If Tamil text appears as empty boxes or missing characters in a Puppeteer screenshot, first check which fonts are available to the Ubuntu environment that launches Chrome—not just your desktop. Install or provide a Tamil-capable font there, verify the page is using it, and wait for web fonts to load before capturing.

Why Tamil glyphs go missing in a Puppeteer screenshot

Puppeteer captures what its browser renders. A local workstation, CI runner, and production container can have different fonts, even when they load the same page. If the runtime lacks a font covering the Tamil characters, Chromium may show blank boxes or replacement glyphs. The font problem is separate from whether Puppeteer installed Chrome or whether Chrome can launch.

Noto Tamil is a reasonable font family to investigate. The Noto Fonts project records Noto Sans Tamil UI builds in Noto Tamil v2.004 (2023), and identifies the font software as licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. See the Noto Tamil project.

Check font availability in the actual Ubuntu runtime

Reproduce the capture using the same Ubuntu host or container image, Chromium binary, and user context as the failing job. Installing a font on a developer workstation will not fix a container that does not contain it.

For Ubuntu, inspect the packages available for the release you deploy. Ubuntu’s Jammy package catalogue describes fonts-noto-core as “No Tofu” font families with large Unicode coverage; its listed package version is specific to Jammy and should not be assumed to apply to other releases. Check the Ubuntu Jammy package page and your release’s own package metadata.

On a controlled Ubuntu image, the package installation step is typically:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y fonts-noto-core

Run package installation while building the image or configuring the host that actually runs Puppeteer. The package’s broad Unicode coverage does not by itself prove that every desired character is covered or that the page selects the installed face; inspect the rendered result.

Make sure the page uses a Tamil-capable font

For a system-installed font

Set a Tamil-capable family explicitly in a test page or the site’s CSS, then inspect the computed font-family for the affected element. A declared family is not proof that the browser found a matching face, so check the screenshot for representative Tamil text in the target runtime.

For a web font

If the site supplies its own font, confirm Chromium can fetch it and that the @font-face URL is correct. Network failure, a content security policy, or a bad asset path can prevent the intended font from loading even when the CSS names it. Wait for the font set before capturing:

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'tamil-page.png', fullPage: true });

Replace the example URL with the page you need to capture. If the font is still not applied, inspect the element’s computed styles and the browser’s network and console output. document.fonts.ready is a useful synchronization step; it cannot make a blocked font load or add missing font coverage.

Separate font failures from Puppeteer installation and launch failures

If the screenshot is missing glyphs but Chrome launched and rendered the page, focus on font coverage, CSS selection, and web-font loading. If Puppeteer cannot start Chrome at all, troubleshoot browser installation and Linux runtime dependencies independently.

Browser download skipped

Puppeteer normally downloads Chrome for Testing during installation, but package-manager settings that block install scripts can prevent that step. Install the browser explicitly with the documented command:

Missing Linux libraries

Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking unresolved shared libraries with ldd chrome | grep not and documents Linux dependencies and Docker considerations. Follow its guidance for the distribution and browser build in use: Puppeteer troubleshooting.

Ubuntu AppArmor or sandbox startup issue

Puppeteer documents a possible AppArmor-related sandbox issue on Ubuntu 23.10 and newer with Puppeteer-downloaded Chrome for Testing. Treat this as a browser-launch problem, not evidence of a Tamil font issue. Puppeteer strongly discourages disabling Chrome’s sandbox as a general workaround; use its troubleshooting guidance to diagnose the actual launch failure.

Verify the fix in the target environment

  1. Run the capture in the same Ubuntu image, browser, and user context as the failing job.
  2. Check that a Tamil-capable font is installed or that the intended web font loads successfully.
  3. Wait for web fonts with document.fonts.ready before calling page.screenshot().
  4. Capture a small page containing the Tamil characters that were failing.
  5. Inspect the image and browser console or network output. Consider the issue fixed only after the target runtime’s screenshot shows the expected glyphs.

If you do not need to manage a Puppeteer runtime, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the target page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
