusable API

A class gives a concept a named type and a place for its interface. That can make code easier to read when functions should accept a User, Invoice, or other domain object rather than an unspecified mapping. Choose this when the type communicates useful meaning or provides methods callers should use.

Rules need deliberate enforcement

A class does not automatically guarantee valid state. In ordinary Python, attributes are accessible to clients; code that changes an attribute directly can bypass assumptions made by methods. Put validation in construction or in methods that control changes when the rule matters, and avoid exposing mutation paths that undermine it. A class is an organizational tool, not a security boundary or an automatic data validator. Python Tutorial: Odds and Ends

Where dataclasses fit

Use @dataclass when a fixed set of named fields describes the object and you want a concise class declaration. It preserves the class-and-instance model while reducing routine record boilerplate. The Python tutorial calls dataclasses the idiomatic approach for this record-like purpose. Python Tutorial: Odds and Ends

Dataclasses are not a replacement for a dictionary when keys genuinely need to be open-ended, and they do not make mutable fields immutable or validate arbitrary values merely because annotations are present. If the record has substantial domain behavior or rules, add explicit methods and validation; if it is simply a variable-key mapping, keep the mapping.

Check mutability and shared references either way

Dictionaries are mutable, and a change made through one reference to a mutable object may be visible through another reference to that same object. This aliasing behavior applies to mutable objects generally; changing from a dictionary to a class does not by itself prevent it. When shared mutation would be surprising, consider who owns the object, whether to copy data at a boundary, or whether to expose controlled operations instead of a mutable object. A practical decision checklist

  • Are fields open-ended or naturally keyed? Start with a dict.
  • Is this a stable record with named fields and little behavior? Consider a @dataclass.
  • Does the concept own meaningful operations or a reusable API? Define a class.
  • Must values satisfy rules? Add explicit validation and control how state changes, regardless of the container chosen.
  • Does your design rely on a missing field, insertion order, or shared mutability? Make that behavior explicit to callers.

Choose the simplest representation that accurately communicates the data’s shape and responsibilities. Revisit the choice when a mapping acquires a stable schema and behavior, or when a class is only acting as a wrapper around arbitrary keys.
