How much PS5 storage you need depends on the games you want installed and ready to play—not a universal terabyte rule. Check Settings > Storage on your console, compare its free space with the installed sizes of the games you keep, and consider deleting or moving titles before buying hardware. If you regularly run out of room for PS5 games you want to play immediately, a compatible 2TB internal M.2 SSD is a practical shopping starting point—not a Sony requirement or an average-owner recommendation. USB storage is useful for PS4 games and archiving PS5 games, but it cannot run PS5 games directly.
How much PS5 storage do I need?
Start with the free-space figure shown on your own console, then decide how many games you want installed at once. There is no evidence-based capacity that suits every PS5 owner: game sizes and library habits vary, and Sony’s product specifications are not a measure of usable space for games.
Sony’s US product listings checked in October 2026 show these advertised built-in capacities:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Console listing | Advertised built-in storage |
|---|---|
| PS5 disc console | 1TB |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825GB |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB |
These are advertised capacities, not a promise that the entire amount is free for games. Your installed games, system software, captures, saved data and other content affect what is available. Check Settings > Storage instead of estimating free space from the product-page number. The US Digital Edition listing checked here says 825GB; do not assume every Slim Digital Edition has 1TB.

Use this simple capacity worksheet:
- On the PS5, open Settings > Storage and note the free space and what is using storage.
- List the PS5 games you want to keep installed and ready to launch. Check each game’s installed size on the console rather than relying on a generic online estimate.
- Add games you expect to install soon, including room for updates, without treating any fixed amount of spare space as a Sony rule.
- Decide whether you are comfortable deleting or moving a game when space gets tight, then downloading or copying it back later.
This approach avoids two common mistakes: treating advertised drive capacity as entirely available for games, and buying a larger drive simply because a fixed number sounds right. The amount of space you need changes with your library, what you play at the same time, and whether you accept a download or copy-back step when switching games. The product listings above are specifications, not a study of average game size or an average player’s needs.
If you play a few games at a time and do not mind reinstalling or redownloading others, you may not need an expansion drive. If several PS5 games need to remain playable without a transfer step, an internal M.2 SSD is the relevant expansion. If your library is PS4-heavy or you mainly want an archive for PS5 titles, USB extended storage may suit you better.
What are the ways to expand PS5 storage?
There are three practical approaches: free space without buying hardware, add an internal M.2 SSD for games you want to play directly, or connect a USB drive for PS4 games and PS5-game storage. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for saved data, not installed games.

Think of internal M.2 storage as an extension of the console’s playable game space: compatible PS5 and PS4 games can be installed, updated and launched from it. USB extended storage is more like an external shelf. It can keep PS5 games available to copy back later and can run PS4 games directly, but a PS5 title on USB must first be copied to the console or M.2 storage. Whether the USB drive is an SSD or HDD does not change that restriction.
That distinction helps with the choice. If you often switch among PS5 games and want them ready without moving files, internal M.2 is the fitting option. If your main concern is preserving a collection of games you play less often, USB can be a useful archive. If you only run short of space occasionally, deleting a game you can redownload may be the cheapest option, though it costs time when you want to play it again. Compare not just capacity but also immediate playability, the copy-back or download wait, fit and cooling requirements, installation effort, formatting risk and current total price.
Storage features and requirements in this guide are based on PlayStation support and US product information checked in 2026. No current prices are included because no current official US retail listing was published; compare the full current cost of a drive and cooling hardware, if needed, before buying.

Can I play PS5 games from an external hard drive?
No. A PS5 game stored on a USB extended-storage drive must be copied back to the console’s built-in storage or an internal M.2 SSD before you can play it. This is true whether the USB drive is an SSD or an HDD.
USB extended storage can install and run PS4 games directly, and it can hold PS5 games you are not currently playing. That makes it useful for an archive, but it adds a copy-back step before a stored PS5 game is ready. An internal M.2 SSD is the choice when the goal is to keep additional PS5 games playable directly. Sony’s support guidance says, “PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage.”
For USB extended storage, Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB at 5Gbps or later and capacity from 250GB to 8TB. Connect it to a supported SuperSpeed port on the console, not through a USB hub. Only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at a time. These rules apply to the use of the drive as PS5 extended storage; do not assume a drive’s connector or an “SSD” label alone establishes compatibility.
What should I check before buying an internal PS5 M.2 SSD?
Check the interface, capacity, physical dimensions and cooling assembly—not just a product label that says “PS5 compatible.” Sony’s current online M.2 support specifications, checked in 2026, allow the following:
| Requirement | Sony’s stated specification |
|---|---|
| Drive type and interface | PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe, Socket 3 (Key M) |
| Capacity | 250GB–8TB |
| Supported lengths/form factors | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 |
| Sequential read speed | 5,500MB/s or faster recommended, not stated as an absolute requirement |
| Maximum complete assembly width | 25mm |
| Maximum complete assembly thickness | 11.25mm total; no more than 8.0mm above the board and 2.45mm below it |
| Cooling | Required |
| Unsupported interface | M.2 SATA |
Measure the complete installed assembly, including its heat-dissipation structure. A drive that fits by length can still be too wide or too thick once a heatsink is attached. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s; that is a recommendation, not a guarantee of a particular loading-time improvement. Sony also cautions that it cannot guarantee every third-party drive that appears to meet the specifications will work.

Choose either an SSD with a suitably sized integrated heatsink or a compliant bare SSD paired with a cooling structure that fits the console’s limits. Do not add a second heatsink to a drive that already has one built in. Sony explicitly states: “M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.”

As a practical shopping search, “2TB PS5 compatible PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink” describes a category to compare, not a specific tested product or a guarantee that any item with those words will fit. Verify the drive’s actual interface, capacity, form factor, and manufacturer-listed dimensions with the heatsink included. If the cooling structure is sold separately, include it in the total price and check that the combined assembly stays within Sony’s limits. A bare drive with a separate heatsink can work, but it needs the same complete-dimension check.
How do I install an M.2 SSD safely?
Before opening the console, update PS5 system software and identify the console’s CFI model group so you can follow the matching illustrated Sony installation guide. You will need a suitable work surface and a #1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver.
- Power down and prepare. Turn the PS5 off, unplug it and allow it to cool. Work on a stable surface and touch a grounded metal object to discharge static before handling components.
- Use the model-specific instructions. The cover-removal steps vary by console model. Follow the illustrated instructions for your CFI model group instead of relying on a generic diagram.
- Fit the spacer and drive. Place the spacer in the position for the SSD’s length. Align the M.2 connector and seat the SSD fully without forcing it.
- Secure and close the console. Fasten the drive, then replace both the M.2 slot cover and the console cover before powering on. Do not operate the console with its cover removed.
- Format when prompted. On first installation, the console prompts you to format the SSD. Formatting erases existing data on that SSD. Do not interrupt formatting or saving. Sony documents an exception for an M.2 SSD moved between PS5 consoles; follow the on-screen instructions for that case.
Installing an M.2 SSD adds storage; it is not an instruction to replace the console’s built-in drive. Sony’s warranty language is conditional: installing a qualifying M.2 SSD according to its instructions generally should not affect manufacturer coverage, but damage resulting from failure to follow those instructions may not be covered. Check the applicable warranty terms rather than assuming an unconditional outcome.

A USB drive must meet PlayStation’s requirements: SuperSpeed USB at 5Gbps or later and a capacity of 250GB–8TB. Connect it to a supported SuperSpeed port on the console, not through a USB hub.
- Connect the drive to a supported SuperSpeed USB port.
- If prompted, format it as extended storage. Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents. A drive already used as PS4 or PS5 extended storage may not need to be formatted again.
- Do not disconnect the drive or interrupt the console while formatting.
- To disconnect while the PS5 is on, open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5.
Only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at a time. Before formatting, make sure anything you need from the drive is copied elsewhere: formatting is a destructive operation, not a way to preserve its earlier files. Use the console’s safe-removal option when disconnecting an active drive rather than pulling its cable. This is especially important when you are moving or deleting files, since you should not interrupt storage activity.
Will an expansion drive back up my saved games?
Do not treat an M.2 SSD or USB extended-storage drive as an automatic saved-game backup. PlayStation separates game installations from saved data in its storage options; cloud storage is a separate saved-data feature. Saved data, installed games and captures are distinct categories, so adding capacity for game installs does not by itself establish a backup of your progress or screenshots and video clips.

Sony’s US storage page lists 100GB of PlayStation Plus cloud storage, according to the page checked in 2026. Availability and subscription terms can change, so verify the current terms for your region and plan. Cloud storage for saves does not replace an SSD or USB drive for installed game files.
Can you free space before buying a drive?
Often, yes. If a game is a digital purchase, deleting its installed files does not forfeit the ability to download it again, though you will need to download or reinstall it when you want to play. Some games also allow you to remove unused portions, which may free space without removing everything.
Review what is using space in Settings > Storage. Remove games you no longer play, or move appropriate content to USB extended storage if you want to keep PS5 games archived. If you frequently have to reinstall games and want them ready to launch, compare the inconvenience of that routine with the cost and installation effort of an internal M.2 SSD.
This is a useful first step because it separates a temporary space crunch from a persistent need for more playable capacity. If freeing room or archiving a few titles solves the problem, you avoid the expense and setup of another drive. If the same games repeatedly need to be downloaded or copied back, the time spent waiting may make expansion worthwhile. You can base that decision on your own play habits rather than an assumed universal game-size figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I choose between a 1TB and 2TB PS5 SSD?
Choose based on the games you intend to keep installed and the free space your console reports, not on a claim that one capacity is enough for everyone. A 1TB expansion may suit a smaller set of extra installs; 2TB is a useful starting point for shopping if you regularly run out of playable PS5-game space. Neither is a Sony-mandated size, and the right choice depends on your library and budget.
Before paying for more capacity, check the drive’s full cost with its required cooling solution, if sold separately, and verify that the assembled dimensions meet Sony’s limits. If you mainly want to keep games stored rather than immediately playable, a USB archive may make more sense than paying for internal capacity. Current drive prices are not established here, so check retailers for up-to-date totals.

In short, 1TB versus 2TB is a planning decision, not a compatibility rule. Look at the games you actually keep ready to play and how often you switch among them. If the smaller option would still leave you moving or deleting titles more often than you are comfortable with, consider more capacity; if you are happy to archive games or redownload them, a smaller drive—or no purchase—may be enough. Make the same complete-assembly fit check for either capacity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a PS5 SSD need a heatsink?
Yes. Sony requires cooling for a compatible internal M.2 SSD, and the complete assembly must fit within the console’s stated dimensions. If the drive already has an integrated heatsink, do not stack another one on top.
Will installing an SSD erase my games?
Formatting the new SSD erases data already on that SSD, not the games installed on the PS5’s built-in storage. Back up or move any files you need from a previously used drive before formatting it.

Can I use the same M.2 SSD in another PS5?
Sony documents moving an M.2 SSD between PS5 consoles as an exception to the first-installation formatting step. Follow the receiving console’s on-screen instructions and Sony’s support guidance rather than reformatting pre-emptively.
Does deleting a digital PS5 game remove it from my account?
Deleting the installed game files does not forfeit the ability to download a digital purchase again. You will need to download or reinstall it when you want to play, and availability can depend on account access and the title remaining available.
Can I play PS5 games from an external hard drive?
No. A PS5 game on USB extended storage must be copied back to the console’s built-in storage or an internal M.2 SSD before play. USB storage can run PS4 games directly and hold PS5 games for later.
Is 1TB or 2TB enough for PS5?
It depends on how many games you want installed and ready to play. Check Settings > Storage and compare your free space with the games you keep; 2TB is a practical shopping starting point for someone regularly short of playable PS5-game space, not a Sony requirement.

There is no universal amount. Use the free-space figure on your console and the installed sizes of the games you want to keep ready. If you are comfortable deleting, redownloading or archiving games, you may need less expansion than someone who wants many PS5 titles immediately playable.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check Settings > Storage and base your decision on the games you want ready to play. Freeing space may be enough; an internal M.2 SSD adds directly playable PS5 and PS4 capacity, while USB storage is for direct PS4 play and PS5-game archiving. Before buying an M.2 drive, verify the interface, capacity, full dimensions with cooling and installation steps, and remember that formatting erases data already on that drive.
