Yes—Allen Pan’s Sufficiently Advanced channel demonstrated arm-mounted devices that produce real flames when a punch-like motion is detected. They are a creator-built prototype, not an established consumer product, and the available coverage does not document independent safety testing or certification.
What are the punch-activated flamethrowers?
They are wearable flame-effect devices made by creator Allen Pan and shown in a Sufficiently Advanced video published on July 29, 2017. The “real firebending” description refers to the visible effect: a wearer makes a punch-like movement and flames appear to shoot from arm-mounted equipment. It is a demonstration of a custom project, not evidence of a commercially available product.
How does the punch-triggered effect work?
Coverage by Hackster and GIGAZINE describes motion detection rather than a special martial-arts sensor. An accelerometer measures movement; an Arduino Pro Mini processes the signal and, when it recognizes a rapid acceleration followed by an abrupt stop, triggers the flame effect. The descriptions say the flame action is cut off when the motion stops abruptly.
At a high level, the reported system combines sensing and control with fuel release and ignition. The sources identify these elements:

| Part | Reported role |
|---|---|
| Accelerometer | Detects the movement pattern associated with a punch. |
| Arduino Pro Mini | Processes the motion signal and controls the trigger response. |
| Butane chamber and solenoid release valve | Form the reported fuel-storage and release subsystem. |
| Modified arc lighter | Provides the reported ignition component. |
| LiPo battery | Supplies electrical power to the wearable electronics. |
| Metal-and-wood arm frame | Supports the equipment on the wearer’s arm. |
These are descriptions of the prototype’s architecture, not instructions or validated design specifications. The reports do not establish operating limits, reliability, or repeatable performance.
Is it safe, tested, or legal?
Do not treat the video demonstration as proof that the device is safe to operate. The setup combines flammable fuel, ignition, heat, and equipment worn on the body. Hackster contributor Cabe Atwell described it as “another of Pan’s extremely dangerous designs but with significant risk comes great rewards.” The cited coverage does not report independent controlled safety testing, injury data, certification, or compliance with a safety standard.

Legality cannot be determined from these reports. Rules may depend on jurisdiction, how a device is classified, and where or how it is used; the sources do not resolve those questions. Anyone considering a flame effect should check applicable local laws, fire rules, and venue requirements rather than infer permission from an online video.

The available sources establish a creator-built demonstration, not a complete consumer-ready retail version. They do not identify a verified storefront or a safe, certified product for purchase. “Arduino Pro Mini” and “LIS3DH accelerometer breakout” are component references in the technical coverage, not a complete flamethrower kit or an endorsement of assembling one.
