The choice is less about whether a tool can take a screenshot than about control of page state, capture scope, and who operates the browser.
How the approaches differ
Puppeteer is a browser-automation workflow: your program launches a browser, navigates to a page, captures it, and closes the browser. Its Page.screenshot() method captures a page, while ElementHandle.screenshot() can capture an element. You write the code that prepares the page and decides when it is ready.
A hosted screenshot API accepts a URL and capture settings over HTTP, then returns an image. Browserless, for example, documents a POST /screenshot endpoint, full-page capture, selector capture, and viewport and output settings. Its documentation also describes connecting to a browser for interaction before capture. These are documented capabilities, not a measured comparison of service quality.
Playwright is another browser-library option, with page and full-page screenshot methods. This is not a binary choice between Puppeteer and APIs: a library is useful when your own code must orchestrate a browser, while an API can simplify captures that fit its request options.

Choose by audit requirement
| Audit requirement | Puppeteer or another browser library | Hosted screenshot API |
|---|---|---|
| Scripted interaction | Write the browser and page interaction, waits, and capture logic in your program. | A basic endpoint takes a URL and options. Some services document browser connections for interaction before capture. |
| Capture scope | Puppeteer documents full-page capture, clipping, and element screenshots. | Browserless documents full-page and selector capture. |
| Output control | Puppeteer options include image type and quality. | Browserless documents image format and Puppeteer-style options. |
| Operating responsibility | Your calling program launches and closes the browser. | The service provides a managed HTTP endpoint; service limits and operational guarantees are not established by the cited documentation. |
| Repeatability | Set page state, viewport, waits, and capture options in code. Dynamic sites can still vary. | Set the request options consistently; some pages need scrolling or waits for lazy content and full-page rendering. |
This capability map is not a benchmark: the available documentation does not establish comparative latency, uptime, price, or visual accuracy.
Build a repeatable audit workflow
- Define what the snapshot should show. Choose a viewport image, full page, a specific element, or a fixed clipping region. Use the same scope for every competitor in a comparison.
- Fix the viewport and output. Record viewport dimensions and choose an image format and quality. Puppeteer documents
fullPage, clip, type, and quality options;fullPagedefaults tofalse. - Specify the page state. Decide whether the audit should include or dismiss consent banners, wait for a particular element, or allow a page to settle. Record relevant state so a later capture can be interpreted fairly.
- Handle lazy content deliberately. Browserless recommends scrolling before full-page capture to trigger lazy loading. ScreenshotOne documents viewport, rendering, scrolling, animation-reduction, and wait controls; it notes that better rendering quality can reduce performance. Treat that as vendor guidance, not an independent performance finding.
- Capture using the same procedure. In a browser library, navigate, apply the same interactions and waits, then call the screenshot method. With an API, send the same URL and explicit settings for viewport, scope, and output.
- Keep audit metadata with each image. Record URL, capture date and time, viewport dimensions, scope, and any page state relevant to the result. This is workflow guidance based on the documented controls, not a guarantee that the page itself will remain unchanged.
Example: capture with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. This example captures the visible viewport as a PNG; change fullPage to true when the audit calls for a full-page image.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'competitor.png', type: 'png', fullPage: false });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace https://example.com with the page being audited. The chosen wait condition is an example, not a universal readiness test: pages with persistent network activity or content loaded only after interaction may need a different wait or explicit page preparation. Puppeteer’s screenshot options are documented in its screenshot guide and ScreenshotOptions API reference.

ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup steps accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
For an audit capture, use a stable target URL and save the response as an image:

Options that matter for full-page audits
Full-page capture is not automatically a faithful record of everything a visitor could see. Lazy-loaded images may not appear until scrolling triggers them, and dynamic content can change between runs. Browserless recommends scrolling before full-page capture; ScreenshotOne documents scrolling, waits, animation controls, viewport settings, and rendering choices. Tune these controls to the audit question and keep them consistent across pages.

For Puppeteer, use fullPage for the full page and a clip region when you need a fixed area. Use an element screenshot when the comparison concerns one component rather than the entire layout. Keep type and quality consistent when pixel-level visual comparison matters. The documented Puppeteer options include these controls, but they do not ensure that a dynamic page will render identically each time.

Costs, reliability, and practical trade-offs
The cited documentation describes capabilities, not comparable service prices, quotas, geographic coverage, uptime, anti-bot handling, or failure rates. It therefore cannot establish whether running Puppeteer yourself or using a hosted API will cost less or be more reliable. For a fair decision, estimate your own browser-operating work and expected capture volume, then verify the current plan limits and service terms directly with any provider you consider.

A library gives your code responsibility for browser launch, navigation, interaction, and cleanup. A hosted endpoint moves the browser operation behind an HTTP request, but introduces dependence on the provider’s documented options and service terms. Neither choice removes the need to standardize page state and capture settings for a competitor audit.
Troubleshooting inconsistent or incomplete captures
- Lazy-loaded images or sections are missing: scroll the page before a full-page capture or use the service’s documented scroll controls, then keep that behavior consistent.
- The screenshot ends before content is ready: replace an overly broad or unsuitable wait with a condition tied to the audit, such as waiting for a known selector or adding a deliberate delay. ScreenshotOne documents selector, delay, and rendering controls; choose settings according to the page rather than assuming one wait fits all sites.
- Only the viewport appears: check that full-page capture is enabled. Puppeteer’s
fullPagedefault isfalse. - The image dimensions differ between runs: explicitly set and record the viewport, capture scope, and output settings.
- Animated content changes the result: use an animation-reduction control where available, or define a consistent capture point. ScreenshotOne documents animation controls.
- A hosted request or browser run fails: inspect the service response or browser error and distinguish a page failure from a capture-setting issue. The cited materials do not establish universal error codes, quotas, or recovery guarantees, so check the relevant provider’s current documentation.
When Playwright is a better fit
If you want a browser library but are not committed to Puppeteer, Playwright is a separate option with page and full-page screenshot methods. Its screenshot documentation is at Playwright screenshots. Select a library based on the interaction and browser workflow your audit needs; the sources cited here do not establish a universal winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API replace Puppeteer for every audit?
No. A URL-and-options endpoint suits captures its controls can express; workflows needing custom browser-side interaction may call for Puppeteer or another browser library.
Does a full-page screenshot guarantee every lazy-loaded section is included?
No. Lazy content may require scrolling or other page preparation before capture.
