Start with the free space shown on your own PS5, then decide how many games you want installed and ready to play at once. There is no universal game count for 1 TB: game sizes and libraries vary. If you need more room, a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD lets you store and play PS5 games; USB extended storage can store PS5 games but cannot run them directly.
In the US, Sony advertises PS5 configurations with 825 GB or 1 TB of internal storage, and PS5 Pro with 2 TB. Those are advertised capacities, not the space available for games after system use. For an M.2 upgrade, the key requirements are PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, a supported capacity of 250 GB to 8 TB, adequate heat dissipation, and dimensions that fit the expansion bay.
How much PS5 storage do you need?
You need enough space for the games you want installed simultaneously, plus room for downloads and updates. Check the console’s actual free space before buying anything: a model’s advertised capacity is not the same as its available game space, and the amount shown can vary by configuration and existing content.

Use your library, not a universal game-count estimate
There is no reliable fixed answer to “How many games fit on a 1 TB SSD?” Games differ in size, and the mix of titles in one person’s library may be very different from another’s. Updates and future downloads also affect how much headroom is useful. Treat capacity as room for your particular installed library—not as a promised number of games.
A practical way to estimate your needs is to list the games you want installed at the same time and compare their displayed storage sizes with the free space on your console. You do not need to predict every download you might make over the life of the drive. Instead, decide which titles are your regular rotation, which can be archived or removed, and how much room you want left for new downloads and updates. This turns “How much storage do I need?” into a decision about your own habits rather than a generic game-count claim.
If you are close to having enough space, first consider whether you can uninstall titles you have finished or move content using the console’s supported storage options. An internal expansion makes most sense when that routine becomes inconvenient—especially if you want a bigger selection of PS5 games ready to launch without copying them back from USB storage.
A practical decision is to compare the space you have now with the games you want installed at the same time:
- Keep a small rotation: If you are comfortable uninstalling a game when you finish it, removing unused titles may be enough.
- Keep more games ready: A 1 TB expansion is one option to compare against your current free space and intended library.
- Keep a larger library installed: Consider whether 2 TB better suits the number and size of the games you want available together, with room for future downloads and updates.
- Need more than that? Sony’s supported M.2 capacity range extends up to 8 TB, subject to the other compatibility requirements below.
These are decision points, not a claim that every owner needs a 1 TB or 2 TB drive. An internal expansion is most useful when you want more games installed and playable without repeatedly managing space. If you are deciding between capacities, use your console’s storage screen and the sizes of your own games rather than a generic online game-count chart.
Is 1 TB or 2 TB enough for PS5?
Either might suit you; neither is a universal minimum. Compare the amount of free space on your current console with the total size of the games you want installed together, then decide how much headroom you want. A 1 TB drive is a reasonable capacity to compare for a smaller installed rotation; 2 TB gives more room for a larger simultaneously installed library. Actual space for games will not be identical to the advertised capacity, and the number of games each drive holds depends on the titles.
Supported drives can be as large as 8 TB, but the maximum is a compatibility limit, not a recommendation that everyone should buy the largest option. No current price comparison or tested performance ranking is available here, so check live listings before deciding whether the extra capacity is worth the price to you. Do not treat a larger capacity by itself as proof of faster game loading.

What storage does each PS5 configuration include?
Sony’s US hardware listings advertise different built-in storage capacities by configuration. These figures describe advertised capacity, not the amount available for games, and should not be generalized to every unit or region.

| Configuration listed in the US | Advertised internal storage | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 configurations | 825 GB or 1 TB | Capacity varies by configuration; check the free space displayed on your console. |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | Advertised capacity is not identical to space available for games. |
Because the built-in capacity differs, a “usable storage” number for one model should not be treated as the free space on another. Check the storage screen on the exact console you own, especially if you are comparing an original PS5, a later PS5 configuration, or PS5 Pro. The advertised figures above are from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US hardware listings verified in 2026; they are model-dependent figures, not a measurement of free game space on every console.
Can you play PS5 games from an external drive?
Not directly from USB extended storage. You can store PS5 games on a compatible USB extended-storage drive, but you must copy them back to the console’s internal storage or its M.2 SSD expansion before playing. Compatible PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage.
This makes USB storage a different solution from an internal M.2 upgrade. USB can be useful if your goal is to archive PS5 games and avoid downloading them again, or to keep compatible PS4 games available. If you want to launch PS5 games from the added storage, choose a compatible internal M.2 SSD instead. As Sony’s PlayStation Support installation guidance puts it, “PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage.” That statement refers to the internal M.2 expansion, not USB extended storage.
In other words, choose based on the inconvenience you are trying to solve. USB storage can help keep an archived PS5 game available to copy back later, but it does not eliminate that copy-back step. An M.2 SSD is the relevant option if the goal is to play PS5 titles directly from added storage. These options serve different purposes, so a USB drive should not be presented as a substitute for an M.2 expansion when direct PS5 game play is the requirement.
What kind of M.2 SSD is compatible with PS5?
Choose an M.2 NVMe SSD with a PCIe Gen4 x4 interface. Sony’s support guidance specifies a capacity range of 250 GB to 8 TB and recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. These are compatibility requirements and guidance—not a guarantee that every drive labeled “M.2” will work.
In particular, an M.2 SATA drive is not the same as a compatible PCIe NVMe drive. Check the interface and the drive’s complete dimensions before purchase, including its cooling hardware. Sony’s M.2 SSD guidance also calls for effective heat dissipation. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s support guidance, verified in 2026, gives the capacity range and speed recommendation; the latter is a recommendation, not a benchmark of a specific SSD.
Check the complete drive-and-heatsink dimensions
A heatsink may be built into the SSD or fitted separately to a suitable bare drive. Either way, the complete assembly must fit the PS5 expansion bay and stay within Sony’s dimensions. Sony’s maximum assembled height is 11.25 mm; account for the SSD and its heat-dissipation hardware together, rather than checking the bare drive alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn SSD with a preinstalled heatsink can simplify the purchase because the cooling component is already attached, but it still needs to meet the console’s overall size limits. A bare drive with a separate compatible heatsink is another option if the assembled dimensions fit. Do not assume that any heatsink will fit simply because the SSD itself is compatible. If you are considering a bare drive, check the dimensions of the exact heatsink and SSD as an assembled unit, not just the advertised dimensions of either component on its own.

Before buying, verify all of the following against the SSD manufacturer’s specifications and Sony’s compatibility guidance:
- It is an M.2 NVMe SSD, not M.2 SATA.
- It uses PCIe Gen4 x4.
- Its capacity is within the supported 250 GB–8 TB range.
- Its sequential read speed meets Sony’s recommendation of at least 5,500 MB/s.
- It has effective heat dissipation.
- The SSD and heatsink together fit the expansion bay and do not exceed the 11.25 mm maximum assembled height.
Do not select a drive based only on a product title that says “M.2” or “PS5 compatible.” Confirm the interface, capacity, speed guidance, cooling, and assembled dimensions in the specifications. The simplest fit may be an SSD sold with a heatsink, while a compatible bare SSD plus a separately purchased heatsink can also work if the completed assembly meets the limits.
Sony’s speed figure is a recommendation, not a benchmark of a particular product. No price or performance ranking follows from these compatibility specifications alone; check current product listings and dimensions before deciding.
How do you install and format an M.2 SSD?
Before opening the console, confirm that the SSD and its cooling assembly meet the requirements above. You will need a Phillips screwdriver. Because cover removal and orientation instructions vary by PS5 model, use Sony’s illustrated procedure for your exact console; the sequence below is an overview, not a substitute for those model-specific illustrations.
- Shut down and disconnect the PS5. Fully power off the console, unplug its cables, and let it cool before handling it.
- Remove the console cover using the correct instructions for your model. Follow Sony’s illustrated cover-removal guidance rather than applying an assumed one-size-fits-all orientation.
- Open the M.2 expansion-slot cover. Use the Phillips screwdriver as directed in Sony’s instructions.
- Position the spacer for the SSD’s length. The spacer must be placed at the position corresponding to the drive length. Follow the model-specific illustration to identify the correct position.
- Insert and secure the SSD. Seat the drive in the expansion connector, then fasten it as shown in Sony’s procedure. Do not improvise the orientation or fastening method.
- Replace the slot cover and console cover. Reassemble the console according to the illustrated instructions for your model.
- Reconnect and start the console. Follow the on-screen instructions to format the M.2 SSD when prompted.
- Manage game locations. After setup, use the PS5 storage controls to manage where games are stored.
There are two useful checks before you start: make sure the drive and its heatsink are within the physical limits, and make sure the drive does not contain files you need to keep. The first prevents a fit problem; the second matters because setup includes formatting the expansion drive. If you are uncertain about the cover-removal direction or which spacer position matches your SSD, pause and consult Sony’s illustrated instructions for your exact console rather than guessing from a guide for another model.
Important: Formatting erases data already on the installed M.2 SSD. If the drive contains files you want to keep, preserve them elsewhere before formatting. Do not treat the installation outline above as a replacement for Sony’s official, model-specific illustrations, especially for cover removal and drive orientation.
Should you choose an M.2 SSD or USB storage?
Choose based on what you want the added storage to do. An internal compatible M.2 SSD expands the storage from which PS5 games can be played. USB extended storage is useful for a different purpose: compatible PS4 games can play from it, while PS5 games on it must be copied back to internal or M.2 storage before they can be played.
| Your goal | Storage option to consider | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Play PS5 games directly from added storage | Compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD | Must meet Sony’s interface, capacity, speed, cooling, and size requirements. |
| Keep PS5 games archived for later | USB extended storage | Copy the game back to internal or M.2 storage to play it. |
| Play compatible PS4 games from added storage | USB extended storage | Only compatible PS4 games can run directly from it. |
If your main frustration is downloads or uninstalling games, USB storage can reduce the need to download archived PS5 games again, but it does not remove the copy-back step. If your priority is launching PS5 games from additional storage, an M.2 SSD is the relevant option. This distinction is worth checking before spending money: the two types of storage do not offer the same play location for PS5 games.

What should you check before buying?
Use this checklist to avoid paying for the wrong kind of drive or a cooling assembly that does not fit:
- Capacity: Base it on the free space and installed library you want, not a universal estimate of games per terabyte.
- Play location: Decide whether you need to play PS5 titles directly from the added storage or simply keep them archived.
- Interface: Confirm PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe; “M.2” by itself is not enough.
- Speed guidance: Check that sequential read speed meets Sony’s recommendation of at least 5,500 MB/s.
- Cooling and dimensions: Confirm effective heat dissipation and that the complete assembled drive stays within the bay’s size limits, including the 11.25 mm maximum height.
- Console model: Use Sony’s illustrated installation instructions for the exact PS5 model you own.
- Data on the drive: Plan for first-use formatting to erase any data already on the expansion SSD.
A drive can have the right capacity and still be unsuitable if it uses the wrong interface, lacks adequate heat dissipation, or exceeds the physical limits. Conversely, buying a larger drive than your current free-space problem requires is not automatically better; choose based on the library you actually want installed. If comparing a 1 TB and 2 TB option, judge the extra space against the games you want ready at once and the price currently listed, rather than assuming a capacity is necessary or relying on an unverified game count.
