Record a Puppeteer page and save the video
The current Puppeteer API documents Page.record() for page video recording through Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.startScreenRecording API. This complete example saves the recording to recording.mp4 and ensures recording and browser cleanup are attempted even if an interaction fails. The try/finally cleanup is defensive JavaScript; Puppeteer’s documented example demonstrates the core start-and-stop sequence.

}Save this as an ES module, for example record-page.js, and run it in a project with Puppeteer installed. Replace the example URL and interaction with the page and actions you need. The file path is relative to the process’s current working directory unless you provide an absolute path.
Why the order matters
- Launch Chrome and navigate to the page before beginning the recording, so the recording focuses on the interactions you intend to capture.
- Call
page.record({ path: 'recording.mp4' })and keep the returned recording object. - Perform the browser actions to record.
- Call and await
recording.stop()to finish the recording and save the output. - Close the browser after stopping the recording.
The saved output is an MP4 video stream, not a replay script. Puppeteer’s Page.record() API reference provides the documented method and path-based example.

Use the recording as a stream instead of a path
The returned ScreenRecording extends ReadableStream<Uint8Array> and documents pipe(destination) and stop(). That makes stream handling possible when an application needs to consume the recording rather than use the path-based example. The API reference does not establish a particular upload, buffering, or custom file-writing implementation, so choose and validate the stream destination for your application.
Choose the right recording feature
- Save a page video: use
page.record(); Puppeteer documents an MP4 video stream and a file-path example. - Capture individual frames: Chrome DevTools Protocol’s
Page.startScreencastandPage.stopScreencastare frame-oriented methods. They are distinct from the protocol’s screen-recording methods; tutorials about receiving and acknowledging image frames describe a different workflow. - Record a flow for replay: Chrome DevTools Recorder captures user flows and can export formats such as JSON and Puppeteer scripts. Those artifacts describe actions for replay, rather than a page-video file.
The distinction between CDP frame screencasting and screen recording is documented in the Chrome DevTools Protocol Page domain. Chrome DevTools Recorder’s flow-recording and export options are described in Chrome’s Recorder documentation.

Do not confuse Page.record() with the older screencast API
Puppeteer’s repository main-branch reference marks Page.screencast() obsolete and directs users to Page.record(). The older method’s documentation describes WebM using VP9 at 30 FPS by default, an ffmpeg requirement, and Chrome 153+ compatibility. These are details of that older API, not defaults or requirements established for Page.record(). Because the deprecation statement comes from repository main-branch documentation, check the documentation matching your installed Puppeteer version before applying it to a pinned project.

Version-specific details to verify
The referenced current API material does not enumerate every RecordOptions field, platform limitations, an exact minimum Chrome version for Page.record(), or whether and how audio is supported. Do not infer these from the older Page.screencast() API or from the presence of an audio parameter in protocol documentation. For a project pinned to a particular Puppeteer release, consult that release’s API reference and the matching protocol version.
Troubleshooting recording and saved files
- No video file appears: ensure execution reaches
await recording.stop()beforebrowser.close(). Check the process’s current working directory if you used a relative path. - The recording ends early after an error: place
recording.stop()in afinallyblock around the actions, as in the example, so a failed action does not bypass the stop call. - A tutorial uses
page.screencast()or asks for frame acknowledgements: that is the older/obsolete API or a frame-oriented CDP workflow. For a saved page video, usepage.record()in a Puppeteer version that supports it. - The method or an option is unavailable in your project: confirm the installed Puppeteer version and consult its matching API reference. The current reference does not establish the exact minimum version or Chrome compatibility boundary.
- You need sound or a specific format: the referenced
Page.record()API information does not establish audio behavior or a configurable output format. Verify support against your installed package and protocol version instead of assuming the older screencast defaults apply.
