For Linux gaming, choose the Steam Deck. Valve ships it with Linux-based SteamOS, a desktop mode and Proton, so your decision is mainly whether each game you care about works well under Proton. A retail PS5 is a PlayStation console, not a supported consumer Linux gaming PC; it has its own games ecosystem and does not expose your Steam library. The PS5 has the stronger published console hardware specification and a large supported PS4/PS5 catalog, while the Deck offers portable PC access and more operating-system control.
The comparison is not a simple GPU-teraflops contest. Screen size, power limits, game compatibility, storage method and whether you want a TV console or a handheld PC matter more than headline figures.

Which is better for Linux gaming: PS5 or Steam Deck?
The Steam Deck is the clear choice when Linux itself is a requirement. SteamOS is Linux-based, includes Proton for running many Windows-targeted Steam games, and provides a desktop interface for Linux applications. Valve documents the Deck as a PC that can be used outside the default gaming interface.

How do the PS5 and Steam Deck hardware specifications differ?
Use the figures below to identify the exact models, not as a substitute for same-game benchmarks. Sony’s number is a console specification, while Valve’s Deck figure is an APU specification designed for a battery-powered handheld.
PS5 CFI-21XX
The CFI-21XX instruction manual lists an 8-core/16-thread Zen 2 CPU, a 10 TFLOPS AMD Radeon RDNA-based GPU specification and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. Its disc-console configuration is listed with a 1 TB custom SSD, while the Digital Edition is listed with 825 GB. Those capacities and specifications are for the cited CFI-21XX manual, not a universal description of every historical PS5 revision or the PS5 Pro.
The PS5 is designed around a television or monitor, fixed power delivery and a console operating environment. Its published GPU figure cannot be converted directly into a frame-rate advantage over the Deck because the systems use different power budgets, resolutions, settings and software stacks.

Steam Deck OLED
Valve’s Steam Deck OLED specifications list a 6 nm AMD APU with a 4-core/8-thread Zen 2 CPU, eight RDNA 2 GPU compute units and a 1.6 TFLOPS FP32 specification. It has 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory and comes with a 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe SSD.
The built-in display is a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED panel running at up to 90 Hz. Valve specifies a 50 Wh battery and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay; the actual duration varies with the game, display settings, frame-rate target and other load. The OLED model supports UHS-I microSD storage and USB-C display output.
Steam Deck LCD
Valve treats the LCD Deck as a separate configuration in its technical documentation. It uses the same broad 4-core/8-thread Zen 2 and 16 GB LPDDR5 platform, but has a 7-inch 1280 × 800 60 Hz LCD, a 40 Wh battery and an estimated 2–8 hours of gameplay. Some LCD storage configurations are marked “available while supplies last”; that label does not establish current stock.

What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
- PS5’s 10 TFLOPS and Deck’s 1.6 TFLOPS FP32 are published hardware specifications, not a shared benchmark run at identical game settings.
- The PS5’s higher console specification does not make PlayStation games native Linux games or provide access to a Steam library.
- The Deck’s lower-power design enables a handheld screen and battery operation but requires checking game-specific compatibility.
- A USB-C dock or external display changes how the Deck connects to a screen; it does not turn the handheld into a higher-performance GPU system.
How well does SteamOS handle Windows and Linux games?
SteamOS 3 is an Arch-based Linux distribution with Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. Proton translates many Windows game calls for Linux, but compatibility is a property of each game, its launcher and its middleware—not a guarantee that every PC title will run.
What Valve’s ratings mean
Valve labels reviewed titles Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown on the Deck store and library. A Verified result checks input, display, seamlessness and system-support behavior. Playable can require manual changes or tolerate issues. Unknown means the title has not been reviewed, while Unsupported indicates that the current configuration fails Valve’s criteria.
Valve includes middleware such as anti-cheat in its review considerations. Its developer documentation notes that unsupported middleware or missing Proton functionality can lead to an Unsupported rating. That is why a broad “works on Proton” claim is less useful than the current rating and publisher requirements for the exact game you intend to play.
How to check a must-play game before buying
- Open the game’s current Steam store page and look for its Steam Deck compatibility label.
- Read the compatibility details for controller input, text legibility, launcher behavior and any required manual work.
- Check the publisher’s current system and online-service requirements, especially for competitive games and anti-cheat.
- If the title is Unknown or Playable, search for the game’s current Linux/Proton notes and be prepared for updates to change behavior.
- For a non-Steam game, confirm that its launcher and authentication flow work with Proton; Valve says non-Steam software can be run through Proton, but does not promise compatibility with every storefront or launcher.
What games do you get on PS5?
The PS5 runs supported PS5 games and, according to Sony, the overwhelming majority of its 4,000-plus PS4 catalog, with exceptions and possible functional differences. Sony maintains the details on its PS5 backward-compatibility page.
Physical media matters: a PS4 game disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive. A PS4 disc cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. A PlayStation purchase or disc license also remains a PlayStation entitlement; it does not become a Steam license and cannot be inserted into a Deck.
The PS5 library is therefore predictable within Sony’s supported ecosystem, but it is separate from Linux gaming. A game being available on PS5 says nothing about whether a Linux PC build exists or whether Proton can run a PC release.

Can a Steam Deck play PS5 games?
Not natively. A Deck cannot execute a PS5 game installation or read a PlayStation disc. It can, however, act as a screen and controller for a PS5 through streaming software.
Official Remote Play position
Sony’s Remote Play documentation requires a PS5 or PS4 console and lists supported clients such as Windows, Mac and mobile platforms. Linux and Steam Deck are not listed as official clients on Sony’s supported-client page at remoteplay.dl.playstation.net/remoteplay/lang/en/.
Third-party streaming
The independent chiaki-ng project documents a Steam Deck setup for streaming from a console. Treat this as third-party Remote Play software: it is not Sony’s Linux application, does not run the game locally, and cannot guarantee that every title, account configuration or network will work. Network quality, console availability and Sony’s Remote Play restrictions still apply.
How expandable is PS5 storage?
PS5 storage expansion is straightforward when you follow Sony’s drive and fit requirements, but it expands storage rather than replacing the console’s CPU or GPU.
Internal M.2 expansion
Sony supports a user-installed PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive with a Key M connector and capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Sony recommends sequential read performance of 5,500 MB/s or faster and requires effective heat dissipation; M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. Verify the current size, thickness and heatsink limits in Sony’s installation instructions before buying. The official guide is PS5 M.2 SSD installation.
Compatible PS5 and PS4 games can be stored on the added M.2 drive, and Sony states that “PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage.” The recommendation is not a universal promise that every drive delivers identical in-game performance.

External USB storage
An external USB drive can hold PS5 games, but PS5 titles must be copied to the console’s internal storage or a suitable M.2 drive to run. Supported PS4 games can run from compatible external USB storage. This makes external USB useful for archiving and moving games, not for bypassing the PS5’s performance and compatibility rules.

Sony’s procedure calls for a #1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver and careful attention to the drive’s dimensions and heatsink. Follow the current console-specific instructions rather than assuming that a drive marketed for another device fits.

The Deck offers an easy removable-storage path and a more involved internal SSD replacement. Neither path upgrades the APU, CPU or GPU.
Use a UHS-I microSD card for the simplest expansion
Both OLED and LCD models support UHS-I microSD cards. This is the least invasive way to add game capacity: insert the card, format it in SteamOS when prompted, and choose it as an install location. Card performance and game load behavior vary by model, so use a reputable card that meets the Deck’s UHS-I requirement.
Replace the OLED internal SSD
Valve identifies iFixit as a parts-and-guides collaborator. The iFixit Steam Deck OLED SSD replacement guide, last updated in 2026, documents the OLED’s single-sided M.2 2230 SSD format and names compatible replacement examples. The guide uses a T6 Torx driver and opening picks.

- Remove the microSD card; leaving it installed can damage the card or slot when the shell is opened.
- Power down and follow the guide’s battery-preparation instructions.
- Open the case with the specified Torx driver and picks, disconnect the original SSD and install a compatible single-sided M.2 2230 replacement.
- Reassemble the Deck and use Valve’s recovery process to reinstall SteamOS and restore your data.
The hardware swap alone is not enough: the operating system must be installed or recovered afterward. Use an LCD-specific repair guide for an LCD Deck instead of assuming that every internal step, shield or part is identical to the OLED model.

- Comparing teraflops as if they were frame-rate tests. The cited PS5 and Deck figures come from different designs and are not a same-game benchmark.
