Pure Storage announced and completed its acquisition of Sunnyvale-based StorReduce in August 2018. Pure said the deal would add cloud-optimized deduplication for unstructured data, strengthen its object-storage portfolio and broaden integrations with public clouds for migration, tiering, backup and recovery. Pure later launched ObjectEngine, a data-protection product built on StorReduce technology.
What StorReduce provided
StorReduce was a privately held software company whose product Pure described as cloud-first, software-defined storage for large-scale unstructured data. Its technology centered on deduplication designed for cloud environments. Pure said that approach could reduce storage and bandwidth costs, but the acquisition announcement did not provide an independently verified StorReduce-specific savings figure, deduplication ratio or performance benchmark.
Why Pure Storage bought StorReduce
Cloud-optimized deduplication
Pure’s stated objective was to add deduplication suited to object storage and public-cloud workflows. That capability could make it more practical to retain backup and other unstructured data in cloud object stores while limiting duplicate data and associated transfer requirements. The cost-reduction language came from Pure; the available sources do not establish a laboratory result or customer-wide average.
Broader hybrid- and multi-cloud integration
The deal also supported Pure’s effort to connect on-premises systems with public-cloud services. The acquisition announcement referenced data tiering, migration and protection, with an emphasis on architectures that bridge local infrastructure and cloud services. Pure CEO Charles Giancarlo said the companies would help customers build “data-centric architectures that bridge seamlessly from on-prem to cloud.”

How the technology appeared in Pure’s products
2018 cloud data services
In a November 2018 cloud-services announcement, Pure described StorReduce as cloud-native deduplication for backups sent to Amazon S3 alongside CloudSnap. The architecture was presented as “flash-to-flash-to-cloud”: fast recovery from flash, with Amazon S3 used for off-site retention.
ObjectEngine in February 2019
Pure’s February 19, 2019 ObjectEngine announcement said the platform was built on cloud-native technology from StorReduce and supported backup and recovery across cloud and on-premises environments. This establishes the acquired technology’s product integration at that time; it does not establish that StorReduce or ObjectEngine remains a separately sold or supported product today.

What Pure paid and how the transaction was accounted for
Pure’s 2021 Form 10-K describes the August 2018 transaction. Its figures should not be compressed into a single, unsourced “purchase price,” because they represent different parts of the accounting.

What the public record does—and does not—show
- It shows Pure’s strategic intent: cloud-native deduplication, object-storage capabilities and hybrid-cloud backup and recovery.
- It does not provide an independently verified storage-reduction percentage, bandwidth saving, performance test, customer-adoption total or return-on-investment figure specific to StorReduce.
- The Gartner “Cool Vendor” mention in Pure’s 2018 announcement is recognition, not a performance measurement; the release cited an April 19, 2018 report and noted that Gartner does not endorse vendors.
- The available material does not confirm the current standalone availability, support status or lifecycle of StorReduce or ObjectEngine. Readers evaluating a present-day deployment should verify product identity and support directly with Pure’s current organization, Everpure.
What the acquisition meant for enterprise buyers
For enterprise storage teams in 2018, the transaction signaled that Pure was extending beyond primary flash arrays toward cloud-connected data protection and object-storage workflows. The practical value depended on an organization’s backup architecture, cloud-retention policies, recovery-time requirements and tolerance for public-cloud transfer and storage charges. The acquisition alone does not prove a particular reduction in those costs.
