To take a screenshot with Puppeteer on a Raspberry Pi, use the Chromium browser installed for your Raspberry Pi OS image and pass Puppeteer Chromium’s actual executable path. First confirm your Pi’s architecture, OS, Node.js and browser versions: there is no single verified executable path or install command that applies to every Raspberry Pi model and OS image. The software setup is not India-specific; the consulted technical documentation does not establish different steps for India.
Choose how Puppeteer will manage Chromium
Puppeteer and its browser are separate parts of the setup. The right route depends on whether you want Puppeteer to install a compatible browser or want to use the Chromium package provided by Raspberry Pi OS.
| Route | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
puppeteer-managed browser |
Puppeteer normally downloads a compatible browser during installation. | Convenient when a suitable browser build exists for the Pi’s OS and architecture. Verify compatibility rather than assuming every Raspberry Pi image is supported. If installation scripts are blocked, Puppeteer documents a manual browser-install command. Puppeteer installation guide |
| Raspberry Pi OS Chromium | Use the OS-installed Chromium and configure Puppeteer with its executable path. | Uses the distribution’s browser package, but you must check the path and whether its Chromium version works with your Puppeteer release. Raspberry Pi identifies Chromium as the default browser in new Raspberry Pi OS installations. Raspberry Pi OS documentation |
puppeteer-core with a managed browser |
Installs Puppeteer without downloading Chrome; you provide and configure the browser. | Offers direct browser management, while leaving installation, dependencies, path selection and version compatibility to you. Puppeteer installation guide |
For a Pi already running Raspberry Pi OS, the OS-provided Chromium route is a reasonable starting point. Arm’s guidance recommends installing Chromium through the Arm Linux distribution’s package manager, but that does not establish one universal Raspberry Pi OS command or path. Arm Chromium guide
Check the Pi and software before installing
- Identify the hardware and OS. Record the Raspberry Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS release, and whether the installed OS is 32-bit or 64-bit. Match software to the installed architecture; an x64 browser download is not suitable merely because the Pi uses Linux.
- Check Node.js against your Puppeteer release. Puppeteer’s current system-requirements page lists Node.js 22.12 or later. Requirements can vary by release, so check the documentation for the version you intend to install. Its listed Chrome for Testing Linux platforms are Debian/Ubuntu x64 and arm64; that does not certify every Raspberry Pi OS release or older 32-bit image. Puppeteer system requirements
- Find Chromium’s real executable path. Check the installed image rather than copying a path from another model or OS release. Puppeteer supports an explicit
executablePath, but its documentation does not specify one Raspberry Pi OS path that applies everywhere. Puppeteer launch options - Compare browser versions. A distribution’s Chromium package can update on a different schedule from Puppeteer’s expected Chrome for Testing. Check Puppeteer’s supported-browser mapping for your installed Puppeteer release. Puppeteer supported browsers
Install Puppeteer and locate Chromium
Use the package manager appropriate to the Raspberry Pi OS image to install Chromium; the available package name and executable path may differ by release. Then create a project and install Puppeteer. The following commands are project setup examples, not a claim that one Chromium installation command or path works across all Pi images:
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
mkdir pi-screenshot
cd pi-screenshot
npm init -y
npm install puppeteer
Find the executable on the target Pi and confirm the path exists. For example, inspect the command resolution with command -v chromium and, if needed, command -v chromium-browser. These checks may return no result if the executable uses another name or is not on PATH; inspect the installed package and image rather than substituting a guessed path.
Set the confirmed result as CHROMIUM_PATH in the environment when running the script. Do not assume a path such as /usr/bin/chromium is universal.
Capture a page with Raspberry Pi OS Chromium
Save this as screenshot.js. It launches the browser at the path you verified, opens the requested page, waits for the page’s load event, and writes a full-page PNG. Replace the example URL with a page you are permitted to capture.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
async function main() {
const executablePath = process.env.CHROMIUM_PATH;
if (!executablePath) {
throw new Error('Set CHROMIUM_PATH to the verified Chromium executable path');
}
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath,
headless: true,
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'load',
timeout: 60000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
main().catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Run it with the path you actually found:
CHROMIUM_PATH="/actual/path/to/chromium" node screenshot.js
The placeholder path in this command is illustrative: replace it with the executable path present on your Pi. The output file is screenshot.png in the project directory. Puppeteer’s launch API documents browser launch configuration, while its screenshot API documents page capture options. Launch options · Screenshot options

Use Puppeteer’s managed browser instead
If the target OS and architecture support a suitable Puppeteer-managed browser build, omit executablePath and let Puppeteer use its downloaded browser:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
This approach does not make an unsupported OS or architecture compatible. If your package manager blocked install scripts and the expected browser was not downloaded, Puppeteer documents installing its managed browser manually with:

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Executable not found or launch fails immediately | The configured path does not exist on this image, or the browser is not installed. | Recheck the executable path on the Pi and set CHROMIUM_PATH to that exact path. Do not rely on a path copied from another release. |
| Browser starts on one Pi but not another | Different OS releases, CPU architectures, browser packages or system libraries. | Record the OS release and bitness on both systems; confirm the browser package matches the architecture and inspect missing shared libraries. |
| Missing shared library error | A Linux runtime dependency required by Chromium is absent. | Use ldd on the browser executable to identify unresolved libraries. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting page lists common Linux dependencies as diagnostic guidance, not a verified one-command Raspberry Pi OS fix; package names and availability can vary. Puppeteer troubleshooting |
| Browser and Puppeteer appear incompatible | The OS Chromium version may not match Puppeteer’s expected browser version. | Check the installed Chromium version and compare it with the supported-browser mapping for the Puppeteer release. Consider a supported Puppeteer-managed browser if the target platform allows it. Supported-browser mapping |
| No browser after npm installation | Install scripts may have been disabled, preventing Puppeteer’s browser download. | If using the managed-browser route, run npx puppeteer browsers install. If using OS Chromium, keep using its separately installed executable path instead. Puppeteer installation guide |
| Navigation times out | The site may be slow, unreachable from the Pi, or waiting on resources beyond the chosen timeout. | Check the URL and network access from the Pi, then adjust the navigation timeout or choose a different waitUntil condition appropriate to the page. A timeout does not by itself identify a Chromium installation failure. |
Performance and reliability considerations
- Full-page screenshots can consume more memory and time than a viewport capture, especially on a resource-constrained board or a long page.
- Use a finite navigation timeout and close the browser in a
finallyblock so a failed page does not leave the browser process running. - For repeated captures, consider reusing a browser process and creating a new page per capture rather than starting a new browser for every URL; monitor memory and close pages and the browser when work is complete.
- Do not treat “load” as proof that every delayed image or application widget has finished rendering. For pages with dynamic content, wait for a known selector or a suitable condition specific to the page, and use a timeout to prevent indefinite waits.
- On a maintained Pi, OS Chromium updates and Puppeteer updates can happen on different schedules. Recheck compatibility after changing either one.
These are operational considerations, not performance measurements: no Raspberry Pi model-specific benchmark or end-to-end screenshot test is established here.
India-specific considerations
The technical sources consulted do not document India-specific changes to Puppeteer, Chromium or these setup steps. They also do not establish local Raspberry Pi hardware prices, stock or seller availability. If you already have a compatible Raspberry Pi, this software guide does not require buying another board.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Puppeteer on a 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS image?
The current Puppeteer system-requirements documentation lists Linux arm64 and x64 for Chrome for Testing, but does not establish support for every older 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS image. Check the requirements for the exact Puppeteer release and browser build before relying on that combination.
