What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Set the viewport with page.setViewport({ width, height }), then capture the entire page with page.screenshot({ fullPage: true, path }). Puppeteer resolves a relative screenshot path from the Node.js process’s current working directory—not automatically from the script file’s folder. Set the viewport before navigating, and make sure the destination directory already exists and is writable.
Set the viewport, capture the full page, and save the file
This minimal example sets a deliberate viewport, navigates to a page, and saves a full-page PNG to a project-relative location:
const page = await browser.newPage();
// Set the page dimensions before navigation.
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({
fullPage: true,
path: 'screenshots/full-page.png',
});
Use this inside an existing Puppeteer script where browser is a connected browser instance. The official Puppeteer guide documents the screenshot workflow and options at Puppeteer Screenshots.
Understand viewport size versus full-page capture
width and height set the page viewport dimensions in CSS pixels. fullPage: true asks Puppeteer to capture the full page rather than only the visible viewport; it does not set the viewport dimensions. The screenshot may therefore be taller than the viewport.

Puppeteer recommends setting the viewport before navigation. Changing viewport-related properties can cause a page reload in certain cases, so set the intended dimensions early. The documented default viewport is 800 by 600 unless configured otherwise; choose explicit dimensions when repeatable rendering matters. See Page.setViewport() and ConnectOptions.
Choose where the screenshot is saved
The path option supplies the output file path. In the example, screenshots/full-page.png is relative to the Node.js process’s current working directory. That directory depends on how the project launches the process; it is not necessarily the directory containing the JavaScript file.

- Relative path: convenient for project output, but confirm the process working directory and that the target folder exists.
- Absolute path: use when the output must go to a specific location. Construct the path appropriately for your project and verify that its directory is writable.
- No
path: Puppeteer returns screenshot data instead of saving the image to disk.
The Puppeteer API reference does not promise to create missing directories and does not document Windows-specific path literal or filesystem-permission behavior. Check your Node.js project’s path construction and filesystem setup rather than assuming Puppeteer handles those details. With a path supplied, Puppeteer infers the screenshot format from the filename extension. See ScreenshotOptions.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The file is not where expected: A relative path is based on the process current working directory. Check that directory when launching the script, or use a verified absolute destination.
- Saving fails for a new folder: Ensure the parent directory already exists and is writable. The documented screenshot option does not say Puppeteer creates missing folders.
- The image shows only the visible area: Set
fullPage: true; the option defaults tofalse. - The page has the wrong dimensions: Set
page.setViewport({ width, height })before navigation and use the dimensions that match the intended rendering. - The file format is unexpected: When saving with
path, check the filename extension because Puppeteer infers the format from it. - The captured layout changes after resizing: Set viewport dimensions before navigating; Puppeteer notes that some viewport changes can reload the page.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is available on every plan. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does fullPage: true change the viewport size?
No. The viewport is set separately with page.setViewport(); fullPage controls the capture extent.
What is Puppeteer’s documented default viewport?
The documented default in ConnectOptions is 800 by 600. Set explicit dimensions when you need a particular rendering size.
