PS5 Slim is good enough for GTA 6, and the original PS5 should not run it better. Both consoles are in the same PS5 platform family, and Sony has not published a GTA 6 frame-rate or graphics difference between them. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro on November 19, 2026; it is not announced for PS4.
For most buyers, the PS5 Slim 1TB Disc Edition is the safest all-round choice because it combines the current smaller chassis, the larger listed storage tier and support for physical PS5 and PS4 games. Choose the PS5 Slim Digital Edition 825GB if you will buy everything from the PlayStation Store. Consider an original PS5 only when a used or clearance unit is substantially cheaper and is in good condition.
What is confirmed about GTA 6 on PS5
PlayStation has confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026. Sony has not listed a PS4 version, so a PS4, PS4 Pro or PS4-compatible accessory cannot substitute for a PS5 for this release.

What has not been announced
- Rockstar has not published GTA VI’s installation size in the official material available for this comparison.
- Rockstar and PlayStation have not published a Slim-versus-original PS5 performance test or separate frame-rate target.
- There is no official evidence that the original, larger PS5 will render GTA VI at a higher frame rate, resolution or graphical setting than the Slim.
Those unknowns matter because any article promising a specific GTA VI frame rate or download size for either console would be guessing until Rockstar publishes the specifications.
What the PS5 Pro announcement means
PS5 Pro is listed as a launch platform, but it is a different, higher-priced console category from both the original PS5 and PS5 Slim. The PS5 Pro listing does not establish that either standard PS5 model is cut down, unsupported or given a separate version of GTA VI. If you are deciding only between Slim and standard PS5, compare those two as the same PS5 target. A Pro purchase should be based on its own published features and price, not on an assumed Slim limitation.
PS5 Slim and standard PS5: hardware baseline
The original console is commonly called the “standard” or “launch” PS5. Sony’s CFI-12XXA disc-model manual lists the following baseline:

The table compares the published figures without implying that a teraflop count predicts GTA VI performance by itself. The important buying point is that Sony positions the Slim as the same PS5 experience in a smaller form factor, not as a higher-performance generation.
What “same features” means for GTA 6
Sony’s Slim product copy says the same features that make PS5 the place to play are packed into a smaller form factor. In practical terms, the Slim remains a PS5 target for games, uses the PS5 software ecosystem and supports the same type of PS5 display features documented by Sony, including 4K, HDR and high-frame-rate capabilities where a game supports them. It does not establish that GTA VI will use every feature or that it will select the same mode on every display.
Will GTA 6 run better on the original PS5?
There is no cited official evidence that it will. Treat the original PS5 and PS5 Slim as the same GTA VI performance target unless Rockstar publishes model-specific information later.
Why the larger chassis is not a performance advantage
The launch PS5’s larger enclosure does not automatically give it a faster processor or graphics configuration. What could still differ in real use
Individual consoles can differ in age, dust accumulation, fan noise, storage condition and warranty status. A well-maintained original PS5 may feel quieter than a heavily used unit, while a new Slim has the practical advantages of a new warranty and current production. Those are condition and ownership differences, not evidence of a different GTA VI rendering mode.
Storage: 1TB Slim versus 825GB models
Storage is the clearest specification difference in the current listings. Sony lists a 1TB PS5 Slim Disc Edition and an 825GB PS5 Slim Digital Edition. Sony’s CFI-12XXA manual lists an 825GB custom SSD for the original disc PS5.
How much space GTA 6 will need
Rockstar has not published an official GTA VI installation-size figure in the cited material. Do not reserve a guessed amount of space or buy a drive advertised as “required for GTA VI” on the basis of an unverified listing.
The 1TB Slim gives more nominal capacity than either 825GB baseline, but a console’s operating software also occupies storage. The useful comparison is therefore “more headroom for GTA VI and other games,” not a promise that a particular number of games will fit.

- You mainly play one or two large games at a time and remove completed titles.
- You use a fast broadband connection and are comfortable redownloading games.
- You are buying the Digital Edition at a meaningful discount and do not expect a large installed library.
When 1TB is the better default
- You want GTA VI installed alongside several other large PS5 games.
- You prefer fewer uninstall and redownload decisions.
- The 1TB disc model is priced close to the Digital Edition in your market.
Adding an M.2 SSD later
A compatible PS5 M.2 NVMe SSD is a reasonable follow-on for a multi-game library. Compatibility, heatsink requirements and installation instructions should be checked against Sony’s current PS5 support guidance and the drive manufacturer’s specifications. Because GTA VI’s size is not published, select capacity based on your whole library rather than a supposed GTA VI minimum.
Plan for updates as well as the initial download
Even after the first installation, keep free space for patches and future content. The final requirement may differ by region, edition or update schedule, so avoid filling an 825GB or 1TB drive to its visible limit. On a Digital Edition, account access and your ability to redownload from the PlayStation Store are part of long-term ownership; a disc drive cannot turn a download-code package into an offline disc installation.
Do you need a disc drive for GTA 6?
No, not specifically for GTA VI. Rockstar says the physical version contains a download code inside the box and that no disc will be included. Rockstar also says that version will be available starting November 12 to support pre-loading, ahead of the November 19 launch.

A disc drive can still be valuable for other reasons. It lets you play physical PS5 and PS4 games, buy used copies, resell or lend eligible discs, and play Blu-ray or DVD media. Those benefits concern your wider library, not GTA VI’s own packaging.

Adding a drive to the Slim Digital Edition
Sony lists a removable Disc Drive for the PS5 Slim Digital Edition. The drive is compatible with the Slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 families identified by Sony, and it requires an internet connection for pairing during setup. Check the model number on the console and the current Sony compatibility information before buying; an old launch-PS5 drive is not a substitute for the Slim’s removable unit.
PS5 Slim versus original PS5: practical trade-offs
Size and placement
Sony reports that the Slim reduces volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% and 24% versus prior PS5 models, with the exact reduction depending on the model being compared. That makes the Slim easier to fit in a crowded media cabinet or move between rooms. The original CFI-12XXA manual’s approximately 390 × 104 × 260mm dimensions illustrate why the launch design occupies more shelf space.
Leave adequate ventilation around either console and place it on a stable surface. Do not treat the Slim’s smaller enclosure as permission to block vents; GTA VI will still be a demanding PS5 title.
Storage and media
The current 1TB Slim disc model wins on the listed internal capacity and flexibility. The Slim Digital Edition matches the original’s published 825GB capacity while omitting the drive until you add one. An original disc PS5 can be attractive only when its lower price compensates for the larger enclosure and older storage baseline.

Prices, bundles and stock change by country and retailer. Sony directs buyers to retailers rather than guaranteeing one global street price. Compare the complete package—console edition, included stand or accessories where applicable, warranty, shipping and the cost of a later drive—on the day you buy. A discounted original can make sense; a similarly priced original usually gives you fewer practical advantages than the current Slim.
Used-console checks
If you buy an original PS5 second-hand, verify that it starts normally, connects to PlayStation Network, reads a game disc if it is a disc model and includes a working DualSense controller and power cable. Listen for unusual fan or drive noise, inspect the vents for heavy dust and confirm the seller’s return period. Check the exact CFI model rather than relying on a listing title that says only “PS5.” These checks protect you from condition risk; they do not change the expected GTA VI target.

Which PS5 should you buy for GTA 6?
Best default: PS5 Slim 1TB Disc Edition
Choose this model when its price is close to the digital version. You get the compact current chassis, the larger listed 1TB tier and a built-in drive for your other PS5 and PS4 games. GTA VI itself will still be downloaded because Rockstar’s physical package contains a code rather than a disc, but the drive preserves options for the rest of your collection.
Best digital-first choice: PS5 Slim Digital Edition 825GB
Choose the Digital Edition when you buy through the PlayStation Store, do not need used or boxed games and accept the smaller listed capacity. It is a sensible GTA VI console if your broadband and storage habits suit an all-download library. You can add Sony’s compatible removable drive later if your physical-media needs change, provided you complete the required online pairing.
When an original PS5 is worth it
Buy an original PS5 when a clearly lower used, refurbished or clearance price outweighs its larger chassis and 825GB baseline. Check that the seller identifies the exact model, includes the correct power cable and controller, allows adequate testing and offers a return period. The cited Sony and Rockstar material does not show a GTA VI speed advantage for the original, so do not pay extra for one.
A buyer’s checklist before launch
- Confirm the platform. You are buying a PS5 for a game scheduled on PS5 and PS5 Pro, not a PS4.
- Choose your media policy. Decide whether you need physical PS5/PS4 games or Blu-ray/DVD playback beyond GTA VI.

- Verify model compatibility. For a Slim Digital Edition drive, confirm a CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 Slim family model and plan for internet pairing.
- Plan installation space. Keep free SSD capacity for the game and updates, but wait for Rockstar’s official install-size figure instead of relying on rumors.
- Check your display. A 4K HDR display can make use of supported PS5 output features; the console choice does not guarantee a particular GTA VI resolution or frame rate.
- Check your network. Because both digital purchases and the boxed download-code version require downloading files, schedule the download around launch traffic and make sure your PlayStation account can redeem codes in your region.
Launch timing and pre-loading
PlayStation lists November 19, 2026 as the GTA VI release date for PS5 and PS5 Pro. Rockstar’s statement about the physical package says it will be available from November 12 to support pre-loading, but the box contains a download code and no disc. That means your download time, internet connection and available SSD space remain relevant even if you buy a boxed copy.
Because launch details can change, confirm the release date, regional availability, retailer bundle and final storage requirement on Rockstar’s and PlayStation’s official pages when pre-orders open and again near launch.

- Want one recommendation: buy the PS5 Slim 1TB Disc Edition when the price is close to the digital model.

Should I buy PS5 Slim or regular PS5 for GTA 6?
Buy the Slim 1TB Disc Edition when its price is close to a digital model: it is smaller, has the larger listed SSD and includes a drive for other games and movies. Choose an original only when a good-condition used or clearance unit is substantially cheaper.
