QSSR and PSSR are related but distinct Sony upscaling tiers. QSSR is designed for the standard PS5 with a streamlined, PS5-tuned neural network; PSSR is the higher-tier system for PS5 Pro, which also received an upgraded PSSR in 2026. Sony describes QSSR as improving fine detail and image stability, but has not published a controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR test. That means there is no established universal winner—or verified frame-rate difference.

QSSR vs. PSSR at a glance

Technology Target console What Sony says it changes What is not established
QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) Standard PS5 A streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5 performance; Sony says it improves image detail and stability. No published QSSR-versus-PSSR benchmark for image quality, internal resolution, frame time, or frame rate. Sony’s QSSR announcement, October 1, 2026.
Original PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) PS5 Pro Sony’s AI-guided upscaling system for improving effective resolution. Do not treat original PSSR as the same implementation as the later upgraded version. Sony’s upgraded-PSSR announcement, February 27, 2026.
Upgraded PSSR PS5 Pro A substantially revised neural network and overall algorithm; it rolled out to selected games, with results varying by title. Its game-specific results do not establish how QSSR compares. Sony’s rollout examples, March 16, 2026.

Sony says PSSR remains its “gold standard” tier on PS5 Pro, while QSSR is intended to bring AI-guided upscaling to standard PS5. QSSR was announced on October 1, 2026, so its supported-game roster is new and may change. Sony says it plans to offer the technology broadly to PlayStation developers; that is not a promise that every PS5 game will support it.

What QSSR is designed to do on standard PS5

QSSR means Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as a performance-oriented tier built from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. The stated design changes are a streamlined neural network and an implementation hand-tuned to maximize performance on standard PS5. Sony says the system analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to reconstruct an upscaled image with more detail and stability than conventional approaches.

Those descriptions do not supply the technical numbers needed for a direct performance comparison: Sony has not disclosed QSSR’s input or output resolution, compute cost, latency, frame-time overhead, or model parameters in its announcement. The word “Quick” and the performance-tier positioning are not evidence of a specific speed or image-quality result.

What the image-quality claims mean

Sony says QSSR brings “notable improvements” to image detail and stability on PS5. The first-game developers describe clearer pixel-level detail and steadier fine features. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald cited busy streets and dense alleys in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry highlighted detail in characters and environments and temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei. These are vendor and developer descriptions, not independently measured head-to-head results.

For players, the relevant differences are not just whether a still image looks sharper. Upscaling can affect how fine textures, hair, foliage, thin geometry and edges resolve, and how steady they remain as the camera or objects move. Flicker, ghosting or afterimages can also change the perceived result. An implementation may look clearer in one scene and behave differently in another; Sony has not published quantified QSSR results across those conditions.

Does QSSR improve FPS?

There is no published QSSR frame-rate uplift to quote. Sony’s “performance tier” label describes QSSR’s design for standard PS5; it does not mean that a game using it will run at a higher frame rate. A game’s performance depends on its implementation and selected graphics mode, and upscaling can change reconstructed image quality without changing the mode’s frame-rate target.

Upgraded-PSSR reports offer examples, not a general rule for QSSR. Sony’s March 2026 rollout announcement included developer comments about improved stability and motion clarity in some titles, and BioWare described maintaining stable frame rates in specified modes for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows article describes image-quality improvements across Performance, Balanced and Quality modes, each with different internal-resolution behavior and dynamic scaling. Neither establishes a QSSR result or a universal frame-rate gain.

How upgraded PSSR changes the PS5 Pro comparison

There are now two PSSR implementations to distinguish. On February 27, 2026, Sony’s PS5 architect Mark Cerny announced upgraded PSSR, describing a different approach to both the neural network and the overall algorithm. Resident Evil Requiem was the first game to use it. Sony also said a system software update would add an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option for PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR; Sony cautioned that results vary by game.

In March rollout examples, developers reported improved image stability, motion clarity, fine-detail reconstruction and reduced flicker or afterimage in particular titles. Sony notes that players can switch off the system-level enhancement if unexpected visual effects occur. These are title-specific reports, not evidence that upgraded PSSR always looks better or that it is equivalent to QSSR.

Sony said on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That is a dated count of PSSR-supported games at that time; it is not a current roster, a count of games using upgraded PSSR, or a QSSR-support count.

Which games support QSSR?

At its October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR titles and said both were being patched that day. Sony did not publish a complete adoption list. Check the game’s current patch notes or in-game graphics information before assuming QSSR is available in a specific title or mode.

How to compare QSSR and PSSR fairly

A useful comparison needs the same game and scene, and should distinguish visual inspection from performance measurement. If comparing footage or testing a game, record:

  • Console, game version, patch and graphics mode.
  • Output resolution and capture method, keeping the display and capture conditions consistent.
  • Static fine detail separately from motion stability; examine foliage, hair, thin geometry, particles, transparency, reflections and ray-traced effects.
  • Visible artifacts such as flicker, ghosting or afterimage, rather than judging sharpness alone.
  • Frame rate and frame time as separate measurements from perceived image clarity.

Ubisoft identifies moving foliage, particles and transparency, and ray-traced lighting among the demanding reconstruction cases it considered when discussing upgraded PSSR in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Its observations apply to that game and implementation, not automatically to QSSR or other titles. Ubisoft’s article, published March 31 and updated April 6, 2026.

Does QSSR mean you need a PS5 Pro?

No. QSSR is designed to bring Sony’s AI-guided upscaling to standard PS5. PSSR is the PS5 Pro tier, and PS5 Pro is the console to consider if access to that tier is specifically important to you; it is not required for AI upscaling in general. Sony’s product page positions PS5 Pro around enhanced image clarity and performance, but the QSSR announcement provides no controlled comparison that would establish whether a Pro upgrade is worthwhile for a particular player.
