For downloading, updating, and playing PS5 games without moving them, choose a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD. An external USB SSD serves a different purpose: it can archive PS5 games for later copying back, and it can store and play compatible PS4 games directly. Sony’s current support guidance distinguishes these roles; a USB drive is not a direct-play location for PS5 games.

Can I download PS5 games directly to an external SSD?

No. A USB drive set up as PS5 extended storage can hold PS5 game data, but PS5 games stored there must be copied to the console’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD before you can play them. Sony’s current USB extended-storage guidance says PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB storage.

A compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD is different: once installed, Sony says PS5 games can be downloaded to it, updated there, and launched from it. The practical distinction is whether you want an active library—games ready to start and update—or an archive that keeps installed files available without occupying console or M.2 space.

Can PS5 games update on an external hard drive or SSD?

USB storage is not a direct update-and-play location for PS5 games. A PS5 title may be stored on USB extended storage, but you need to copy it back to the console’s built-in storage or an installed M.2 SSD before playing it. That is the location where the game is active and ready to launch.

For compatible PS4 games, the workflow is different. Sony allows PS4 games to be installed and played directly from USB extended storage, and its USB guidance says PS4 games and future patches can be installed directly to a connected USB drive, subject to compatibility limitations.

What is the difference between an M.2 SSD and USB extended storage?

Both add storage, but they do not provide the same PS5-game workflow. Use an M.2 drive as an expansion of the PS5’s high-speed game storage; use a USB drive to archive PS5 titles or to play compatible PS4 titles directly.

Use case Internal M.2 NVMe SSD External USB extended storage
Download PS5 games directly Yes, according to Sony’s M.2 support guidance. No; PS5 games stored on USB must be copied back before play.
Update PS5 games in place Yes. Sony says PS5 games can be updated on M.2 storage. USB is an archive location for PS5 games, not a direct-play location; copy a stored game back to console or M.2 storage before playing it.
Launch PS5 games directly Yes, if the SSD is compatible and installed. No.
Play compatible PS4 games directly Yes. Yes. Sony allows compatible PS4 games to be installed and played from USB extended storage.
Minimum and maximum capacity 250 GB to 8 TB, per Sony’s current M.2 requirements. 250 GB to 8 TB, per Sony’s current USB extended-storage requirements.
Connection and installation Installed inside the console; compatibility, dimensions, and cooling matter. Connected over supported SuperSpeed USB; format it as extended storage using the console’s prompts.
Best fit An active PS5 library you want to download, update, and play without a copy-back step. PS5 game archiving, direct play of compatible PS4 games, or moving an inactive library between compatible consoles.

Why choose an M.2 SSD for downloading and updating PS5 games?

An M.2 SSD expands the storage locations from which PS5 games can be downloaded, updated, and launched. That makes it the direct answer if your goal is to keep additional PS5 games installed and ready to play rather than store them elsewhere until needed.

Sony’s 2026 support guidance specifies a PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe SSD with an M.2 Key M interface. The allowed capacity is 250 GB to 8 TB; supported form factors are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported.

Check the full drive dimensions, not just the form factor

The drive, including its cooling structure, must fit within Sony’s stated maximum dimensions: up to 25 mm wide, lengths of 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm, and up to 11.25 mm thick. A product name that says “M.2” or “PS5 compatible” is not enough to establish that the complete drive-and-heatsink assembly fits.

Plan for cooling and speed requirements

Sony calls for an effective heat-dissipation mechanism, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, and recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster. The speed is a recommendation from Sony, not a promise that every drive with that rating will work or make every game perform identically to the console’s built-in SSD.

Sony also cautions that it cannot guarantee every third-party SSD that meets the listed specifications, and that not all games necessarily perform exactly as they do on the console’s internal SSD. Check the current Sony requirements and the exact dimensions and cooling details for the specific drive before buying.

Internal console storage and M.2 storage are both direct-play locations

“Internal” can mean two different things in PS5 discussions. The console’s original storage and the user-installed M.2 expansion are both locations from which PS5 games can run. The M.2 drive is installed inside the console, but it is an expansion slot rather than a replacement for the console’s built-in storage. The important distinction is not built-in versus added; it is direct-play console or M.2 storage versus USB extended storage.

When is an external USB SSD the better choice?

Choose USB extended storage if you want space for PS5 games you are not currently playing, or if you want to run compatible PS4 games from the drive. It can preserve PS5 game files so you do not have to redownload them or reinstall them from disc, but you must copy a PS5 title back to console or M.2 storage to play it.

Use USB for an archive, not an active PS5 library

Archiving is useful if you rotate through a large collection and want to keep inactive PS5 installations on hand. The trade-off is an extra copy step whenever you return to a stored PS5 game. Sony describes USB storage as a way to save time when reinstalling PS5 games compared with redownloading them or installing them from disc; that is a workflow benefit, not a published controlled speed comparison.

Use USB for compatible PS4 games

Unlike PS5 titles, compatible PS4 games can be installed and played directly from USB extended storage. Sony’s USB guidance also says PS4 games and future patches can be installed directly to a connected USB drive, subject to compatibility limitations. This can leave console and M.2 capacity available for PS5 games.

USB requirements and connection limits

Sony’s current requirements call for a commercially available drive with SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB through 8 TB. Sony advises against connecting the drive through a USB hub, and only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at a time. Follow the console’s safe-removal procedure before disconnecting the drive.

Why USB can be the lower-cost capacity option

The USB choice is often made for lower-cost bulk storage rather than for maximum PS5 performance. Sony’s requirements do not set a retail price, and prices vary by capacity, interface, brand, and sales period. Budgeting should include the fact that an external PS5 library still needs a copy-back step, while an M.2 purchase may require a compatible heatsink and careful installation. The cheaper drive is not automatically the better value if you want every PS5 title ready to launch.

How should I choose between M.2 and USB storage?

Decide based on what you want to do with the games, rather than assuming that either kind of SSD provides the same experience. For PS5 games you want ready to launch and update in place, the M.2 route avoids the USB archive’s copy-back workflow.

  • Choose M.2 if you want to download, update, and launch more PS5 games without moving them between drives, and you are comfortable checking fit and installing an internal expansion SSD.
  • Choose USB extended storage if your priority is holding a larger archive of PS5 games, playing compatible PS4 games directly, or keeping an inactive game library on a portable drive.
  • Consider both if you want an active PS5 library on M.2 and a separate archive or PS4 library on USB. They serve different jobs, so one does not make the other redundant.

If you are shopping specifically to expand the number of PS5 games that remain ready to play, look for a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with an effective heatsink. If you are shopping for an external drive, treat it as USB extended storage for PS5 game archiving and compatible PS4 direct play, not as a place to launch PS5 games.

How do you set up each storage type?

The setup differs: an M.2 SSD must be installed in the console and meet Sony’s physical and technical requirements, while a USB drive must meet Sony’s connection and capacity rules and be configured as extended storage.

Install an internal M.2 SSD

  1. Check the PS5 model and Sony’s current M.2 support guidance for compatibility requirements before buying. Confirm PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M, supported capacity and form factor, maximum dimensions with the cooling structure, and the recommended read speed.
  2. Confirm that the SSD has an effective cooling solution and that the complete assembly fits within Sony’s stated limits. Do not rely on a retailer’s compatibility label alone.
  3. Install the SSD following Sony’s model-specific instructions. The exact physical access and installation procedure can vary by console model, so use the guidance for your own PS5 rather than assuming all models are identical.
  4. Start the console and follow its on-screen prompts to format the new M.2 storage if prompted. Formatting prepares the drive for use; check the prompts carefully before confirming any action.
  5. Use the console’s storage and game-management controls to choose the M.2 location for supported game downloads or move installed games there. Games on M.2 can then be downloaded, updated, and launched from that storage.

Set up USB extended storage

  1. Choose a commercially available USB drive that meets Sony’s SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-later and 250 GB-to-8 TB requirements.
  2. Connect it directly to a supported PS5 USB port rather than through a USB hub. Sony permits only one USB extended-storage drive at a time.
  3. Use the console’s on-screen instructions to format the drive as USB extended storage. Review the format prompt before confirming it.
  4. Install or move compatible PS4 games to USB if you want to play them directly from the drive. Sony’s support guidance says compatible PS4 games and future patches can be installed there, subject to compatibility limitations.
  5. Move PS5 games to USB only when you intend to archive them. Before playing one, copy it back to console storage or the installed M.2 SSD.
  6. When finished, use the PS5’s safe-removal procedure before disconnecting the drive.

Can I move an external drive between PS5 consoles?

A USB drive can be useful for moving an inactive PS5 game library between compatible consoles, provided it meets Sony’s requirements and is disconnected using the safe-removal procedure. The drive’s portability does not change the play rule: a PS5 game still has to be copied from USB to the destination console’s built-in storage or installed M.2 SSD before launch.

Do not treat an unplugged USB cable as a safe-eject action. Stop using the drive through the PS5’s storage controls first, then disconnect it. This reduces the risk of interrupting storage operations.

Do storage drives change download or update times?

The official Sony guidance does not provide a controlled benchmark comparing download or update times across console storage, M.2 SSD, and USB extended storage. Download times also depend on factors outside the storage device, so there is no supported percentage or minutes-saved figure to apply to every setup.

The clearest documented difference is workflow: M.2 storage can hold PS5 games for direct downloading, updating, and launching; USB can hold PS5 game files for later copying back. Sony says archiving to USB can save time compared with redownloading a PS5 game or installing it from disc, but does not quantify that time saving.

Where do PS5 saved data and game installations go?

Saved data is separate from game installation data. Sony’s storage information distinguishes saved data from game data and associates PS5 and PS4 saved data with cloud storage when using PlayStation Plus; an external drive’s role as game storage does not mean that it is also the location for those saves.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Before moving or deleting game installations, check the console’s saved-data controls separately from its game-storage controls. That distinction matters when managing space: moving a game installation and managing a save are separate tasks.

What should you verify before buying?

  • For M.2: verify the PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface, Key M, supported capacity and form factor, full dimensions including heatsink, effective cooling, and Sony’s recommended sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster.
  • For USB: verify SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later and capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB; plan to connect it directly, without a hub.
  • For either drive: confirm the intended workflow. A drive’s “SSD” label does not change Sony’s rule that PS5 games on USB must be copied back before play.
  • For a specific third-party product: compare its current listing and specifications with Sony’s current support requirements. Sony does not guarantee every third-party drive that meets the listed specifications.
  • For a PS5 model: check the model-specific installation instructions and current system software guidance before opening the console or formatting a drive.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

Buying an M.2 drive solely because it has the right storage capacity is risky. Capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB is only one requirement; the interface must be PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe with Key M, the dimensions must fit with the heatsink installed, and cooling must be effective. An M.2 SATA product is not a substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying an external SSD because it is faster than a mechanical hard drive also does not change the PS5 rule. USB extended storage remains an archive location for PS5 games, regardless of whether the USB drive uses flash storage. Conversely, rejecting USB storage for PS5 entirely overlooks its value for direct-play PS4 games and for retaining PS5 installations without downloading them again.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current guidance, dated 2026, sets the capacities, fit limits, interface requirements, USB connection rules, and recommended M.2 read speed described here. Those figures are compatibility guidance, not a brand-specific guarantee or a storage-speed benchmark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will moving a PS5 game to another drive move its save file too?

No. Sony treats saved data separately from game installation data, so moving an installation should not be treated as moving its save. Manage saved data separately in the console’s saved-data controls; PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the cloud option Sony identifies for PS5 and PS4 saves.

Can I use an M.2 drive and a USB extended-storage drive at the same time?

Yes. They serve separate storage roles: the M.2 SSD is installed internally, while USB extended storage connects externally. Sony’s one-drive-at-a-time limit applies to USB extended storage, not to the installed M.2 expansion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a 5,500 MB/s M.2 SSD guarantee every PS5 game will run the same as on console storage?

No. Sony describes 5,500 MB/s or faster as the recommended sequential read speed, cautions that it cannot guarantee every third-party SSD, and says some games may not perform exactly as they do on the built-in SSD.

Can I download a PS5 game straight to a USB SSD?

USB extended storage can store PS5 game files, but it is not a direct-play location. Keep the game on the console’s built-in storage or a compatible installed M.2 SSD when you want to download, update, and launch it without copying.

Can I play PS4 games from an external SSD on PS5?

Yes, compatible PS4 games can be installed and played directly from USB extended storage. Sony also allows compatible PS4 games and future patches to be installed there, subject to compatibility limitations.

Is an external SSD faster for PS5 downloads than an M.2 SSD?

There is no controlled Sony benchmark establishing a universal download or update-time advantage among console storage, M.2, and USB. The practical difference is location: M.2 supports direct PS5 play, while USB requires a copy-back step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when I want to play an archived PS5 game?

Copy it from USB extended storage to the PS5’s built-in storage or installed M.2 SSD. Once copied to a direct-play location, it can be launched and updated there.

Do I need a heatsink on an M.2 SSD?

Sony requires an effective heat-dissipation mechanism, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. Verify the complete drive-and-heatsink dimensions stay within the 25 mm width, supported length, and 11.25 mm thickness limits.

The Bottom Line

Buy a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD if you want PS5 games to download, update, and launch in place. Buy USB extended storage if you want lower-cost bulk capacity, direct-play storage for compatible PS4 games, or an archive of PS5 games that you are willing to copy back before playing.
