There is no established universal winner between PSSR and AMD FSR. Both can reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution game render, but they are different technologies with different platforms and support requirements. PSSR is Sony’s upscaling feature for supported PS5 Pro games; FSR is AMD’s family of game-integrated technologies for PC and other supported platforms. To judge which looks better, compare the same game and mode at equivalent rendering and output targets, then assess image stability and performance.
What PSSR and AMD FSR do
PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler
Sony describes PSSR as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” It is available in supported PS5 Pro games, with availability and results varying by title. In February 2026, Sony said PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 titles. That is Sony’s reported adoption count, not an image-quality measurement, and it does not mean all those games use the upgraded version. Sony’s February 2026 announcement explains the update.

FSR is a family, not one fixed feature
AMD uses FSR as an umbrella for multiple technologies. Its current terminology groups them under FSR “Redstone”: FSR Upscaling, formerly called FSR 4, reconstructs visuals from lower-resolution frames, while frame generation, ray regeneration, and radiance caching are separate components. Because features, hardware support, and game integration differ, a useful comparison should name the specific FSR version or component rather than treating “FSR” as a single setting. See AMD’s FSR overview.
How their platforms and versions differ
Sony says the updated PSSR’s algorithm and neural network draw on Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD. That shared development history does not make PSSR and AMD’s PC implementation interchangeable. PSSR is used through supported PS5 Pro game implementations or supported system-level enhancement; AMD’s features depend on game integration, the particular feature, GPU, and sometimes driver version.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Sony announced an upgraded PSSR in February 2026, describing its algorithm and neural network as a different approach from the original. Resident Evil Requiem was its first cited example. Sony later announced broader rollout and an optional PS5 Pro setting named “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” for existing supported games. Sony cautions that results vary by title and says the feature can be turned off if unexpected effects appear. The setting is therefore an option for supported titles, not a guarantee that every PS5 Pro game can use the upgrade. Sony’s rollout announcement describes the setting.
AMD’s current pages say ML-based FSR upscaling is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. AMD’s supported-games information distinguishes broader Redstone support from upscaling alone: Redstone titles require Adrenalin 25.12.1 or newer on RX 9000, while Redstone upscaling alone is listed for RX 7000 with Adrenalin 26.6.2 or newer. These are AMD’s stated requirements and can change; check the FSR feature page and AMD’s supported-games page for the game and driver you intend to use.
Why a game title alone is not an apples-to-apples comparison
A multiplatform game may use a different upscaler or revision on each platform. For example, IO Interactive says 007 First Light uses upgraded PSSR on PS5 Pro and FSR 3.1.5 on other platforms. Comparing screenshots or performance for the game without checking platform, build, and implementation can therefore attribute differences to the upscaler when other details also differ. IO Interactive’s technical overview identifies the implementations.

Modes also may not share the same internal resolution or rendering settings. Ubisoft says Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro has modes with different internal resolutions and dynamic resolution scaling. “Quality” on one platform is not necessarily equivalent to “Quality” on another. Ubisoft also discusses moving vegetation, particles and transparency, and ray-traced lighting as challenging reconstruction cases; these are useful examples of details to inspect, not a universal PSSR benchmark. Ubisoft’s PS5 Pro technical coverage provides the example.

How to compare image quality fairly
- Match the game and implementation. Check the game version, platform, and precise upscaler version or feature. A game name by itself does not establish that two platforms use the same technology.
- Match the rendering goal. Record the mode, internal rendering resolution where available, output resolution, and frame-rate target. Compare equivalent goals rather than relying on mode names.
- Inspect detail in motion. Look at vegetation, thin geometry, particles, transparency, and ray-traced effects. Fine detail that appears convincing in a still image can flicker or break up when the camera or objects move.
- Watch for temporal artifacts. Check for shimmer, flicker, ghosting, disocclusion errors where newly revealed areas are reconstructed, and detail loss during motion. Consider both still frames and gameplay movement.
- Separate image quality from performance. Note frame rate and game settings alongside image quality. Different hardware and rendering settings can affect the result, so an observed difference is not automatically caused by the upscaler alone.
- Verify compatibility. On PS5 Pro, check that the game supports PSSR or the relevant system enhancement. On PC, verify the exact FSR feature, game support, GPU generation, and driver requirement.
Which should you choose?
For a PS5 Pro owner, PSSR is the relevant option when a game supports it; the console feature is not a PC utility that can be installed separately. For a PC player, the practical question is whether the game supports the FSR feature in question and whether the GPU and driver meet its requirements. If you are choosing between versions of a game, compare the actual implementations and settings for that title rather than assuming one label produces a better image everywhere.
The cited official sources do not provide a controlled PSSR-versus-FSR benchmark using matched game builds, settings, internal resolutions, output targets, and hardware. Sony and AMD describe their own technologies and improvements, but those vendor descriptions do not establish an independent overall image-quality winner.
