There is no verified universal winner. Sony says its new Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) option improves image detail and stability on standard PS5, but its announcement does not include a controlled comparison with native-resolution rendering. The result depends on how each game implements its graphics modes; judge them title by title rather than assuming QSSR is always sharper or native rendering always looks better.

What QSSR and native resolution mean in this comparison

QSSR is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling option for standard PS5. Sony describes it as a new performance tier developed from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, using a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize PS5 performance. Sony says PSSR remains its highest-tier upscaling technology on PS5 Pro. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement does not publish a technical comparison against native rendering.

“Native resolution” needs care in a game-by-game comparison: it means the game is rendering at the specified resolution rather than reconstructing an image from a lower internal resolution. A console’s output signal alone does not establish the game’s internal rendering resolution. Check the game’s own mode descriptions or reliable measurements instead of inferring it from a 4K output setting.

What Sony says looks better—and what that establishes

Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability on PS5. The developers of the first announced QSSR games also describe improvements: Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald says it adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine, while Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry says it resolves fine detail with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5 in Ghost of Yōtei. These are attributed vendor and developer claims, not results from a published independent head-to-head test.

The announcement supplies no internal-resolution figures, pixel-count analysis, controlled image samples, measured image-quality score, or frame-rate comparison for QSSR versus native resolution in either game. It therefore cannot establish which option is sharper, more stable, or better overall under matched conditions.

Which games support QSSR?

Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using the QSSR library. Their patches add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony says the library will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but it has not supplied a comprehensive list of future supported games. Availability is therefore title- and patch-specific; check the game’s current patch notes and graphics settings.

How to compare QSSR with native rendering fairly

  1. Identify the exact setup. Record the game, patch, PS5 model, graphics mode, and any other image-quality options in use.
  2. Confirm what each mode renders. Verify that one option is genuinely native rendering and the other uses QSSR. Do not treat the console’s output resolution as proof of internal resolution.
  3. Match the viewing conditions. Use the same scene, camera position and movement, output resolution, display, and viewing distance. Differences in scene or display setup can obscure the effect of the rendering mode.
  4. Inspect more than a still image. Compare fine detail, edge shimmer, stability during motion, and reconstruction artifacts. Note any documented resolution or frame-rate differences rather than attributing every change to image quality.
  5. Separate observation from claim. Label measured capture results as testing, and identify statements from Sony or a developer as their claims. Without controlled results, do not declare a winner.

Check the PS5 display setting without confusing it with QSSR

Output setup affects what you see. Sony’s PS5 resolution support guide says 4K output requires a compatible 4K screen and selection of 2160p output. The guide also documents “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” for compatible PSSR games on CFI-7000 model-group consoles. It does not identify that setting as a QSSR control, so do not assume the PSSR toggle applies to QSSR.
