Short answer: GTA VI is officially coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with November 19, 2026 listed as the launch date by Xbox. There is no authoritative GTA VI benchmark, resolution target, frame-rate specification or install-size figure yet, so nobody can honestly promise that PS5 or Xbox Series X will run it faster. PS5 and Xbox Series X are the high-end choices; Xbox Series S is the lower-cost, lower-storage option.
Choose PS5 for DualSense features and the PlayStation ecosystem, Xbox Series X for Xbox familiarity and a 1 TB high-end console, and Series S when minimizing hardware cost matters more than storage headroom. If you already own a compatible console, staying with it is normally the least expensive choice because the game is confirmed for both console families.

At a glance: which console fits which GTA VI player?
| Priority | Best fit | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation ecosystem and controller features | PS5 | PlayStation’s official blog highlights DualSense wireless-controller reactions and says “Grand Theft Auto VI plays best on PS5.” | The wording is platform marketing, not a published benchmark or guaranteed frame-rate advantage. |
| Xbox ecosystem with high-end hardware | Xbox Series X | The standard Series X has a 1 TB internal SSD and belongs to the higher-performance Series family. | No official GTA VI evidence proves a frame-rate or resolution lead over PS5. |
| Lowest hardware entry cost | Xbox Series S | It is the less expensive, lower-headroom member of the Series family and is available with 512 GB or 1 TB storage. | Expect more storage management, and GTA VI performance details for Series S have not been published. |
| Already own a compatible console | Keep your current PS5 or Xbox Series console | GTA VI is confirmed for both platform families, so replacing a working console is unlikely to add a confirmed game advantage. | Check free space, controller preference and your existing digital library before buying another system. |
Release date, platforms and editions
Rockstar Games’ official GTA VI site lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms. Xbox’s official product page lists November 19, 2026 as the release date. No PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC or Nintendo platform is identified in the official material covered here, so do not buy an older-generation console expecting to play this release.

The physical edition contains a download code rather than a game disc that independently installs the full title. Before buying a boxed copy, confirm that the code’s region matches your console account and that your account can redeem it. A mismatched region can leave you with a code you cannot use on the intended account.
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
The launch product is described by Rockstar as a single-player experience. That description matters when deciding what you need on day one: the official announcement does not establish a GTA Online mode, a required online connection for the campaign or any platform subscription requirement specifically for GTA VI.
Performance: what is confirmed and what remains unknown
At present, the evidence supports a hardware-class comparison, not a measured GTA VI winner. The official sources reviewed do not publish resolution modes, frame-rate targets, ray-tracing settings, loading-time tests or comparative PS5, Series X and Series S benchmarks. Any article or video promising a specific GTA VI frame rate before Rockstar publishes one is making a forecast, not reporting a specification.
PS5
PS5 is one of the two high-end console choices for this game. PlayStation’s official blog uses the phrase “Grand Theft Auto VI plays best on PS5” and calls attention to reactions delivered through the DualSense wireless controller. That may influence your buying decision if you value adaptive triggers, haptic feedback or an established PlayStation library.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
However, the phrase does not state a resolution, frame rate or graphics setting. It does not demonstrate that PS5 renders GTA VI at a higher frame rate than Series X, and it is not a substitute for a Rockstar performance table. Treat it as positioning from the platform holder, not as a laboratory result.
Xbox Series X
Series X is Xbox’s high-end console in the confirmed product family. Its hardware class makes it the appropriate Xbox comparison with PS5, rather than Series S. The official GTA VI information does not identify a Series X-only visual mode, a frame-rate target or a feature that PS5 lacks.
If you already use Xbox, Series X avoids moving your controller habits, account library and accessories to another platform. It also gives you 1 TB of listed internal storage in the standard model, which is more comfortable than a 512 GB Series S for a large game library.

Xbox Series S
Series S is the budget and lower-headroom option. It runs the same console-family release, but its position in the lineup means you should not assume the same resolution, visual settings or performance target as Series X. Rockstar has not published Series S specifications for GTA VI, so claims such as “locked 60 frames per second” or a particular resolution are unsupported.
Series S is also a digital-only purchase path. That suits players who buy downloads and do not need physical media, but it removes the option of installing from a disc or reselling a disc copy. Its storage capacity is the more immediate practical compromise, especially on the 512 GB model.
Why GTA V evidence cannot predict GTA VI
Rockstar’s 2022 announcement for the previous-generation-enhanced version of GTA V described a Performance RT mode targeting 60 FPS. That is historical GTA V information, not a GTA VI specification. A newer game can use different rendering features, streaming systems and quality targets, so do not carry the older 60 FPS target into a purchase decision for GTA VI.

Storage: PS5, Series X and Series S capacities
Rockstar has not published GTA VI’s install size in the official material covered here. You therefore cannot calculate the exact number of other games that will fit, and you should not rely on a rumored download figure when choosing a console.
| Console option | Listed internal capacity | What that means for GTA VI planning |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 1 TB built-in SSD | Sony notes that system software reserves part of the drive, so usable space is lower than the advertised capacity. It is the middle ground for a digital library. |
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB | Comparable advertised capacity to PS5 and the standard high-end Xbox choice. Actual free space depends on system allocation and your installed games. |
| Xbox Series X 2 TB special edition | 2 TB | The largest cited internal capacity, giving the most room before deleting or moving games. |
| Xbox Series S | 512 GB | The tightest option. A large GTA VI install would make frequent uninstalling and reinstalling more likely, although the game’s size is not yet stated. |
| Xbox Series S 1 TB | 1 TB | More practical than the 512 GB version for a mostly digital library while retaining the Series S hardware tier. |
How to use the storage figures
- If you keep only a few large games installed: 512 GB may be workable, provided you accept occasional management.
- If you rotate through a larger library: a 1 TB PS5, Series X or 1 TB Series S reduces the number of deletions.
- If you want maximum internal room: the 2 TB Series X special edition is the largest capacity identified in the official Xbox information.
- If you are buying an expansion drive: do not treat one as mandatory for GTA VI. Rockstar has not announced the install size or an expansion requirement. Wait for the final storage specification and compatibility guidance.
Remember that the advertised number is not the free space shown after setup. PS5 explicitly reserves part of its SSD for system software; other consoles also use storage for system data. Check the free-space figure in the console settings after setup rather than comparing box labels alone.

Online play and subscription requirements
What you need for the launch product
Rockstar describes the launch product as single-player. The official announcement does not publish a GTA VI-specific requirement for a paid online membership, nor does it say that a permanent internet connection is required for the campaign. Keep your console connected for account setup, updates and downloads, but do not assume a multiplayer subscription is needed for the story until Rockstar documents that requirement.

PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Support says most PS4 and PS5 games that include online multiplayer require a paid PlayStation Plus subscription, with exceptions for some titles. That is a general platform rule, not confirmation that GTA VI will include online multiplayer or that a particular PlayStation Plus tier will be required. If Rockstar later announces a GTA Online mode, check the game’s support page and the current PlayStation terms before subscribing.
Xbox online services
The supplied official GTA VI material does not state which Xbox online service, if any, will be required for a future multiplayer mode. Do not infer the answer from the console’s name or from another game. Confirm the requirement from Rockstar and Xbox when an online mode is announced.
Budgeting for a possible online mode
Separate three costs when planning your purchase: the console, the GTA VI game edition and any future platform online subscription. The available data does not establish a GTA VI price or a subscription price, and it does not establish that online multiplayer will launch with the single-player product. A subscription should therefore be a conditional future cost, not part of a guaranteed day-one requirement.
Choosing between PS5 and Xbox Series X
Choose PS5 when controller features and PlayStation continuity matter
- You already own PlayStation games, accessories or a PSN library.
- You specifically value DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger reactions highlighted by PlayStation.
- The official “plays best on PS5” positioning is meaningful to you, while understanding that it is not a measured performance guarantee.
- You prefer a 1 TB-class console and are comfortable with the usable-capacity reduction caused by system software.
Choose Series X when Xbox continuity and storage balance matter
- Your friends, purchases and controller experience are already centered on Xbox.
- You want the high-end Xbox model rather than the lower-headroom Series S.
- You want 1 TB in the standard model, or the option of a 2 TB special edition for the most internal storage cited here.
- You do not want to switch ecosystems based on an unverified frame-rate claim.
Choose Series S when entry cost is the deciding factor
- You want the lowest hardware commitment among the confirmed console choices.
- You buy games digitally and do not need physical discs or resale.
- You are willing to manage storage, particularly if you select the 512 GB model.
- You accept that GTA VI’s Series S resolution and frame-rate targets have not been announced.
If you already own a console
For an existing PS5 or Xbox Series X|S owner, the default decision is to keep the console you have. Both families are officially supported, so replacing a working system does not currently buy a documented GTA VI performance advantage. Before spending money, check these practical factors:
- Open the console’s storage settings and record the free space available for the eventual download.
- Confirm that your display supports the features you actually use; no GTA VI output modes have been published yet.
- Compare your existing digital purchases and physical collection with the platform you would switch to.
- Choose the controller you use comfortably for long sessions.
- Set aside room in your budget for the game itself and treat any online subscription as unconfirmed until multiplayer details are released.
Buying checklist for launch
- Verify the platform label: select PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. Do not assume an older-generation edition exists.
- Check the edition and seller region: Rockstar says physical copies contain a download code. Confirm that the code can be redeemed by your account in your country.
- Check storage before preloading: leave more free space than the final install size once Rockstar publishes it, because updates may need temporary room.
- Decide physical versus digital: Series S is digital-only; PS5 and Series X buyers should confirm whether the package they select includes a disc or a code.
- Review online terms later: the launch product is described as single-player, and platform subscription requirements for a future GTA Online mode are not yet confirmed.
- Install system updates: update the console and controller before launch so the game can use the final firmware and receive its day-one patch.
Verdict
There is no evidence-based performance winner between PS5 and Xbox Series X for GTA VI yet. Buy PS5 for DualSense and PlayStation continuity, Series X for Xbox continuity and a high-end 1 TB console, or Series S for the lowest hardware entry point when digital-only ownership and tighter storage are acceptable. The storage facts are clearer than the performance facts: PS5 and standard Series X are 1 TB-class systems, Series S comes in 512 GB and 1 TB forms, and the 2 TB Series X special edition has the most cited internal capacity. GTA VI’s install size, graphics modes and multiplayer subscription rules remain unpublished, so base your purchase on ecosystem, storage and controller priorities rather than rumors.
